Woah, scary thing happened.

Tom, I don’t want to beat a dead fish here but the friend I mentioned, his favorite food was shrimp. He never had any problem his whole life until that night. Boom. The doctor said that the toxins build up until your body all of a sudden can’t tolerate it any more. We were in Alaska fishing at the time. One of the guys with us was a doctor (anathesiologist, spelling?) we were preping him for a tracheotomy when he finally started to get better. That’s no kidding.

Yeah, I learned quite a bit about food allergies when I was in culinary school. From what I remember, shellfish and nuts are the two that you REALLY can't mess up with.
I will forgo the shellfish till I get an all clear from the doc, just in case.

I have to agree that the most common problem would be a seafood allergy and that you would be wise to avoid seafood until you can get tested. You could also try to take an antihistamine (like benadryl) to see if it helps your sore throat, since it sounds like you are still suffering from the sore throat.

Having said that your symptoms are a bit atypical in that they were very severe immediately and the only symptom you describe is the intense burning. I would expect that if it was such a severe allergy that you would have had other more typical symptoms such as swelling of the tongue or lips and even trouble breathing. It doesn't sound like those were an issue and if they were you are a very lucky man who should from now on carry an Epipen!

If the trash is not gone I would actually retrieve the soup and its container and see if Trader Joes had a recall on that item. It might also be worthwhile to see if the board of health or someone could test the soup for some sort of toxin. The immediate nature of your reaction does point to a toxin, irritant or allergy.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

There shouldn't be any need to need to bring any with you to the doctor to taste it. They can do a skin test for alleriges to the ingredients, either at your doc or at an allergist, and they have samples of common allergens. I had a skin prick test done on my arm, though they do them on the back too. Not painful, a little prick and just like a bug bite if something reacts.

Print up the list so they know what to test though, and if you haven't thrown out the label you may want to double check that thye haven't changed any ingredients.

Gee, Tom... I am really glad that you're okay. I'm with everyone else in going to see your PCP and/or an allergy specialist. I certainly hope you won't have to give up seafood, but better that than being sick all the time.

Did I mention... Glad you're okay! LOL.

As for sticking with the frozen mice... Man, I can't even EAT stuff that had been on the same shelf as the mice... No way, uh-uh...

HAHA! I thought I was the only weird one like that! I won't eat anything that's been sitting next to the mice bags. Don't know why since I know they haven't contaminated anything or effected anything but if that bag is touching something I won't eat it unless someone else is making dinner and I don't know that it was touching. Out of site out of mind.

Thanks everyone for the good thoughts, though I definitely dodged the bullet, be it allergies or bad fish, lol. If anything I'm lucky I had the instant reaction I did so that I swallowed nothing.
When I finally save up and see the doc, I'll let you all know what the results are, till then I'll just stay away from the shellfish altogether.
