Where does the money...

Where does the money go when you pay to become a contributing member? If it goes towards the site do you guys think it would benefit the page having a 'donation box' for the site. I'd happily donate to help keep the site that has given me endless amounts of information.

I think it would benefit more to have a donation box aswell then, i think more people would be happy to chuck in a couple £ than pay 25 upfront ya know

No, it wouldn't.
$25 a year is peanuts and with that you can edit your posts, and are able to post ads in the for sale section.
A donation box would just make a huge mess of things. Besides, this site has been doing justttttt fineeeeeeee and has been around long before I joined 7 years ago. I think Rich knows what he is doing......he has been doing this awhile now.

The issue with doing small donations can be the processing fees taken out by the handling companies. Paypal charges a small amount with each transaction.

What you could do instead is every time you think about donating a small amount, save it. When you have $25 saved up, do the contributing member donation. :D

Alright dude chill out. I don't see how it would make a mess of things :/, maybe you could tell me how it would...
So it mainly benefits the breeders and sellers then by the sounds things, i don't need to edit a post because i usually double check what i post.
$25 may be peanuts to someone with 11000 posts but i and probably a lot of other people who use these forums cant justify paying that much for a site they just come on every now and then.
But then who am i to say, i haven't been on here for 7 years.

I see what you're saying, thanks for not biting my head off about it :)
I'd probably end up doing over $25 within no time at all, i just empty out my bank out as soon as it fills up lol, i spend whatever i cant take out in note form on the net on what ever looks good :p

No worries at all.

I figured I would explain the reason why smaller donations can be a challenge.

It's a fabulous idea in thought, but a wee bit harder to put in practice.

Slide a note away in a crisp tin once in a while for safe keeping. It's bloody hard to do though. I always see shiny things that need purchasing.

It pays for hosting expense, maintenance expenses, and other upkeep things around the site.

The donations also help pay for this habit of eating regularly that I have become addicted to over my lifetime. Since Connie and I retired the SerpenCo business, the websites are now our sole source of income. I'm expecting social security to go belly up the day before I apply for it....... :(

And who the heck knows how long the money we have saved for retirement will be worth a hill of beans.

As I have mentioned before, this site only remains while it is operating in the black. I can no longer afford to pay out of pocket to keep it around. So if it goes in the red, unfortunately it will have to be gone.

Is it possible to have merchandise as well? Like a Zazzle or redbubble store with shirts, coffee cups, mousepads, etc. ?
It would be another bit of money coming in and I'd personally get a cornsnakes.com coffee mug to thaw out mice in. :) The husband gets nervous when I just go to the cupboard and get a random one.

My other half would throw me out I think... :flames:

Haha right! The people we live with were startled when I brought the mouse-sicle up from the basement today, and then grabbed a random coffee cup and started thawing it!

Problem with merchandise (as much as I LOVE that idea!), then Rich has to pay to buy the merchandise, as well as hoping that it can all sell without going into the red.

Ah true. I figured with a site like Zazzle where it is printed as it sells that wouldn't be much of an issue. Of course, I don't know what percentage of sales they keep, so it might not be worth it.

It's still pretty difficult. It might be different depending on where you go, but when we order inventory at work, if any of us want anything we add it onto our orders because most places require you to buy a certain number of things, not just one or two. Like when we make post cards, we have to order 500. Stuffed animals, at least 20, etc.

I see what you're saying, If people were patient Rich could wait till there's good amount of orders before getting some stock in.
