Copperhead and Cottonmouth

Jessicat

All Pied Everything
These are the babies I just got from Tom Thompson! They've had a few days to settle in now so I figured it's time for an introduction. While I was looking at their pictures and deciding to add them to my collection my boyfriend's dad was sitting next to me talking about one of his favorite subjects.. growing up in Arkensass around poisonous snakes.
Hence the names...

Copperhead

Is a male butter motley/stripe. Yea, he looks pretty peculiar for a butter. I like it.

Cottonmouth

She was much more fidgety, it was hard to get these shots!

I'll be feeding them on Tuesday, possibly more to come then. I hope you enjoy them. I sure do.

Thanks Tom!

The "butter" looks like an amel to me. :shrugs:

They are both quite cute, though!

Yes. There was some debate on the original for sale post. I will admit I have never seen a butter with any type of red. Both of his parents were beautiful Butter Motleys though.
How long can corn snakes retain sperm for? Hey Tom, what has his mother been bred to the past few years?

I look foward to breeding trials later on, then. I have seen many butter mots and amel mots...and I'd be willing to bet that that one is NOT a butter. I hope you prove me wrong, though. :)

I thought I'd post a couple of comparison pics...

This is a butter motley hatchling:

And an amel motley het butter (excuse the poo!):

I am interested in seeing pics of the parents.

one thing

One thing I have noticed when photographing my creams and cream motleys is they always seem to turn out redder then the snakes actually are.
could this be the case here?
Does the snake look lighter in person?

I want to clarify that I am not trying to start trouble. I just do not see how that can be a butter motley. It should NOT have the reds and oranges that snake is showing.

:shrugs:

I have also noticed a slight tendency of that when taking photo's of butters. Yes the snake does look lighter in person. :)

What gorgeous little guys! And excellent names!!! Yup, that coloration is a mystery, but with mom and dad right there...Will be interesting to see further pics.

I ended up selling him because I didn't need him at the time. It's one of the ones I regret selling, though.

Tom, I am sorry I am doubting the genetics, but I have NEVER seen a butter that looked like that. I will be watching the progression pics of that one, that's for sure! I don't know how they may have produced an amel...but it sure doesn't look like any butter I've ever seen. Call me a doubting Thomas if you want...but I want to see what it looks like in a few months.

The parents are beautiful. Maybe this little one is some kind of fluke of nature? :shrugs:

(P.S. - I think we've been through this discussion before. Sorry to dredge it back up.)

By the way, I am a girl...so no "Y's" for me. :)

thats too bad, hopefully u can pop some more like that one...

and to the original post, i also am curious to see what the outcome will be. please keep us updated w/ after shed pics! :)

I'm a complete beginner with genetics, so I'm just as baffled as you, Terri. The pictures were taken in natural light but it was at sundown on a cloudy day. They're a bit dark, but the boy definitely has some red to him.
The thing that gets me is his head. I haven't seen an amel with that kind of head before. It looks similar to your butter motley's but much darker.

When I was originally looking at Tom's snakes for sale I was in the market for a Butter Motley/stripe female or at least something het. I ended up really liking the looks of this guy instead though. I'm not sure what he is exactly but I think he's beautiful. I'll definitely post more pictures of him, I'll probably start his own progression thread once he's had a few sheds with me.

Thank you, Jessica, for understanding that I am "baffled" not being difficult. :) I would never want someone to think otherwise.

I have seen MANY amels (especially stripes and motleys) that have the white-ish colored head. I will try to find some pics to show you.

I am glad you are planning on doing a progression thread on him. I am really interested in seeing how he turns out.
