uv light on candy cane

Exactly..... What has UV got to do with processing nutrients in snakes......Nothing...
But there is evidence of it benefiting certain species of snakes in their well being...
We've already discussed on another thread that we look for optimum conditions for our snakes, and this is just the next level that is being discovered.... Lets stop shouting 'NO' every time someone asks about UV, as it's an unknown quantity at the moment.....Like someone posted they bought a hood...Thats a serious amount of UV.... I'm talking very low levels.... And I'm not talking all snakes...At the moment.

We're in a Cornsnake forum. Cornsnakes do not require UV light. It is personal choice if someone wants to use UV (preferably low level).

I'm so glad your so sure of that... From now on I'll repeat that to anyone that asks me if cornsnakes require UV.....But in my experience, things change. The amount we understand about 'pet' snakes has come forward leaps and bounds in the last 30 years. Things that were common place then are frowned upon now. Well around here anyway...
I'm just keeping my options open on this one until a definitive answer comes up....

Yes, actually I am. Out of several hundred cornsnakes I've had over the years, I can say that with confidence. Cornsnakes will not die (ie do not require) without UV lighting.

You're right, Cornsnakes won't die without UV lighting. But the point that Mike was trying to make was that it can contribute to their wellbeing and general health. We don't require most of the things that we may have in our homes, but they certainly contribute to our wellbeing, why can't it be the same with regards to low levels of UV with Cornsnakes?

Granted, people who are on a budget can easily skip this and just go with the bare necessities, and it won't cause any harm. But those will a little extra money who are willing to create a pleasant living environment may wish to buy a low percentage UV tube.

I've already mentioned about the effect that it could have on morphs lacking melanin, so no need to go into that.

I'm speaking of requirements, not owner choice.

No one is saying "don't buy UV lighting"...What is being said is that it is not required. If you don't want to use it, don't buy it...If you do want to use it, make sure you're not overkilling with the UV bulb.

I dont think i've ever heard of a snake that needs UV light. UV is generally for lizards and it helps break down the calcium and aids in other digestion processes to prevent disease and metabolic issues.

Fair enough :) Oh and greatcornholio, we've already established that, mate.
