What are the chances?

I have a female that double clutched last year. She had 14 viable eggs the first time, 8 viable eggs the second.

She generally doesn’t lay eggs unless she’s been bred. This year she’s getting a little fat. What are the chances of her a) laying eggs b) any of those being viable from last year’s breeding?

Just debating if I should pull out the incubator and set it up in case. Or is it unlikely that if she does lay that they will be fertile?

It's definitely possible, if not especially likely. If it were me, I'd break out the incubator. Always better safe then sorry. Worst case scenario, you waste a little time. It's better to waste time than a good clutch, right?

Well she refused a meal and she never does that, so I let her run over my fingers. I counted 4 eggs. Everything is ready to go wondering if they are going to be fertile or not.

Nope she was breed last year not this year. So they are either infertile or they are retained sperm. They were all little normals.

Well she just had her pre lay shed. She's camped out in her box and I'm impatiently waiting for her to lay.

I imagine they will all be duds but hey who knows!

Not yet. She generally drops the full 10 days after. She's all chilled out in her lay box and growing fatter by the day. I want to weight her to see how much she weighs now but don't want to disturb her.

I check every five seconds through the entrance hole!!! SHE IS HUGE! I wish she would come out so I could weigh her but I don't want to disturb her. I don't think I have ever seen her this huge before. I have until about the 7th before she lays but I'm hoping she goes sooner for her sake. She'll never get her girlish figure back after this batch!

Well she came out for a quick drink and to relieve herself so I gave her a weigh. She is 603g :O she's a fat lady. I could feel the eggs but they felt pretty tiny, not that that would indicate duds but I think it's a sign that they might be.

Well eggs have started!!! I see duds for sure. But she's only laid a few so far. One looks...not dud like. I will update in a little while.

Eggs

Well she only laid a few. Two might be viable. But I'm not holding out much hope. They are settled in the incubator and I'll check them in a few days and see what the results are. Since she didn't have a male this year I doubt very much any will make it.

Hmm. They look possible! I've incubated eggs from females who haven't been paired before, and taken them out to 80-90 days, before they went bad. The one time I had retained sperm eggs, I didn't know, because she also bred the same year with a different male.
