Controversial Topic inspired by ‘Chat room - listen up, please’

Hi All :wavey:

These last few days I have been reading the “Chat room’ thread and something about posting with “no contribution” was talked about and I am interested to know your views.

Is posting a lot of pictures of your snake:
a - Attention seeking
b - Complement seeking
c - Just being proud of your snake
d - Something else

My views are that if you enjoy looking at your snakes and other people’s snake, why not post as many nice photos as you feel like?
I agree that it is always nice to hear that people think your snake(s) is/are beautiful and get comments but for me it is just to give to others what they give me and that is what I call “eye candy”.
The pleasure of looking at different morphs / colours / sizes and nothing else.

Thanks for letting me know how you feel about it :D

I must admit I was a bit surprised to read the 'no contribution' theme. It made me wonder if all my 'lovely snake' posts were seen in a negative way. Likewise, yes I am proud of, and post pictures of, my snakes. I have never been called an 'attention w...' to my face, but maybe have been regarded as one then?
Maybe people who are more competative are worried about other people's rep points and post counts? (Perhaps people are more negative if some envy or jealousy is involved?) Personally I don't give a hoot if a has more than b or more than me in a shorter space of time, and actually have been quite disgusted when such matters were also a bone of contention on here.
So I think for me it's c, I am proud of my snakes, but that might not be how others perceive it.

I post photos of my snakes for a number of reasons:

1. To provide comparisons for people with the same morphs/types.

2. To show the development of snakes in my collection.

3. To show off my cool snakes. Positive replies help validate the hard work I've put into raising them.

4. To have a body of photos of my snakes that I can access from any PC.

So in a way, it's a combination of your options a, b, and c plus a few other things. :)

Great topic btw.
I've posted very few pics because I don't have a camera right now - but I can't wait to show y'all my babies when I get one.
I LOVE to see pics of peoples corns, especially progression pics. It is both entertaining and educational. Its also part of community bonding IMHO. I don't know whats been brought up in chat, but whats the issue of whether someone is a contributer or not, etc? I mean if you're posting to sell, then you have to be a contributer anyway right? But like I said, I don't know what the chat discussion's really been about.
I intend on contributing once I can afford it, but with most community forums you really don't have to, which is good. How can you spread a love of corns, and their proper care, etc, without a good free community where you can see other peoples pets and prob's visually, and post your own. Lets face it, this is the best corn forum there is. Hooray for cornsnakes.com and posting pics!

I was also surprised and this is why I have done this thread and do not regard photos as being 'no contribution' as to me it is just great to see other people's snakes and see their progress ( like your Lil ;) )

You forgot to mention that you want us drooling in front of your great collection and jealous of your new / future acquisitions.... you got that from me, that is for sure!

For me it's mostly C, but a tad of B too because I'd be a little upset if my snake's picture didn't get one single "nice snake" reply.
If other peoples posts are mostly pictures it makes me think they're proud, not attention or complement seeking.

Kimberley, what I meant quoting "no contribution" was not moneywise but suggestions, help to people asking questions, etc... but in mainly posting pics of your snakes but your reply is right on topic ;)

It is only human to appreciate / want some comments ;)

After what you went through for your lil, you are a snake-goddess. You can do no wrong. All pics are extra welcome.

Personally I post photo's of my snakes simply because I LOVE photography, therfore am pleased with the shots that I have to offer of the snakes.

Also I LOVE my snakes and am VERY proud of them, therfore enjoy sharing photo's of them with everyone here on cornsnakes.com because last I checked everyone here has an equal obsession of Corns as I do.

I used to post 1 thread with several different photos of some of my different snakes, however I figure if one were to do a search on a particular morph so they could choose what they'd like to get or just have a passion for that particular morph, that it is best to post seperate threads for each morph of snake that I post photo's of.

my 2 cents

It is the exact same way with me. When I first began getting into corns, I spent countless hours in the photo gallery searching for examples of all the morphs, attempting to find what interested me most. While doing these searches, I would perform advanced searches, seeking out threads posted by the users that I know had the best photo's.

Since then, my collection has grown and I have made a point of trying to post threads in the photo gallery that if one were to do an advanced search on my username for photo's there, they would have a well constructed catalog of the morphs i own.

I also admit, that I do enjoy positive feedback and questions from the people who browse the photo gallery. Whether it is just a 'cool snake' comment, or a 2 paragraph insight on the photo's subject matter, it is just nice to know that someone has taken a look and was impressed by the corn.

I put alot of work and dedicate alot of time to caring for my corns and I don't get alot of positive feedback from the people I live with and see on a daily basis. Naturally, I look to this forum for that feedback, because this is a group of people who have an appreciation for cornsnakes. That is why I love it here

I post pics every chance I get because I'm proud of my snake and I want to show him off.

For me it's nice to throw some pics out there and have people reply and say beautiful snake. All I hear at home is "eeww, put it back in it's cage so I don't have to look at it".

There were people in the chat room being critical of people posting photos in the photo gallery? I think some people are running out of things to complain about. Who cares why people do it? Personally, I enjoy looking at other peoples photos, and I think there is some degree of attention seeking in all levels of contribution to a forum. Why post if you are not looking for a response?

The no-contribution comments actually felt a little bit of a slap in the face. So, I'm not an expert, a breeder, a known player in the cornsnake world. I haven't got any high-end or genetically valuable snakes, so maybe I should just get my coat and go?
No point in telling someone that their snake looks pretty, that their set-up looks good, that their snakes are healthy and growing well?
In this case I'm happy to be a pointless non-contributing member, hurrah for newbs and amateurs!

Oh Sean, now I'm blushing! The REAL snake-goddess is Kathy, who kindly replied to my cry for help e-mail before I even knew this site existed!

Great point, Matt.

Seriously, these people logged into a CORNSNAKE enthusiast website and then complained that too many CORNSNAKE PHOTOS were posted in the CORNSNAKE PHOTO GALLERY?! :shrugs: I'm at a loss.

Janine, don't you DARE put your coat on and leave.... I'll find out where you have gone to and will bring you straight back by the ear!
Your comments, humour and dedication to your snakes would be well missed.
