I say hit because the masses will just be their usual zombie selves and follow what the media tells them...and all we will hear about in the media on launch day is this thing. I myself wont even go look at one unless I happen to be in the mall walking around aimlessly while my lady is shopping for clothes.

I agree with what Markus said. I think people will buy it simply because of the name.

I agree with Markus as well. I used an iPod a year back and asked the girl why she liked it: "Cuz it's cool!" I wanted to slap her so hard. D:

And, I do think Apple has a good idea, but it needs some real tweaking.

Yep, needs some work. I had an AppleZombie friend try to convince me that working on a flat pad would be exactly the same as using a laptop - only better.

well I'm sitting here with my laptop on my... er... lap (the clue's in the name, AppleBoffins). Keyboard horizontal, screen vertical. Can't imagine how I'd use an iPad comfortably in this position. Would either have to sit up and hunch over it if flat, or prop it up and type with both wrists bent backwards.

Ergonomic fail at the moment, but once they sort out the keyboard/screen orientation issue it'll be usable. Of course, then it'll be a netbook, but whut the hey.

priceless.

I was listening to 'wait wait don't tell me' on NPR today (yes I'm a nerd). I think it was a rerun, but they were talking about the ipad. One guy said, when he first saw it his thoughts were "that's it?? (disappointedly). yeah I have to have one". He thinks that's the way most people will think...not impressed, but will want one anyway.

Well I am interested in this.
I may get one eventually but not the first generation. I am not an apple geek but I do work with pc's for a living. I think this machine has possibilities to it that most people havent even thought about. But what it needs is a USB port and a SD card reader for it to be effective in my book. I do not want to buy adapters for this tech.
I think it would also be great if it had a Web Cam embedded as well.

heck, if corporations didnt feel this was the new wave of tech, then Microsoft would be having their own version as well.

When I taking my Journalism Class in 92 we talked about the future of the newspaper. We talked about it going all digital, and this was before the Web was even close to what it is now. We talked about having a device shaped like the Ipad to plug in and dial up to get your news tailored made for you. Well, we have yahoo news and msn news.. so yes, we get our news from the internet.
But these types of devices sat with me.. i thought it would be an interesting device to actually have. Soon, laptops started to be affordable and now every one owns one, not just for work any more.

But these smaller simpler devices are going to be the new thing. Just imagine having a Courier or an IPAD or similar device, with an embedded cam, and mike. Heck, it will make communication more enjoyable. I think things are changing and these devices are going to be the children of our future computers/portable devices.

Watch E Book readers start to change as well. Heck, I have seen updates on one that you can bend. Its still in the works but the tech is finally there. We will get thinner pieces of tech and eventually its going to be cheap.

So yea, I like the IPAD and I hope it does well.
And every one who says its an iphone, who wants to internet surf or read an ebook on a item that is only a 3 x 5 screen?

Oh by the way, most people and the average person wants a device that is easy to use, works and has good support and software..
This is why tech is going the way of the IPAD its easy to use.

I think I agree with you Jim. I think it's future possibilities are promising, but am not impressed by the first generation. Though I think if other corporations are also getting in on the pad-like products, then hopefully competition will encourage further advancements.

That said, I still hate the name "ipad"

Well, dang, Jim, now you've made me feel guilty and archaic for voting "flop". LOL.

But seriously, you make some excellent points. The other day I was looking (on line, probably, but can't remember where) at a Sony brand reading device. Seven inch diagonal, maybe, and usable in landscape or portrait mode. It was one non-folding piece. I like the pic you have above. The idea of folding makes me feel like I can protect the usable surface, I guess.

I am very pro-apple, in that I like the way apple products think/work. I have a desk top, laptop, and iTouch. (Although, not an iPhone person.) I'm not militantly against the iPad, but I don't see it having a use for me at this time. Awkward size. My iTouch is small enough to put IN something. I am notorious for dropping things, and that iPad is just begging to slip out from under my arm. And if I had ear plugs in, there would be the additional disconcerting (pardon the pun) sensation of my eardrums being jerked out. LOL.

Eric,
I agree about the bulkiness of it right now per-se, but I think its going to help replace most laptops.
Now lets just imagine something.. maybe down a few generations.
USB ports added to this. Then you could be propped up and then connected to a power supply to charge and keyboard and mouse hooked up. I know Apple is looking at wireless, so lets say wireless keyboard and mouse connected with a larger hard drive and the way solid states are going, its going to happen in a few years, 320 GB for cheap. this could be used as a desktop. Heck, i remember when Palm had a fold-able keyboard for their PDAs, add something like that for this.

So imagine something a bit simpler than the standard laptop that could convert into a desktop as well?
The possibilities are limitless with this technology, its there and it will happen.

The folding Pad is the Courier from Microsoft. I am interested in this as well.

But what I am more interested in about the IPAD its affordable from Apple. This is why its also going to sell. It may be the First real tech someone buys from them that isn't an Ipod.

i agree with eric on most of it. although mac's are very nice running computers. i am a microsoft man when it comes to pc's. the ear bud thing i cant stand! when you listening to something and the itouch falls and the earbuds get ripped right from your ears. i cant stand that. i also have an itouch. i feel the iphone if i were to have one is my bttery would fail on me because all day i am constantly on my phone. i dont have time to put games and apps on it. so i have an itouch. the ipad is pretty much the exact same thing as the itouch. just bigger. my itouch like eric said is small and can be put in my pocket or bag.

You guys are crazy if you think it's going to be a flop! Everything Apple does is gold. I could use one right now! And I'd use it in my home (or wherever) just like a giant iPhone that is easier to see. I bet the next generation is going to be even cooler!

All right, throw out the website and the Rokr, and you've got three things. But look at them! They are- just not right. Not all slick and shiny and cool. Plus, the price, to be an early adopter, is WAY down. It's a lot harder for a $500 thing to fail than a $1000 thing.
