yea i have a hide on the hot side and a log and plants on the cool side, and yes i mesure when the hides are in place..

O.K. Then one more question. If you have a lot of substrate, does your snake like to burrow? If you have a UTH attached to the bottom, then I'd measure directly over the glass to make sure the temps aren't excessive there. It might be 81 on top of a thick layer of substrate, but over 100 on the glass. If you have one that likes to burrow, you're going to have to insulate that portion or risk a burn. Especially if you're using an unregulated UTH. I've never seen one that doesn't get VERY warm. I don't use thermostats, but I don't attach my UTH directly to the tank either. I use a piece of glass and attach the UTH to that.

yea he likes to burry himself, but, ive just got of the phone with a snake expert and she said that 65 at night and 75 in the day for his warm side is fine, cuzz i have a cold house, but she said thats fine, also i asked about the UTH before i got the snake and she said just plug it in and it should stay the same, its one just made for corn snakes i think, but she also said dont put the UTH under the tank she said put it inside under the bedding cuzz it will make things warmer...

That doesn't sound like too much of an expert to me if she can't even get the recomended temps right.
Your temps need to be around 75 on the cool side and 85 on the warm side. You do need some way to regulate your UTH or it will get too hot. From my own personal experience, I would never have an unregulated UTH, ever. One of my snake's tanks was a perfect 85 on top of the substrate, but when I put the probe directly on the glass, it read a shocking 130. At the very least, get a lamp dimmer.
Definitely don't put the UTH inside the tank, unless it is one designed specifically to go inside. The risk of burning your snake is far too great.
