What are other snakes besides corns and balls people commonly keep?

I am a big fan of some of the kings, especially the montain type. Alterna and mexicana are some of my favorite. Most, if not all have a great temperment, but most are also hard to get to eat as neonates.

The first four pics are of baby alterna (Grey-Banded Kingsnakes) that I produced. All four are form the same clutch, one thing I love about them is the diversity. The last pic is of a female that I caught in West Texas this past June.
very awesome looking !

I have a Suriname BCC, but it's generally not a good "larger snake" starter animal...she stole our hearts, so we had to have her. =)
I had a Suri for a short while, when I had only 2-3 corns. LOVED her, but I figured I'd pass on an animal that can get to 10-12 feet while I'm the only human in the house.

I now have my first king, an MBK I got at Tinley. I'm sure I'll get a mate for her by the end of next season.

If I get back into boids, I'd really want to go for a Hog Island or two; after that, Chondros.

jazz

Other than Corns...

San Luis Potosi's

Cali Kings

Nelsons

I am not a fan of the bigger snakes..

I have a Hognose and a Kingsnake, both are very good pets!

The hognose is duirnal snake, so its out during the day and sleeps in the night. It looks like a viper (to me anyways  ) and has very weak venom, but very rarely bites. Its a very interesting little snake and tops out at around 2-3ft.

The king is a very curious little snake, always comes to the front to see what Im doing. He does musk though, which is quite annoying but I can deal with it  .

Both Hog and King aint as shy as my corn, hes not very bold and would rather hide than carry on doing his thing while I watch.

If this thread is supposed to find out which snake you want to buy next, both of these snakes are great snakes. But for a wider variety and an interesting snake, look into hognoses

My Deckertt's ratsnake has the same requirements as the corns, but is definatey more challenging in his behaviour. He went through biting and musking when handled, but now is calm if I've got gloves on. He's more active than the corns and I like his subtle pattern and colours

Kathy: When you get into some ATB I'd love to get one. I've wanted a red patternless but Mike Heinrich let his red female go and I never got the chance to get a baby from her.

To the others that are suggesting the red tailed boas. You should mention that they get rather large as well and require a large tank for proper housing when they get older.

Dumeril's Ground Boas are nice..though they do get over 5ft most get to a lenght of 6-7ft but some have reached 8-9ft...nice snakes but bigger than 5ft and can be hard to get feeding regularly as neonates and are sometimes shyer then other snakes

my wish list is long...too long to list here :)

if you want a boa that wont get too big and heavy bodied, look into brazilian rainbow boas. i love Kaos. he's a sweetie. the only drawback is that he doesnt come out much. if you're looking for a display snake, BRB's are not a great choice, but they dont mind being handled. they're pretty chill. most people would say that Kaos is an exception...most BRB's are nippy when they are young. but they do calm down with handling and age.

Hognoses are on my wish list. they are so unique and just have a good temperment. they also dont get very large.

Kings are cool, but some can be pissers. Mayhem, my cali king is a pisser. he's still a young'un though. and he thinks he's a cobra. i open his tub and he immediately rears up like a cobra. and i can guarantee a musking and a few nips everytime...thats why he is "Mayhem".
but i've handled other cali kings that were calmer.

i'm partial to the colubrids...i dont really like the heavy bodied huge boas or pythons. for one thing, i dont have the room for them another is that they are heavy and strong. too strong for me.

oh no not at all, tiny really
eventually i'll build a viv for my BRB when he's big enough. he will probably have the largest enclosure. the rest will be living in a rack system.
i'd rather have many snakes than one really big snake.

Theres soooo many other "starter" snakes out there apart from royals and corns, however both seem to be one of the most popular and most documented species in captivity making husbandry research so widespread.

Personally I started with corns, then moved to boas. BCI morphs. I now have a few other different species - royals, western hognoses, sand boas and soon to be P. Baroni... I would not recommend baroni or western hoggies as a first snake for many reasons, one being both are rear fanged species.

If your worried about space then large constrictors ie burms, BCI's, BCC's, retics etc are a major no no!

If you lack experience with snakes in general or have not experienced fussy feeders, regurges and other health problems its an absolute MUST to find a healthy, well established snake. A yearling is your best bet.

Key factor in chosing a snake is to FULLY research the species, and decide whats right for yourself - taking every point of their husbandry into consideration. You can't go wrong with corns though, as safe as they may be.

Hmmm forgot some pictures of my non corn bunch. And forgot to add that my wishlist is SWAMPED with weird arboreal species ie chondros, jcps, atbs, rough green snakes etc. Plus i also have a love for snakes with elongated noses - the baroni and western hoggies. I would kill for a pair of rhino rats but the baroni are a poor womans substitute. I wouldnt advise any of the above mentioned as first timer species.

Heres a couple of my non cornies.

 Do you have amnesia? Two posters already told you about them. I think you replied to at least one of them. :grin01:

I have a rosy boa too. He's a beautiful animal, but he has very strong feeding response. In short, when he's hungry, he bites anything near him that moves. Unfortunately, he's hungry most of the time. :awcrap: Still, when I sold the snakes I used to have years ago, I kept this guy. I guess that says something. He's about 17 years old now, but he seems healthier than ever.

In addition to corns I keep a Cali king, A Florida king, four Mexican black kings, Great Plains rat snakes, Bairdi rat snakes, Kisatchie rat snakes, and African house snakes. All are easy to care for. :)

I am with Roy on this.. I responded to one of your questions with pictures of my pair.

What do you want to know specifically about them??

In addition to them I have corns, gophers, bull snakes, Mexican Black Kings, Cal king, honduran milk and a Bairdi rat. All snakes keep to a nice size that work well.
