Communal laying...

Agreed, Ant didn't elaborate much on his thread..But perhaps he hasn't studied what is happening he just accepts it... Like the old cowpox scenario, in use for years but it took someone to wonder how it worked and he gets remembered for eternity as the father of vaccination (can't remember his name off hand...LOL).
As for UV I believe you can keep snakes without it but they might be stunning with it....

You know how it is...You post and then later you think about what you said.....I raced back super quick ...LOL
DO NOT put an aquarium light in your viv...You will probably blind your snake...
In fact don't put any UV in your viv without doing a lot of research into whether your animal needs it...And remember the tubes come in different strengths...So get the right one....There done it .....I need to subscribe so I can edit.....

He told me someone told him to do it and he was been for the last 11 years. I am a believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it but I am compelled to oppose to his methods. Perhaps because I HAVE cohabited in the past and seen the stress related problems it can cause...

Oh I know, I wish I was as quick to realise what I have said and go and change it somtimes LOL.

I relate UV to lizards, not snakes. But I am sure it is benefitial in limited amounts. Remember though, many snakes are Crepuscular and are not actually active during the lightest parts of the day therefore do they actually benefit from UV light at all?

Thats what started me looking at snakes and UV..With no eyelids the sun can be a problem plus thermo regulating is harder if your right out in it...LOL.. But early morning and early evening the sun is lower in the sky so not as concentrated.......

I haven't read the thread on RFUK, but have been monitoring this one. I just can't see how the person in question can actually prove that the communal laying causes an increased fertility and hatch rate. Fertilization occurs long before the snakes would be put in a communal laying situation, so that part of his theory is wrong. As for the hatch rate, since we know for a fact that there are many factors that can affect it, unless he can be absolutely sure that all of them are constant and never change from one year to the next, including temperature, genetics, mold spores, incubating media, humidity, etc, his hypothesis will remain just that. There are very few snake species that exhibit communal laying behavior in the wild, and corn snakes are not one of them.

Sorry to jump in on this...Again....
I followed the thread from it's very start....Ant only posted a pic of his gravid females...He didn't make any claims as to fertility....It was two other well respected corn keepers that came to his defence, and said that his hatch rate is way above their rate and they wish they had his success...
To reiterate, Ant didn't make any claims as to it being better. He just said thats the way he has done it for the last god knows how many years...

Actually Ant did claim the reason behind him doing it this way was because of the hatch rate. And he told me this on the phone aswell. He has only tried "loner laying" once and she slugged out so he opted for communal laying. Already there is a problem as he has nothing to compare both situations, he tried once and thats all.

I've had 100% fertility in all my clutches, and every baby has hatched out of those clutches except one. Wonder what that proves....
