I am a beginner in keeping snakes.I just bought my snowcorn last week.It seems to be afraid of me.Whenever i try to handle it,it just try to hide from me,and run away from me.Must i provide a hidding place for my snake in its tank? And it poo once everyday. It only ate a pinkie last week when i bought it.Does all cornsnakes poo everyday? Is this normal?

The baby cornsnake will be afriad of you for some time. This is natural. The snake will never love you, never want to be pet, and never cuddle up with you. With time, handling and age it will grow to be a snake that most likely won't bite and is easy to pick up and handle but they will never become tame or friendly. And that's 100% normal. Especially hatchlings.

I would provide two hiding spots. One in the cool end, one in the warm end. This will give him some security.

If he ate a pinky a week ago, then you should feed him again.

and no, it itsn't normal for a corn to have a bowel movement every day. My hatchlings seem to average twice a week. Once as normal a few days after eating, and once again as soon as I put them into a freshly cleaned cage!:angry01:

I understand that snakes poo in a defensive response too. Is it pooing when you go to pick it up, or is it just in there when you go to get it out?

That's not true. :( My snake is very friendly and loving. He's really tame, even with my 4 year old niece. He's never bitten anyone or tried to, and he even lets me give him kisses. :p He's really pretty.

Actually it is true. Snakes don't have the emotional capacity to 'love' anyone. They can be tamed so that they put up with handling but that doesn't mean they feel any emotional attachment to you.

Not to ruin it for you, but 'kissing' them can be dangereous as they carry salmonella :(

about the "poo every day" bit, my adult male corn does that too. i've asked about it in the forum before, and the response i've got was that some snakes have faster metabolism, and that it could be temp related. since then i've monitored my temps and found it to be in the 78-85 F range. I've tried lowering it abit, but nope, still poo everyday. Is that a pretty significant problem, and if so, anything i could do about it?

Yep, Rachel's right on this one. It couldn't be more true than saying dogs DO enjoy affection. I have neices as well and do presentations at schools, churches and my local nature center. I also have snakes I readily hand to small children and completely trust them. But that in no way implies that the animal does anything more than tolerate stimuli that they have become accustomed to. I have seen no evidence that the snake enjoys it whatsoever... quite the contrary. They would always rather be left alone. That in NO way lessens my appreciation for the animals; in fact, it is a big part about thier appeal to me.

Same here, it makes them kinda mysterious! :p

I agree. My snake is really mellow, and is wonderful to handle. She never has offered to bite, nor has she ever shown any aggressive behavior except following a feeding, and even then, she doesn't persist. She would probably be content to keep hidden in her cave unbothered though. I like holding her too much though for that! The only thing she does seem to like, is to curl up inside your sleeve where it's warm and dark, and hang out in there. She also likes to sit in a pocket of a shirt, or my robe, and just stick her head out the top to look around. She looks so intelligent when she does that! Almost like she's scoping out the place and making plans :)
