Animal Plastics Economy Plastic Rack Review

It's here, it's here!!! This is my AP Sterilite 1758(5)EP.

I had found a group of snakes I dearly wanted, but there was just not another flat surface in my house, much less three, so in order to get the snakes I had to find a rack I could live with. I wanted something that would let me use tall enough bins to give the snakes room for climbing branches and vines. I wanted my bins to look exactly like my vivs. I really liked the look of the EP racks- nice and open for air circulation and light. I wrote to AP to see if they made that rack for 9" tall bins (thinking 12" was too much to hope for). No, but they did make it for 12" bins- perfect! I then wrote to the snake breeder to see if she would hold them for me while I waited the three-four weeks for the rack to be built. Yes!! So the deals were done. When the third week rolled around, I checked in on the rack. They said they were working as fast as they could with lots of orders and it would go out the fourth week, Thanksgiving week. But it didn't, and they promised they would send it the following Monday, but they didn't, (something personal happened) but Tuesday they sent it and refunded my shipping. (They didn't have to do that- I know they were just really busy).

The rack got here yesterday. It ships unassembled (a selling point for me, having experienced the heartbreak of custom cages arriving broken, since they are fragile and hard to pack safely). Every single piece is labeled not only with what it is, but its orientation- Left Front Top. Shelf Two-Second Down. There is an instruction sheet and a picture sheet. There is a bag of screws with about triple the number needed!!! The holes are pre-drilled, recessed, very classy. Everything fits into a slot- there is no way to put it together wrong so things aren't flush. They even tell you what setting to put the drill on so as not to strip the screws or mar the rack. It took me about 30 minutes to assemble it. One person alone can do this easily. AP's phone number is right on the instruction sheet, just in case.

The material the rack is made of is a barely-glossy black plastic, heavy, with a satiny feel. It doesn't feel or look plasticy- it looks like nice black wood. The assembled rack is not rickety or wobbly- it is substantial and solid. It is easy for one person to move. The edges in front are all nicely rounded, and the shelves stick out a little bit which is a really nice look.

The Sterilite 1758 66 quart bins fit with about a 1/4" gap at the top. I would feel safe with an adult, but I think a hatchling could escape. Fortunately, with the lids on, the bins very tightly still slide in.

Ok, here are the pics!

Another view. That's Nola, the robot, cleaning up all the little bits of styrofoam and stuff from the packing, BTW. The empty bin on the bottom is Jake's feeding bin, which used to live on the couch!

I am 100% satisfied with the quality of this rack, as well as the customer service of Animal Plastics.

Nanci, I'm glad you finally got your rack! I love my Animal Plastics rack so much. It's been working without a hitch for a year now.
The only problem with keeping the lids on your tubs is there will be a lot of condensation. Some of my snakes are crazy and love to tip over their water bowls. on a day to day basis. It took me a REALLY LONG time before I was comfortable to take the lids off all the tubs. Right now they are all lidless, and there have been no escapes. You're right about not keeping hatchlings in the tubs without their lids, but once they're on fuzzies or so I don't think they can get out through the gap. Your gap may be bigger than mine, but I have a small snake moved into my AP rack and she's doing just fine.

My Christmas present last year was an AP rack, and I think it will be one this year as well. I'll probably go for the economy rack this time. You said it needed to be built though? Hrm, I'd better call them ahead of time to place my order. I like the idea of larger tubs. Now if I can get them to build me a rack of larger tubs that still have the floor space..

Oh, as a side note, when I got my rack my dad and I put it together. I started taking pictures, and I was going to photo document the whole thing, but it was just so easy that there was really no need. For handy - challenged people, AP racks are great!

Good thing I went with the four rows of air holes all the way around, then! The humidity right now is 40%. No way can the water bowls be tipped. You've seen my white cages, right? If those don't have condensation problems, then I'm hoping the bins won't. Hopefully they will all be able to go lidless by spring.

Apparently AP makes the racks when ordered, and don't just have them just laying around, and right now their backlog is four weeks at least. Which is fine if you plan for that.

That rack looks great Nanci! I too, am very satisfied with my AP rack. I will probably be purchasing another from them. They have a great product, that they back up with excellent customer service, can't beat that!

It's 66" tall. I'm 5'2" and the center of the top bin is right at my eye level. Perfect.

(Notes For Later So I Can Find Them)

(Flagg)

For the AP rack, you need to put the thermostat probe directly on the heat rope. The way the rope zig-zags through the shelves, I have the thermostat probe taped with foil tape directly in one of the vertical heat rope slots. So the probe is on the side and there is no contact with the actual tubs and they can be removed easily.

It's not really feasible, or accurate, to have the stat probe inside a tub.

I run it currently at about 86 on the Herpstat and measure almost the same temps inside the tubs right over the heat rope slot.

It is heat rope, both of mine are the standard placement belly heat, which is an inch or so in from the back of the tub. Seems to work fine for me, the corns hang out in the back when they want the heat.

As for the probe placement, it's not "outside" the rack, just outside the tubs. I have it on the 2nd shelf down, but directly on the actual heat rope, taped into the groove on the SIDE panel where the heat rope is threaded through to the next level.

Why can't anything be simple? The heat cable arrived today, and was easy to install into the grooved slots. But when I went to plug it into the thermostat- the heat cable is grounded, the thermostat is for two-prong plugs...So now I need an adaptor.

Hey whoever has one of these- there is a slot for a thermostat probe, cut into the shelf, coming to within 1/4-1/2 inch of the heat cable, but not touching it, but touching the bottom of the bin at the very back. Is that ok to use? Or does the stat probe need to directly touch the heat cable?

So now that I've had my rack for a little over a month- I need another one! It is so cool! I can see the snakes enough. Now that Zee is out in the living room, I see how much he is out, and he gets handled nearly every day. (Are males starting their springtime craziness yet? Maizey and Zee are very, very active!) Cherry is out all the time, too. She's out right now! It's so simple, look at the rack, see who's out, slide out the drawer, get a snake! I love it! When I have two, then I think I'll divide the snakes into males and females. Or corns and others. Wish I'd get my W2 so I could file my tax return...

Glad you're enjoying the rack! It looks great. I am not a fan of racks in the slightest, but if I do ever start using them, that's the sort of thing I want!

I just paid for rack #2, thanks to my extra escrow for my house being refunded! Yay!! Not like I'm going to have a sudden increase in snakes- I've got two babies in ten gallons that have to go there, that only leaves three vacancies. Plus Jake's feeding bin. I _am_ plotting one snake purchase, though. And then what can I put in ten gallons- I'll have three empty ones that could house some small adult, after the corn babies outgrown them.

Nanci,
Was this a special order in size? I have one but I do not need to keep my lids on. But I agree these are by far some of the best racks out there. Mine is only 52 inches high.

Sorry Nanci, should have warned you about the 3 prong adapter. I myself am going to have to pick another one of those up. I just got my second Animal Plastics rack, an economy rack. It was a Christmas present that's finally here now, yet I am a bit unprepared to set it up yet. I need more water bowls, an adapter, and a bit of free time! :uhoh:
Can't wait to get it set up though.

No, it's not a special order, but it's not on their website. You just order it as 1758 (5) EP, black or white. And it includes heat.

And I don't have the lids on now, since I have all adults in there.

I was scared the babies could get out the air holes, so they just went in 10's and 20's, and some adults moved.

I bought six bins on sale at Target yesterday for $7 each, but I think I have one too many, because I forgot I have a whole ready-to-go bin sitting around. I was going to replace Jake's feeding bin on the bottom with a 66 qt all air-holed like the others.

I like collecting the hides and vines and stuff.
