Hiya,

I bought a new batch of pinkies...they dont look right!!

Anyone know what the white stuff is on the skin? Will it harm my snake feeding him these?

By the way this guy has been defrosted in warm water....the white patches were not obvious until defrosted.

Cheers Guys

Ok thanks Tula your a star.

Will they adversly affect the health of my snake in the short term? Is it advsied i dont use them at all? I assume if they have been in the freezer for ages then their nutritional value would be alot lower than a freshly frozen moose?

You hit the nail on the head my dear... I have fed freezer burt pinks/fuzzies before, but I had nothing else at the time. Personally I would take them back and ask for fresh pinks.

Ok thanks alot mate much appreciated.

Atleast now i know the shops stock is old, maybe this would not have shown up on fuzzy aged mice and older.

I have seen it on fuzzies, but never with hairy mooses. But you can tell when they have been lying around for a while, usually they have limbs missing or scabby tails.

Ah yea, a fair few of the pinkies in this batch have missing limbs. I will find another source asap!

Mooses :) :)

Yea my local store. They don't even know the genetics of my little snakey. Apparently it could be from a US breeder or a UK breeder...very specific aey!! I also remember one of the shop assistants saying they kept a corn once with no UTH or any form of heat source for that matter. Not very impressive.

My list of online pet stores has grown considerably in the last few weeks. I am tempted to order some frozen magical mooses online.

Ok cheers, have added to favourites :)

I'm not too bothered about it being economical, i only have the one snake so a bunch of mooses every few weeks/months won't break the bank. Id rather get some good quality pimkies and have to pay the extra cost of shipping than go back to my local store.

A tenner a K, wow thats awesome. Far cheaper than my local. Those Burnt mice were about 50p each, they onyl weight a few grams. Therefore a K would cost loads!!

10K's of magical mooses......wow you must have no human food in your freezer! Although considering ur in the arctic you could probs leave them outside and they would stay frozen ha ha ha :)

LOL they ain't in my freezer, but they do take up most of the space in ma pals freezer ;-p Beautiful rat fuzzies and extra large mooses galore!

Just to ad:

1. Freezer burn may not indicate old age. It could merely represent being stored in the freezer in a container that was not air tight. I've heard of many breeders/owners that have fed freezer burnt food items with no ill effects. :shrugs:

2. Legs and tails of pinkies can and will break off due to being handled often . . . such as in a pet store . . . that may have a hand digging into the bag several times a day . . . to get out pinkies . . .

Just another angle to look at . . . :)

I freeze my own pinkies, and if they aren't vacuum sealed, and as I get more pinkies out of the bag if I don't squeeze as much air out as possible, this can show up in two weeks or less. I personally don't consider two week frozen pinks old, maybe it's my freezer temps, maybe it's something to do with humidity in the air here in Florida getting in the bag when I open it and along with air doing something, I have no clue. I do know that it takes no time at all to show up on my pinks. My snakes can't possbly eat the pinks I have in less than two weeks. I think it also has to do with the very thin, delicate skin a newborn pinky has as I haven't noticed it showing up as quickly in rat and mouse babies that are about to start growing hair.

Ok great. Thanks alot for all your input guys. I would be very interested to learn a little more about 'Freezer Burn', what it actually is, what the reaction is that is actually taking place to cause this. I Will see what i can dig up.

Really?? It is fine? Haha, I've always been told not to eat anything freezer burnt. Does that mean that it won't hurt the snakes? Also, how long can you leave mice in a chest freezer?

From the website listed above by Drizzt80 (thanks Drizzt80) ;

I found this answer on another thread =====>>> Frozen Storage Info.

Vacuum sealed and unopened, they'll last up to 3 years.

In airtight ziplocks with air removed, 6 months.

In airtight sealed tupperware in freezer, up to 1 year.

I invested in a cheap small vacuum sealer, well worth the money and effort to vacuum seal them so they last significantly longer.

Hope this helps ya dude.
