Waiting for my first snake...

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum (and this is my first ever chat room!). I understand that I'm suppose to introduce myself. I am in the process of researching and preparing for the arrival of my first corn snake. I'm getting him from a reptile rescue organization in Richmond, BC. He's a 3 year-old stray. That's all I know now but they are a reputable organization with strict rules. I'm hoping to get some more information from this site about any important newbie mistakes! I have a few questions but I don't think they are suppose to be in this forum so I'll try to find out where to post them.
Thanks,
tmax

Hi TMax and welcome. I'm over on Vancouver Island. Always nice to see new people close to me. Is the snake you are getting the one that was found outdoors? I saw on their website a snake someone found outdoors. Hope to keep in touch. Good luck and enjoy your new corn

Hi there,
The lady said that these two snakes don't have bios or pics yet on the website so I'm not sure. I only just found out about them today so I still need to get more information. I don't even know what colour he is! And, my husband is out madly searching for an aquarium!

for the aquarium, you will need at least a 20 gallon, sicne it is 3 years old.

good luck. you will probably have to be extra pacient with him/her since s/he was a stray

Thanks for the advice. I have just been checking out the FAQs and had a question about enlcosures. I was thinking that I'd have to use an aquarium but read that some people use sterilite containers. If I don't find an aquarium right away (I'd like to buy used as I don't really want to spend hundreds of dollars if I can avoid it) I thought I could maybe use that. I'm assuming you need to drill holes in it but what I'm wondering is about heating. Would you still use something to heat one end? What could you use? Would a heat lamp melt the plastic? These may be silly questions but I thought this was the place to ask them!

yes a heat lamp will melt the plastic.

im not sure about the temperatuer in your house, but if its 80 ish in teh room the snake is in it should do fine. maybe give it a heading pad under the tank? u can use like heating neck pads from the grociery store if they have a way to change the temperature.

also, instead of buying an "aquarium", try buying a critter cage. they are made for snakes and other small animals, they look just like aquariums, but have thinner glass because they dont have to hold water. they are mucher cheaper (like $70 for a 20 gallon) than aquariums, and come with a locking screen lid.

if you do get an aqaurium, make sure the lid is on securely and the snake cannot open the lid. more first time snake owners loose thier snakes to escape than to death. well, thats what i read anyways =P

I got my 40 Gal critter cage for $99,
I saw the viv with doors in front, it was 40 Gal and on sale for $50.
Didn't had money, then left....I came back next day, it was gone!
I was pissed!!

haha. if i saw a 40 gal on sale for $50, i'd put it on hold, go to the bank, and come back asap. and i only have 1 snake lol...

but yeah thats a great deal. doesnt suprise me it was gone the next day

We are considering making a melamine one now. any ideas about the best construction methods and designs? I was hoping to use a UTH but I might have to put in a piece of glass on the one side of the bottom in order to do that, I think. I'm really a knob with this kind of stuff. Thankfully, my husband is really handy at building all sorts of great stuff that looks really well-made.

Welcome tmax, I'm on the island as well. The Richmond Rescue is a good one, hope you enjoy your new snake!

Bit belated, but welcome to the Forum tmax!

I'm also from BC, settled on Northern Vancouver Island. ^_^ I'd love to see some pictures of your new addition when you get him/her! I think it's awesome that you're getting a rescue corn.
