What Substrate/Bedding Do You Suggest?

I agree, I just got some aspen from Petsmart. I paid $13+ including tax for a huge bag. 20 cubic feet I think it was. That will last me while.

I purchased the same bag at the same store Lenny. I did notice that it came in smaller packages labeled for reptiles and that it was indeed more expensive (as someone else here already mentioned). It amazes me how companies market the SAME EXACT product in different ways and how much more expensive it can be based on the marketing technique. I guess that's how they stay in business...I really learned to research, research, research before buying anything. I take notes! LOL

I buy those large bags of Kaytee Aspen from Petsmart. It only costs $10.99 for a bag that expands to 52 cubic feet!! It's kiln baked and free of any aromatic oils. Both me and my snakes love it. :)

Lisa, I just switched mine over yesterday from the Repti Bark and I do notice a smell though. Is that just the natural smell of the aspen? The Kaytee Aspen is the one I purchased as well.

Yes, that is just the natural smell, not that of any harmful oils. :)

at first, i used some type of whitish beddding and then switched tho aspen. it gives more of a natural look and my baby corn loves it!! :)

I absolutely love aspen but there is one drawback at least for my wife and I. It makes me hack a lung up and seems to irritate my breathing. Besides that the snakes love it.

Well thanks for that info Rocky. One of my daughter's has some breathing issues so I'll keep watch for anything unusual. I actually like the smell but I'm not in my son's room as much as he is. He hasn't even mentioned that he smells a difference....typical nine year old I suppose. LOL

I'm currently using plain Aspen, but I'm going to try a blend of Eco Earth and Aspen. As long as the Eco Earth dries out, I think it'd be a pretty decent substrate.

I plain aspen...the brand i use is Premier Pet...the huges bag thats expands to 5.0 cubic feet..and i buy two at a time. I use up a half of a bag changeing out substrate for my snakes(i have 8) and cleaning out my mice and rat(pets not feeders) cages.

Since someone bumped this up I just have to post an "update" on the Aspen. I hated it! My humidity was staying at a nice 43% without spraying at all when I used the Repti Bark. I switched to the Aspen and my humidity dropped to 35/36% without spraying. I hated the Aspen. It stuck to my clothes. Anytime I even reached my hand inside the enclosure (mine is 260 gallons), it would stick to me. Not fun.
I purchased a bag of cypress mulch and placed a layer of that on top of the Aspen but eventually (within a few weeks) went back to the Repti Bark. Out of everything I've personally used, I like the Repti Bark best. The only draw back I've found with using Repti Bark is that Markey doesn't burrow under it as much as she does with the Aspen.
I did leave a small section of Aspen in the enclosure just so she could burrow nicely.
