2014 corn breeding at Elemental Exotics.

Yeah. It's scary. I've popped & probed my BPs but these guys are so much littler and also so much wigglier...

I should try again to find a local who will show me how. I've found more than one willing to "show" me...but not let me try on their hatchlings, which I totally understand. But now I'll have my own hatchlings to possibly maim...yikes.

As of today, 13 babies have shed and been offered their first meal, 12 ate very fast and 1 refused, number 2. Not bad odds so far!

Now up to 16 great eating babies and 2 refusers. The one baby is going to go overnight still but I really don't think it's going to eat. Still waiting for the last 3 to shed.

For Megan, here are some post shed, pre-feeding attempt pictures of number 20, he does have the neatest markings! If I was keeping any, I'd be very tempted by him! It will be great if he can go to a member of this forum who will take lots of progression pictures.

Good gods, he looks even more amazing. I've wanted a phantom for ages, and now I get to have the best looking one ever. I am forever in your debt.

Well, up to 18 who have eaten and 3 refusers. Number 20 ate his first meal today and five others had their second meal. At least all of the ones that eat at all, are super enthusiastic eaters!

I've a few names floating around my head that are from the same conlang that most of my snakes are named from. Avedan is currently winning from those.

All of them have been offered food at least once now. Most have eaten twice. And there were 3 that refused their first meal but one of those just ate a boiled pink.

I just went back and looked at the beginning of this thread, and noticed you said 26 or 27 eggs. Did you miscount? Or were there that many that didn't hatch? 21 babies, right?

I'm trying to count my eggs before they hatch, so kinda looking around at what is a typical hatch rate. Bad idea, I know, cuz I know it varies widely.

Partly I miss counted, there was a big clump of eggs in the middle, three deep in places that I kept getting a different number of every time I'd count them. There were 26 eggs laid in total. One dud, three went bad early in incubation. Then, and I didn't mention this before because I was quite bummed about it, when there were just two eggs left to pip, one of them started looking very sickly. So I cut it and found a very near to term dead baby in it. It was well formed as far as I could tell but not quite complete. Could also see that it was a Phantom too. I didn't take any pictures. Unfortunately, I think I might have killed it, one time that I checked on the eggs close to hatching, I moved the moss off the clump and thought I might have knocked one of the eggs over accidentally but couldn't tell when I tried to see if they were all in the same position as before. I think that I will definitely be marking the tops of any other clutches in the future, I do that with my Crested gecko eggs but didn't think to do it with these.

Hi I'm new to this forum so I'm not sure if I'm writing in the correct place or not , well basically my female corn snake is pregnant but she is still sibt young and this is her first time . I've put her in a large box on her own and added a hiding place . 4 days ago she shed , so today I tried to see if she wants to eat which it was successful and added a plastic container with vermiculite in it , but she didn't go in it instead she went to her hiding place . Is it something I might have done wrong ? Shall I remove the hiding thing and just leave the container with vermiculite in it ? Please guys I hope you can help me out ! Thanks a lot

Tavia, sorry if my asking brought up unhappy memories. I appreciate the info.

Jessica4, you would be best off starting your own thread. Most people use vermiculite as an incubation medium (if they use it at all), but use moss in the lay box. Here are a couple links that might help:

Feel free to ask more questions. Lots of people on this forum happy to help, but like I said you will most likely get the best responses if you start your own thread.

Yay! One of the two remaining non feeder corns just ate! Only one very stubborn one left to go.
