Daytona 2009

Haha! I was thinking more of Scarlett - with the green draperies made into a dress, Ah DO declare!!

So, what does anyone think about the annual memorial award? I would be willing to check out some inscribed plaque / trophy type things, since we have done it before for photo contests that Bill was in charge of. I could let everyone know what is available and how much it would cost, and then it could come out of the raffle money. I did tell people who contacted me about donations that a small amount of the money would go towards minor expenses, and that most of it would go to US ARK. And I would tell them that again before they actually give me anything.

There is not a lot of time to do this, so a decision has to be made pretty quickly. We are not talking about a lot of money - maybe $50, give or take some? Not really sure - it has been a couple of years since we had to have something like this made.

Please weigh in so we can either do it, or shelve it, at least for this year.

I have just received a very generous donation...

of $110 from Dave Partington (davesfiles) for the purchase of the first annual H. Bernard Bechtel Memorial Award for ________? (what do we want to call it?) Any money left over after purchase will go with the rest of the raffle money to be donated to US ARK.

I will be going to a trophy shop tomorrow to see what plaque / trophy, etc, will best suit our needs. I need some input on what to name the award, and what wording to use. Let's look over any awards we have sitting around, and make some suggestions. I sure hope we can convince Rich to come and accept it - would seem like an anti climax if he doesn't. Maybe we should check with him first, before inscribing it.

Award for the Advancement of Herpetoculture. :D

Since Dr. Bechtel was a pioneer in morphs and genetics regarding cornsnakes and many other snakes, he helped advance herp keeping as a hobby.

WOW! Thank you VERY MUCH Dave! This is extremely kind and generous of you!

I am at a loss as to what it should say though...

Next question is how do we convince Rich to stop by? I know he won't have dinner with us and has been non-committal about stopping over for the raffles and such. I think this would be so much better as a surprise for him, but how do we convince him without telling him about it?

Thanks Robbie!

Do you think it should be as general as "herpetoculture" when we are all corn fans meeting at a cornsnake dinner? At least the first few awards are likely to be for corn projects. Of course, we may eventually run out of those, and want to include others (but will have to convince them to come to a corn dinner to accept, lol!) Maybe "corns" would be too restrictive. Or maybe genetics or morphs should be part of it - that was his passion. So we need to figure out just what we want to encompass.

Put on your thinking caps everyone! We need lots of input so we have multiple ideas to choose from!

Maybe tell Connie and have her convince him?

I was thinking the same thing!

But this time of year he probably has more important things to do than read 60 page threads.

But I just realized that I probably have no way to contact Connie except through Rich. I don't know if she has a separate email or cell phone, etc.

Thanks Robbie!

:shrugs: I thought it would be fun for it to be more of a broad spectrum award. And we all know that there's many people on here that keep more than just corns. It gives it a way to be all inclusive, and thus give us many more selection choices down the road without having to change the name of the award.

A few key phrases which might help out or get tossed around... it would be centered text on the finished item...

The wording on an award needs to be dynamic, to the point, not too wordy...I'd presume there's a speech (2-5 minutes) leading up to the presentation of said award, during which all of the information which couldn't fit on the award is revealed...to give the audience a broader knowledge of the recepients actions which have led to the moment.
;D

"...I'd presume there's a speech (2-5 minutes) leading up to the presentation of said award.."

OH NO! Hadn't even thought that far! Since Katie is the organizer, she should have the "honor" of presentation speaker, lol!

Aw gee - thanks Kathy! LMAO. Public speaking is not one of my strong points. I want to get everyone involved so maybe Robbie can do it? Or Joe...yeah, Joe would be a good candidate (he is going to KILL me for suggesting him!).

A member has just let me know that they have Connie's cell phone #, and can call her to relay a message about the award, if we like.
