What do breed to a snow

I do agree with Beth to the point of some research is needed. There are some good sticky's to in the genetics and breeding sections plus some books we can refer you to. But you really need to understand basic genetics. Those of us like starevol don't need to ask what would I get if I bred this to that. And again SHE is right if we didn't know the genetics we would know exactly what we would like to breed to test possible hets.

However, I do have to give you major brownie points for doing your best at finding homes before you breed. Now be prepared that half of those homes will back out by the time the babies arrive.
 
Right now the corn snake market is in the toilet, and sinking fast. So it does kind of fry me when I see noobies breeding whatever to whatever with no clue of where they are going. Not that I am afraid of competition, or anything like that. I am breeding one clutch this year myself. Because I am moving all my other adults are with other people on breeding loans, and I am quite happy with the arrangement as a half a clutch is easier to sell than a whole one. (Does this make sense?). And this year the people taking care of my pets for me get to keep most of the babies anyway.

If I had a snow, I probably wouldn't breed her with the way the market is right now, as snows aren't terribly exciting.

If I had a snow and was bound and determined to breed her come heck or high water....this is how I would approach it....

A snow is a homozygous amel, and homozygous anery combination.
Do you know if your girl has hdden hets? If not, then we can assume only what we know for sure.

All you can possibly get from a snow with no hets is either more snows, amels, anerys or normals depending upon the male you pick for her.
None of that is terribly exciting.

HOWEVER....are there any other genes out there that are enhanced by combining them with anery or amel?
I think there are!!!
The trouble is, you would end up with all normals in the first generation, and the exciting stuff won't show up until you breed those babies together.

But if you have the space to keep quite a few babies and grow them up, it might be worth it. And I love normals myself, I have 6.

With amel.....if you like butters, breed her to a caramel. If you like opals then breed her with a lavender male. I wouldn't breed any charcoal with her to make blizzards because I find charcoal and anery too hard to tell apart.

I think the anery gene is a little more exciting and versatile.
Lava or sunkissed combined with that are really nice.

And any of those suggestions combined with bloodred or diffused, like a fire or a plasma or a caramel blood would be fine with either amel or anery.

But a pet shop snow, no, personally I wouldn't go there. I wouldn't breed her. But that is just me.

I have a female snow that I have bred to a motley diffused and I got half anery's and half normals with some looking partially motley. Thats all the genetic info I have of both parents. I would like to get a male snake that I could breed to the female and get snows but I would like to get something better or more unique than a snow. A motley or stripe snow would be the lowest "if you will" I would consider. I am wondering can you breed blizzards or avalaches or whiteouts to a snow and get snows still? I apologies for my lack of knowledge and appreciate your comments. I have read that snows are het for anery and amel so I am assuming the male diffused was het anery and motley?

It took me about a year to understand basic genetics, and even then, sometimes a snake carrying a heterozygous gene can still have some of that gene's color And/Or pattern "leaking through".

Snow is homozygous amel and anery. Whether the anery is A or B, it is still a form of 'snow'. If other color genes get in the mix, then you'd get a snow with hets. And some of those het colors might 'leak through', so the snow has some additional colors showing.

This is a Caramel Snow. Caramel + Anery A + Amel.

This is a Coral Snow. Anery A + Amel + a couple of other color genes which I will not disclose.

This is a Bubblegum Cornsnake. Some argue "it is just a snow".

This is a Champagne. She is also patternless. Champagne has been proven to be a gene which can be outcrossed to wild caught corns and reproduced in the F2 generation. Champagne is not "just a snow".

In the event you find a female blood ghost motley stripe het amel, and cross her with your male snow composed of anery a & amel, which is not homozygous for motley stripe, and not heterozygous for motley stripe, then you would get, in the F1 generation:
normal cornsnakes
anery a babies
anery b babies
snow babies
they should all be het for motley, motley stripe, bloodred (diffused), & hypo a. Should be, no guarantees. I prefer to believe that:
Hets must be proven; otherwise they are only 'possible hets'. This is especially true when a messload of genes are possibly in the hets.
You would have to raise them up and breed them back together, and then you would have chances at producing (in the F2 generation):

Another point If eel worth tossing out here is that there are different kinds of stripe.
There is
Stripe which contains no motley
there is Motley Stripe, which retains the little bridge of motley pattern across the top of the neck just behind the head
there is Tessara
and there is Widestripe.

No one is trying to belittle you here. The site owner, Rich, has told people to knock it off. That is like defending you.

It seems to me like you are trying hard to understand genetics. Keep studying. It takes time, and there are a lot of morphs that appear similar. Pricier, more uncommon snakes are not necessarily easier to sell than the more common morphs. But a clutch of babies is a LOT of work. Please just do your research about all aspects of breeding- that's all anyone is asking.
 
I concur Nanci. coming here and trying.. asking questions.. good for you. I was lucky when I got into corn snakes. I didn't know a thing about them and looked up the first site online that could help me and I found cornsnakes.net. I called and found one of the nicest guys in the world who took the time out to spend over 2 hours explaining genetics to me on the phone. It's not an easy thing to grasp.

Here's something that may help. You can imagine genes of an animal (specifically snake here) like rungs on a ladder. You need TWO genes to make a single rung in the ladder. Certain rungs are not interchangeable with each other - say the Amelanistic set of genes is not interchangeable with Anerythristic. They are two separate 'ladder rungs'.
Now, there are different types of anrythristic affects, hypomelanistic affects.. etc that ARE NOT interchangeable; Like Anery A and Charcoal.
To make the affect you want show through, both genes on your ladder rung must have both (two) genes for that specific affect (applicable only to that spot) instead of the 'normal, wild' type gene. This is homozygous.
Heterozygous (or het) means that your animal only carries 1 (one) of that specific gene you want connected with the other gene (making the rung) which would be normal type. The animal will LOOK normal but will still be carrying 1 copy of the gene you want (anery, amel, whatever).

This all comes from inheritance from the parents. Thus the punnett square.

Here's an example of 1 parent having the wild type (green) and the other parent being het for yellow:

A punnett square will show you what your CHANCES are of what the babies will be. One parent is het, another normal.. they will all LOOK normal but 50% of the babies will have the 'yellow' banana gene.
If both parents are homozygous, both will be carrying the necessary copy of BOTH genes for that ladder rung (thus visible) and ALL babies will also be het. No chance for wild type.

I'm sure I've made this confusing. :(
 
You know, I feel like I understand genetics pretty much, but then someone will come along and be able to reel the odds of a certain morph right off their tongue like an expert cribbage player who sees a hand and doesn't need to count. I can _almost_ feel that now, with the basic two or three gene combinations. It is almost within my grasp, but I have to really think about it, still. And I've been studying it for years.

There is constructive criticism and then there are people like ratlover over here who forget where they started and don't know what the dirt under there throne feels like anymore. I do intend to continue reading this book and I have a couple more in mind to get. So don't worry I won't let a rude expletive like this bring me down. However I don't think I will be visiting this site for awhile because I am not getting sucked into this crap, I have better things to do.

I want to say that I am sorry about the way I treated you in this thread. I do think it is really great that you are trying to learn this stuff. I have been keeping corns for years and the motley/stripe, ultra, and dilute genes STILL have me completely confused.

I joined this place years ago, and the past few I have seen prices going lower and lower on just about everything cornsnake. So, after Rich came on and said to knock it off, I decided to try to answer you as truthfully as I could, as if your snowy girl was mine. And I did. Considering the way the market is now, I wouldn't breed her, BUT I also tried to answer you considering what I would do with your girl if I did have her and wanted to breed her. I am sorry if that response rubbed you the wrong way, but I was trying to answer your question.

Sometimes the nicest things can come out of "just' normals.

In looking at your signature, I noticed that you have 3 other corns, as well as some other very interesting critters. What other types of corns do you have? And are you considering purchasing more, maybe to create something interesting with your snow?

are they locality? What types are they? I kept rosies before I got into corns and still have 3 elderly ones left.

Don't worry about figuring out the odds of any particular combination of genes. It's a wasted effort of brain cells. Luck plays a MUCH bigger role in what you will get simply because of the smallish size of the sample being worked with. Statistics of this nature are really only meaningfull with a large data sample. When you are talking about 1 in 256 odds and only produce 16 babies, the percentages are basically an exercise in futility to even consider. You will get what you get, and no way to change that.
