So, i figured id make a new thread about this since its a big problem at the time. I just set up my new viv and realized that the top is lockable but the back of the lid can be pressed forward. it leaves about a 1/2 inch gap. there are also two small gaps in the front of screen if not pushed. i took pics of my viv and the gaps. what can i do? Someone said something about metal clips, would that work with this situation. please help me!

That looks like one of the older model Critter cages. Try lifting up on the screen the bare end in the last pic should slide into a grove allowing it to sit flush with the back.

i did that any is keeps going back to that spot no matter what and the back is fine until u press the screen forward at all, then it moves easily. ahhhhhhhh, will the clips work you think?

The clips will prevent it from being opened but if it will not close completely without them I would be worried if one of them failed.

yea me too. i mean, it looks closed but i have a feeling that a snake could open it. it a 30 gallon tank, can i buy another lid or what can i do?

btw, in case you didnt know, in the second pic i am pulling the screen forward, you just cant see my hand. it closes naturally but is easy to get an opening

That lid should close flush with the back without it being held by the pins. What is causing it to spring back open? Is teh tank new? if so I would take it back.

no :( i got it on craigslist with almost everything you see in there except a few things. it was a really good deal. i know why now tho. I need to figure something out soon because im gettin my snake in a week or two!!

Oh so it will close but you are just worried it opens easily? Then it is safe that is what the pins are used for. I was worried that something was putting pressure on the back lid to spring open and that would cause the adhesive on the pins to fail.

I have a 40 breeder that is the same way but I have never had a corn escape from it.

Most critter cages have a lock part, right? Just put a lock on it.

Also, since it was used, did you clean it thoroughly? What happened to the snake that was in it before?

yea, i cleaned it with 1 part bleach, 1 part water. i bought new bedding and soaked all the stuff inside. I then showered them off and soaked them in fresh water for 30 mins to make sure i got all bleach off then dried them and set it all up! The guy at a milksnake in there that died, but i dont know how. He didnt really say much, but everything was dusty and didnt look very clean so i cleaned everything good with a sponge.

oh, and it doesnt have a spot for a lock, except the little lock things in the front but this is happening with them in place

Here are the pins that came with mine but all you need is something small enough that wil fit into the holes to prevent it from being forced open like a small padlock like Hypancistrus suggested.

hmmm, see the difference is that the back of my viv has nothing to attach clips or a lock to. ill take a pic and show you

ohhh, ok that makes sense. so put a real lock in there instead of the little things that are in there. what can i do about the back though? i think even with a lock, it can move. how can i clip the back and where can i get the clips? or do you think the padlock will make it unopenable all together?

Do you have the pegs that go in the holes up front? If so put them in and gently see how far the top will open with them in. Remember that the screen slides into a ridge in the back so there is not a way for them to nose it open when it is shut properly.
