What have I got here? Newbie wants to know

And I must say a smaller water bowl doesn't mean they won't poop in it. I put that size of bowls in with my females when they are about to lay eggs to avoid them laying in the water (don't think it'll matter as they prefer their laying box but oh well... won't hurt), and one of them insists on pooping in that little bowl :D

aw he's lovely! dont worry too much about being bitten-easier said than done i know but it really doesnt hurt although it might make you jump a bit. my kasey has only ever bitten me once and i've had her since she was about 7 months old. squidward on the other hand is just like his namesake, a grumpy little so and so, and i've been bitten many many times by him, although i have only had him two weeks so i guess i can give him a break lol. just leave him be for about a week or so to settle in before you even attempt to handle him as the move will have been very stressful for him. take things nice and slow and im sure you'll have no problems

It varies a lot from snake to snake. If you watch closely his skin will become dull and a little opaque. After a while his eyes will go cloudy and blue. They will stay like that for several days, you snake will become less active, may stay in it's hide or soak a lot in it's water bowl. Then the eyes will clear up and look normal again. They will usually shed a few days after that. The shedding itself only takes a few minutes if all goes well. The skin will all come off in one piece. If he is too dry the skin will come off in pieces. That is why it is good to raise the humidity in the cage at shedding time. Get a squirt bottle and mist his cage a couple times a day.

Well folks thanks for your help looks like Cornfed will be doing just fine. He ate 1 live mouse and a live rat without any problems. He did how ever eat the rat feet first but I read somewhere that it did happen sometimes.

His viv is all cleaned up and redecorated I hope you will be proud of me...........LOL :)

I did buy him a frozen rat that I will try out next week but live was quite a thrill to see.

Is it better to feed 2 every 2 weeks or one every week. The guy where I bought the feeders said I could do either and that I was better to feed rats because of their nutritional value........ Could someone comment on that?

Anyway I really like the little snake the fear of being bit is slowly fading away the more and more I play with it.

Now if that was the case for wify.............. Supposedly she can't sleep since she knows we have him in the house. Maybe I should of consulted before buying.....;) OH WELL!!!!! looks like I'm in the snake house for a while

Here he is in his new home.......

Thanks for the pics :D the tank looks good, just be thinking about a bigger one a.s.a.p. most of us feed frozen adult mice. I think I remember that rats have a higher fat content then mice, which is debatable if that's good or not lol (we generally try to avoid fattening foods you know) Feeding 1 item once a week is the favored option as well. His eyes do look blue to me, but that could just be the flash I guess. And P.S your wife will get over it being in the house lol.

I agree on the rats have more fat and while this guy could use some weight.

I do have a question that snake doesn't looks like it weighs 600+ grams. A rat (what size rat) and a mouse is alot of food. If you put that snake in with a live rat and mouse you are lucky it is still alive. If yu can only find live kill the mouse first, there are many instances on this forum of snakes damaged by live food. Also just because he got the food down today he could regurg until the food digests up to 72 hours.
Viv looks better but agree get a bigger one soon

There may be no concern since no one has mentioned this yet, but it looks like you put a self cut branch in there with him. In my experience, its always a good idea to disinfect any natural wild branches or sticks with a bleach solution, and or a good hour or two in an oven set at 200-250 degrees, this way tou kill any mites/bugs that may be in the said decoration. Just a thought :)

Yup all disinfected and I will verify the weight in one or or two days and check back with you but I'm sure he was .658g before feeding.

Well guys here he is in his new home. I picked up this exoterra viv that is 36X18X18 this morning washed it all good and here it is all set up for little Cornfed.... LOL!!!!!

Thanks for all the help I'm still having a hard time telling if he is sick or if he is shedding but so far looks like shedding.

I would also like to know any tricks to warm up the viv since its in the basement its pretty much cool down there and I have a hard time getting it any higher than 72 in there. Must be warmer on the floor where the heat pad is set up but the ambient air is hard to warm up.

I blocked off one side of the top screen to stop the warm air generated from the lamps but with one lamp it wasn't enough no I have 2 so we will have to wait and see I just set it up 30 min. ago. I will post back.

Here are the pic's Before and after what do you think? I hope the little guy doesn't grow much more cause its the last time I change his habitat..............

That viv looks great! And he's enjoying the branch. I wouldn't worry too much about air temperature in the viv, he will get down on the warm spot on the floor if he needs to, as long as that is about 80-85F he can regulate his temperature properly.

NICE terrarium!! I have two of these coming hopefully tomorrow (supposed to be tomorrow anyway) 18x18x18 though. he looks very happy in there! how long have his eyes been "blue" or glossy? also, how's the humidity in there? I wouldn't go overboard with the lighting, that will most likely drop the humidity, making it hard for him to shed.

Welcome to the forum! Your normal is very lovely. I agree--he's definitely blue... In that last pic (new viv), you can see his belly checkers are faded out and grey.

I do hope you plan to switch him to frozen/thaw, or at least pre-killed, prey. It's much safer for your snake... Heck, it wouldn't be a stretch to say it's even healthier than live.

The viv looks good... Don't you love those Exo-Terras? A hide on the cool side would probably be appreciated, by the way. I agree with Avid about the lights... Too many can dry out the enclosure enough that he may have trouble shedding. You can try slipping a moist hide in there (in the middle, maybe behind that branch, would work) so he has that humid retreat in case the tank DOES dry out too much.

Another note... That hide looks pretty big, even for your big boy. You can trade it for something maybe half (or even a quarter) the size, and have more room for other hides and a maybe even a bigger water dish.

Beautiful critter! He looks a little silvery. Does he have any Miami phase in him?

Could someone tell me what is Miami Phase?

I can't wait for my book on corn snakes to come in. I ordered the corn snake manual by Bill and Kathy Love. Its not the latest edition but it will probably do until I find myself a 1$ second edition on ebay:))))
