Controversial Topic #6: Making This Site Better

I would like to be able to edit my posts. Not so much as to change the content, but more for typo correction. Half the time I'm typing one-handed with a snake in the other hand! I'm really not a poor speller- but you know how letters get switched...

I think a waiting period would not be good. You have to remember that a lot of people are not forum savy and don't know how to search to get the results they want- so you have someone who gets here looking for hints on a lost snake, or a sick snake, or whatever- already upset and not thinking straight. Maybe if the FAQ was at the top and super-simplified for the most urgent inquiries- then a waiting period would be ok.

I love this site, though- and one thing I especially love is the ability to post lots of photos. I love seeing everyone else's herps, and when I post mine, it's convenient to be able to quickly find the pics so I can make my coworkers look! You wouldn't believe how many people I've converted from snake-haters/fearers to people who will look at a hatchling and say "How cute!"

For those of you who said you don't mind repetitive questions, or who just don't open the uninteresting topics...

Getting the newbies to read the FAQs is not only so that other members don't have to see the same question over and over. When a question is answered constantly, the answers will tend to be less detailed than they were in previous responses, as most people don't want to write a long answer each time. So by pointing them to a really helpful and detailed FAQ, the poster will get a much better answer than they probably would have by getting a "new" response. Then they can further define questions so that the "new" response can be a detailed, customized answer to something that is not a general, broad question that is best answered in the FAQ.

So it is really more of a benefit to the new members to get them to read the FAQs than it is to the "old timers", who can choose to just ignore repetitive posts.

Nanci,

I believe that if you are a Contributing member you can edit your posts.

Something maybe unique to me, but still a problem

I would first love to say thanks to Rich Z for this forum, and the abundance of information that I can access. I can say I agree with the general ideas that came up to make the forum psychically better, but I have something to add about how this site really turned me off, and I feel that this would make the site better if it could change.

I would like to add a little bit, it seems as if the general mood in this forum seems to bother me, but its a great forum. When I first came here I was lectured about my first post that had "OMFG" in it. Now i can see one person telling me that it was bad but... there were so many people giving me a lecture on how some people will be offended by and and such, and some of their comrads even repped one another for lecturing me. That was a VERY bad feeling, I mean if someone scolds you then someone else will join in and pat that other person on the back for it it makes you feel like even more of an idiot. And the lectures didn't stop after that either. I felt that it was a lecture, because it was my FIRST post here ever and everyone was about 20 years older than me. Now, that incident has left such a sour taste in my mouth because throughout the time I've searched here people get into arguments and say "F**king" all the time, and because its okay that they did not spell it out. I didn't spell it out either, and its common internet slang in which I used and it was not directed towards anyone. I feel that because I was a "newbie" that I was lectured as such. Now because I definitely was not the only person to get such a welcome, because I did read about the chatroom incident, and I do see how people who have humongous rep talk.

The chatroom incident is a more extreme case of what I experienced, which is what I've been trying to get at here. A sense of superiority lurks within all these non-newbie members in which their rank, age, and knowledge of the subject makes them better and able to tell people off even when they go against their own general rule that they create. I went in the cornsnake chat room once, there was no corn snake discussion. I saw the incident at the chatroom where people were flaming the kid about asking a question about turtles because "its a corn snake chat" when I myself when in at one hour, while a discussion about alcohol was going on. Far from corn snakes I might add, and now because I see people use the term "F**ing" when they are ranting and they were not lectured on how it may offend people. All I'm saying is the atmosphere here is actually very demeaning and degreading for someone like me.

I usually feel "lesser" than the other because this is my first pet. Now I know that this forum will teach, I would also like to be treated as if I wasn't a total idiot, because thats how I personally came onto this site feeling like. I've been to many other forums and I've had a much softer welcome, and I have enjoyed those forums for such a long time. It seems like this is the forum that unless I'm not breeding, I don't own a collection, and I don't exactly know whats wrong with my snake then I'm lower of a person.

On a positive note I've met alot of nice people on here besides these problems in my eyes. They are very nice, but only if more members could be more patient with someone who isn't as advanced as you. At least, this is my experience.

Quick suggestion, there's lots of Canadians on the Forums and I think it would be cool to have a For Sale section for US, Canadian, and maybe even the UK too!

Some have done this with the contributing forums, but it's not up at the top, y'know? I know that the inclusion of a forum like that would make this site 100% for me, and I wouldn't have to go anywhere else to see for sales in Canada!

w00t!

I think the "General Chit-chat" forum should have a subforum for other snakes, like boas and rats, etc. Because I see so many people showing off their snakes in chitchat. It would also be really cool to add another subforum to the photogallery for other snakes/herps, so that you can go to one place and see all of the animals. Being forced to post pictures of your new ball python in the General Chit-Chat forum just because it's not a corn seems kind of dumb to me. I realize this is a cornsnake forum, but I also know that most of the hobbyists here have more than just corns.

I tihnk that RIch has gone over this saying that for other snakes there is fauna, the only reason people really show them here is to show some of the freinds on this site some other things they keep.

The reason people are showing their "other stuff" in General Chit-Chat is because this is the most active forum- this is where everyone you "know" is. This is the friendliest, most talkative forum. That's why we are all here, isn't it- because we want to talk about our herps, show our friends our amazing pets, and learn from those who have been through it before. If, on some other forum, people won't elaborate- well, we have to go where our friends are.

That being said, I like General Chit-Chat the way it is- I don't think it needs to be splintered.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO????????? :santa: :sidestep:

That's what I've been trying to do?!? I can't get it any closer to the top unfortunately, but maybe if enough people ask Rich about it we can do that! Let's DO IT!!!

Rebecca :)

Yes, it's great that the Canadians and Europeans have their own special places now - just hope they don't start forgetting to keep coming to the REST of the forums, lol!

Ok, here is my 2 Cents.
I think what would help the FAQ would be to place it on a Front page. If Cornsnakes.com opened up to a front page then into the Forums then all the Newbies would first go to that page. This page could be the intro written by Rich, and then have a FAQ page of owning Corn snakes. There is a lot of wealthy information here and that FAQ would be some great Care sheets. I am sure the Newbies would first see this page and use that information. On this front page, it could contain a link to the Forums, FAQ (care Sheets) some advertisers for snakes and supplies? (It’s only an idea and the advertisers could be breeders on this site.

So here is a list of items and links to that are possible for front Welcome page.

1. FAQ (care sheets)
2. Forums
3. Chat
4. Articles (any written by some of the main breeders here)
5. Local Herp Societies and clubs.
6. A link to Advertisers or to the For Sale Thread.
7. Also a link to the BOI.
8. And to the American Cornsnake Registry
9. New Threads
10. Whose online

There are so many possible ideas to post and have listed on the Front page would be so helpful to new and old members alike.
I hope this helps.

I like this site a great deal. I don't mind having to pay 25 dollars a year for the privilege of being able to edit my posts. But I WOULD like it if I could also edit the post titles when necessary.

I would like this site a lot LESS if the veterans who're feeling dissatisfied, disgruntled, whatever they're feeling (don't want to put words in their mouths) left it. So, I hope you don't! We non-veterans benefit and learn a lot from your being around.

I think that in the forums, the FAQ should be the first thing that shows up. Like right now, the New Member Intros are first, and then Husbandry and Basic Care, and so on. I believe that the FAQ should be put above the New Member Intros. If people can find the Member Intro sub-forum, they can find the FAQ's. I also think that better names for FAQ threads would be great.

I also think that an edit button would be nice. Every single forum I've been on has had an edit button. I haven't been on Fauna, and maybe they don't have one, but I've been on a few different forums and I've never seen one with no edit button. I don't see why only Contributing Members should have that liberty. I spell very well, so I rarely use the spell check. When I see a typo in my writing that I haven't noticed, I just go "GRR" because there's no edit button, and typos bug me. A lot. Yes, I'm weird.

I also think being able to use HTML would be nice, too. I don't know if that's a Contributing Member's right, but if it is, I'm not going to say that everyone should have it. I mean, the Contributing Member's have to have some stuff better than us normal people. :grin01: But if it isn't, I don't see a reason why people shouldn't be able to use HTML. You can do a lot of cool stuff with it. I don't know if there's a specific reason why we use the vB codes instead of HTML, so if there is, then someone enlighten me.

I think that the separate chat rooms are nice, but that there should also be a link to the original chat room. I enjoy chatting to some of the people on Fauna.

I would like to see the forum arranged to include some ongoing research projects. Examples follow:

What is the average length/weight of corn snakes? Forum members could voluntarily submit data on their snakes monthly with the results to be posted in a graph tracking length/weight by age/gender.

Average size of clutches.

Hatchling mortality rates.

Market demographics. owners by gender, age, number of snakes owned, etc.

I would also like to see more info on shows/expos to include number of vendors, variety of exhibits.

hmmm

the set up and operation of the site are great. Slight changes here and there are easy to get used to.
So, I do not see a lot needed to actually improve the SITE itself. I will have to think about that as I type.
What does need to be fixed is the abundance of people here who think this site is their own.
There are a growing number of people who jump on other posters as if they own this site and not Rich. They spend more time bitching about how everyone else is using the forum then they do discussing cornsnakes.
If a person is NOT a moderator they need to quit acting like they are.
If someone posts in the wrong category or maybe gets a little off topic you don't need ten arrogant responses telling them how bad they are and how stupid they must be to not know the rules of the forum.
A simple response by one person reminding them of their mistake is sufficient.
Sometimes even that isn't needed. As people get used to the site the figure these things out. It does not take two pages of condemnation.
And it sure doesn't take ten people telling each other how wonderfull they are for jumping in someone's case
This site has some of the most knowledgable people in the corn snake world but unfortunately it also has some of the rudest people I have ever seen in the corn snake world.
Of course a lot of people will be upset and just sure I am singling THEM out, a few will be right but this obviously isn't meant for everyone on this forum. Not even close. There are more good people then bad, no doubt about it. There are a lot of people here that are very helpful, polite, humorous, knowledgable and respectful. People you can tell you would enjoy spending time with any any setting.
Unfortunately it's just that the rudest are usually the "loudest" and most prolific posters.
well, there, I said it........so let 'er rip, I'm ready to be blasted for my propensity to step on toes.

Oh yeah, why not a section for newbie question? instead of New Member Introduction how about New Member Introduction and Questions
It doesn't neccessarily need to be a FAQ section just a place where new members can ask "newbie" questions.
I know there are plenty of people who would be willing to help and for those who get annoyed at newbie, lazy or redundant questions, it's simple... don't go there, don't read the questions and don't blast the ones who ask them.

oh well here goes......submit reply

Yeah, definitly want Rich hosted Canadian For Sale Forums, because we've got three different Canadian forums down there all of them trying to be *the* canadian forums for everyone. One doesn't want selling of non Canadian raised snakes, the other will let any canadians display a for sale add but is called "stupid" and "pointless" because canadians have another forum for discussion.

I beg of you Rich.
