What happened?

Tribal, do you have a CO2 detector in the house?

Yes, there's one on each floor of the house, a total of 3. The one on the first floor is in the living room.

My other 2 ate just fine last night, and each was reinspected for mites along with the vivs. Nothing was found. The adults are in seemingly perfect health (thank god).

I will continue to look at possible environmental factors and watch my others for signs of illness. Thank you all very much for your thoughts and replies. I will update when I have more info or find something questionable.

Did you have the heaters on thermostats, and measure the temps right in the middle of the UTH?

Actually, we weren't using UTHs with these vivs (both of our adults do have them). We were using small lamps with 60 watt ceramic heat bulbs. Temps are measured at the top of the Aspen. I know this is not the recommended heat setup, but the ambient temps are always at good levels, so I didn't see the need to change it up.

Also, none of my vivs are on thermostats, but that will be changing very soon ... like this week.

I hate to say it, but that may be it. An unregulated heat bulb. I think a light in general is very stressful to hatchlings, but it was more likely the unregulated heat beating down on them.

While you may see the temp is good when you first put the heat bulb on, keep in mind when you go to work or the store, and the light is still on, it continues to get hotter and hotter and hotter.

Especially that you say you werent using this method with the snakes who are still alive.

Was there any new environmental factor in the house; pest treatment, over-heated non-stick cookware, room deodorizer, anything like that? It is very odd that they would both die the exact same day. I'm sorry...

There are mites that live in aspen and other bedding, but they aren't the kind that feed on snakes. I would think that if you had such a severe snake mite infestation that they could kill a snake, you could hardly miss them on the snake.

Uh oh....I have a room deodorizer in my snake room :(
