So, after a run of some not so good luck...there's been a ray of sunshine! My boyfriend has a steady job that pays better than mine now, and he had his first payday on the 13th (talk about just in time, hey?). We've paid a few bills, had a romantic evening out, and for a very romantic gift, he bought me everything I need to outfit two more tanks for cornsnake tanks. Or...at least I thought they would be for corns.
My plans (so carefully thought out) were to get a granite hatchling, and a female bloodred het for aneryA hatchling from some girls who just got a shipment in from RRRcorns in BC (actually, they would have to order me the granite, but they already have the bloodred). They're beautiful morphs, and I love the look of the animals on Rebecca's website and the girls are really great to do busniess with (i get my feeders there)...so that was plan A.
Then, a guy who runs a feeder supply company near me recieved 1:1 western hognose as part of a trade, and is not interested in them. They apparently have bad attitudes (not really bad, but they do strike) but are great feeders and are about 2years old. I've done just about as much reading as is possible on these guys, and am aware of their rear-fanged/sorta-hot status. I've got the time and patience to work with them to calm them down. I feel equally capable with either corns or hognose.
the corns would be a little more expensive, as the guy selling the hoggies is letting them go for 100$. (he's a well respected member of the herp community, so i know its not because of ill health. he just needs the space they're taking up and isn't interested in working with them...and he did say they were a little bit ill-mannered)

So if you had to make this choice? and don't say all of them because thats totally not an option...

If *I* had to make the choice, I'd go for the corns. As much as I love hognose, I have no interest in owning them at this time. That's just my opinion though...

Western hoggies all the way for me! But seriously, get whichever pair will make you happier!

I'd scoop up the hognoses in a Noo York minnit. But both choices are good :)

This is part of it, as they're not commonly kept around here. I've had my ear to the ground for a while...this is the first whisper of 'hognose' I've heard for almost a year. This doesn't mean that they're -impossible- to find. Just not as easy as the corns.
They are cute..and interesting...but still...

If I was there I'd buy them right away at that outstanding price, and then you wouldn't have to agonize over the choice.

If hognoses are hard to find in your neck of the woods, grab while the grabbing is good if you think you want them at all!

I'd get the corns, because I'm done adding species, but hoggies are super-cool. Lots of them strike, but it's all a big bluff. I think I'd be disappointed if I had them and didn't have a hissy one! I bet they settle down nicely. Probably have been flipped all over the place and don't trust any humans right now. If they are scarce, you'll have a nice market for babies! I wouldn't give the rear-fanged deal another thought. They will probably bluff, not bite. If they do bite, unless it's a hunger bite, no big deal. If they try to eat you, take your hand away instead of letting them chew on you!

that last bit is good advice to be sure :roflmao:

Also, your first sentence is a good way of putting the main reservation I have. I would like to know quite a bit about a few species, rather than a little bit about many. Although I don't know if three is really a big enough number to really worry like that...lol

Pics to make a proper choice...lol

The hoggies in question:

Had to be corns, hands down. I'm not a huge fan of Hoggies to begin with, but the corns are two of my favorite morphs!

If it were me, definately the corns!!
2 great morphs of my favorite species....

other people like the hoggies though, and if they are rare and you are thinking of breeding, you may do well with them.
They are just not for me.

I voted hoggies, but our opinions don't matter really. Do you plan to breed either? If so or even not, which interest you more? It's all about what you really want in the end:)

Well, $100 for a pair of 2yr old Hognose Snakes sounds like a great deal. I've always been interested in getting one, and at that price (and with the photos), I would be very tempted to jump on that deal... However, a Granite and Blood Red pair sounds excellent too. But I'm not so much as interested in a particular morph as I am their individual appearance, so it would definitely depend on exactly what the Corns looked like. If they looked like my Granite and Blood Red (because I personally love how they look), I wouldn't think twice about it, that would be my choice.

I guess it depends on what the Corn Snakes look like. The Hoggies look amazing, and the deal seems tough to pass up. But a picture of the Corns might would make it easier for me personally to choose. I wouldn't personally get a snake that I couldn't see first (with some exceptions), so unless the Corn Snakes have photos, the Hognose Snakes would be my choice!

Sorry... I'm sure my vague opinion didn't really help! But best of luck to you, and best wishes to whichever you choose :)!

If you want a hognose and like the species, I'd say go for the hognoses... It sounds like they're few and far between in your area, and this is even a good price--so why not? Corn snakes are always going to be there when you're ready for more.

On the other hand, if hognoses don't REALLY interest you much, or at least as much as corns, it may be a better idea for you to go for the corns...

Basically, get the hognoses if they interest you, but don't JUST get them because it's a good deal. That's my vague and slightly convoluted $.02... Heh.

So you're asking a bunch of corn snake lovers if you should get the corns or the hoggies? What did you think we would say! J/K Get the hoggies if you've been on the lookout for a year. I would rather not regret missing the chance.

lol...hoggies -do- interest me. I've planned on having ONE at somepoint...but as they've been hard to find they were on the someday list. I dont know that I would be ready for breeding as soon as..what? spring? (I was planning on getting hatchling corns, so thats at least three years :p) I suppose just because they could doesn't mean that breeding HAS to happen. i never plan on identifying myself as a snake breeder, but I would like to go through the whole process once or twice.
I know this is a cornsnake site (so really, the answer would seem obvious...lol) but its also full of snake lovers, and I thought that if I was having a tough time with choosing between two species, this would be a good place to hash it out!
The strange thing is, that it IS a good price, and everyone on the other forum is talking about how awsome they are and how good the price is...but no offers (publicly) as of yet...the price started at 200$.
I guess the way it boils down is 'I could get the corns anytime, and the hoggies only now, but am i ready for the things the hognose bring with them?'
I feel I am, but the corns are real beauties...I dont have pics of the AUCTUAL snakes, but I've seen Rebecca's stock on her forum and on her website, and this is where the hatchlings come from. I'm QUITE confidant of their quality. :)
At this rate I'm going to have to go eenie meenie miney mo...LOL

Just because Hoggies a rarer where you are doesn't mean there will be an automatic market for them.... It may be that people are not as fond of them, so suppliers don't source them very often....
When ever Hoggies come into the shop they tend to hang around for ages, where as Corns are being sold all the time....
The same goes for Kingsnakes.... They aren't popular either...
So it's different fashion trends in different places IMO...
Which ever you choose I'm sure you will like it and be perfectly happy....
