Daytona 2009

I am thinking of inviting Bette Bechtel (Dr. Bechtel's wife) to our dinner. She probably won't come - probably won't feel up to it. But if she did, what could we do to make it worthwhile, to honor Dr. Bechtel? It wouldn't have to be A LOT, or take a long time. But just something symbolic to let her know how much we all appreciate his contributions to our hobby.

What do you all think of this?

I think it would be wonderful Kathy if she wanted to stop by. But honestly, I really don't know what we could do. I know we talked about a card and a moment of silence - but beyond that...I am not good at coming up with this kind of stuff....

Oooohhh... wait, maybe we could come up with an "award" in Dr. Bechtel's name to give out to someone for doing the most good for the industry/hobby? I don't know how we would decide who gets it....almost like we would need a "governing body" for our GTG to do that...I don't know, just talking out loud here...

Those sound like good ideas!

Maybe they will stimulate some other members to come up with some ideas, too.

I'm up for it but I'm with Katie...not sure what we could do but I do like her idea about an award in his honor, etc...

Did you know...

that the IHS already gives out a memorial award for Joseph Laszlo every year? Read more about it here (for ideas):
http://www.kingsnake.com/ihs/laszlo.html

It could just be an inscribed award from a trophy shop or "Things Remembered" - nothing fancy or expensive. It would be a fitting honor for him! But how would we decide each year, and who would decide? Maybe have a discussion thread for a few weeks, and then everyone who has paid for a dinner ticket can vote? Would it have to be for somebody attending the dinner? Lots of questions needing discussion!

Hi,
I have some questions about Daytona 2009, and the USARK dinner.
If I decide to come to it, what is considered appropriate attire?
Is a proper full length suit appropriate?
Should I wear ruby studded gold cuff links, or will I be considered acceptable with less? Is a fashion ring appropriate, and if so, how many carats of precious gemstone is appropriate?
If I choose to bring a guest, how much of a dress should she wear? I mean, like, having never been to one of these gala events before, is an evening gown appropriate, or is the dress code less strict? Perhaps a simple skirt?
Should I not wear any finger adornments, so as to look eligible, in case one of the other great houses of Corns is available/ aka/ is it better to look like I'm available to another great house of Corns, to seal a deal towards a well paired breeding project, or perhaps more?
Will there be raffle tickets at the door? How many is an appropriate number to purchase? If my number is pulled, do I get to pick my own prize, or is the prize pre-chosen before winning numbers are drawn?
In the case that high ticket style items are donated (those which would appeal to lots of persons, with typically high dollar values), will there be a Silent Auction during the dinner , prior to the raffle tickets being drawn?
Will there be a 50/50 drawing raffle, in which, for example, tickets are sold for a dollar each. 500 tickets are sold. the ticket winner receives 50% 0f the $500, the remaining ($250) goes to USARK. Of course, ettiquette dictates the that raffle winner donate back the most of their winnings, but it's all in fun for a good cause.
Please forgive me for these inquiries, all in one posting, but I couldn't bring myself to scroll thru 57 pages to find the answers.
Warmest Regards,
dave

Yeah, a board of trustees would be nice but that can get very complicated. Then again, if this was an annual thing and we had an annual award, that could be real fun. We could always form some sort of committee that involved some of the individuals that have been to the past dinners. We could do the nominate/election thing but time is running out. Maybe this year we need a dictator? ;)

I think an award would be great. Maybe would could tell Bette Bechtel in a card or something so she doesn't have to sit through the big dinner and prizes. It would be neat if she came, but there may not be much for her to do and it might be stressful so soon after her husband's death. However, if we did an award in his honor and took pictures and signed a card, etc....that might really be nice. I've never met her or Dr. Bechtel so I think deferring to Kathy's notion is probably best since she knows more details.

Anywho, if we are nominating for an award, I'd have to throw Rich Z's hat in the ring since this will be his last year and I think many of us would agree he has brought the cornsnake hobby pretty far himself. We are, after all, on his cornsnake forum talking about all of this. Of course, I'd nominate Kathy too but she isn't retiring so I can wait until next year for her nomination. ;)

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I would want to nominate Chuck Pritzel for his ACR, and the Morph Guides. But because Rich is retiring this year, it does seem present a coincidence with the beginning of the first annual award. Hopefully, Chuck (and the rest of us) will still be doing it next year.

This would have been my first nominee as well. I already thought we should do something nice for Rich this year, but didn't know what we could do. I think it was briefly discussed but didn't really go anywhere.

Dave - in response to your post...
Dinner is casual. Shorts and tshirts will I imagine be what the majority of people will be wearing. Nothing fancy by any means...

The raffle is set up so that each prize will have an individual "bucket" for tickets. You can buy your tickets and enter in only the raffles you are interested in winning. Tickets will be $1 a piece with no minimum/maximum required to buy.
There had been a bit of discussion about doing it other ways, but overall we decided that this would be the best way to run it this year.

As far as "dress code", I would imagine most people will come in their colorful herp t shirts, and shorts or jeans, and probably some will wear the special "cornsnake dinner" shirts - order soon if you want one! If you want to wear a suit and tie, you certainly may, but you probably will be the only one. As far as my own opinion, wear whatever you want, as long as it is legal (probably thong swimming suits are not a good idea, though - the A/c will be cranking!)

I don't think we planned any 50/50 raffle, or silent auction. And I believe that tickets will be available at the event. But I will let Katie answer those questions, since she has done the work of organizing this, and has kept up on it the best (unless somebody else has perfect recall, and can remember everything since page 1).

Kathy, you were supposed to tell Dave that a dress or simple skirt was mandatory for him! ;)

I can't WAIT for this big shindig!

"Kathy, you were supposed to tell Dave that a dress or simple skirt was mandatory for him!"

If we told him THAT, then can you IMAGINE how Robbie would dress for the event, lol???

LadyAngel, thanks. I have a tad of fundraising memories in my background. Vegas Nights can be popular too, when this annual usark fundraiser becomes an annual event. I assume non-cornsnakers come to this too? haven't looked on the usual places, been busy, suddenly got 73 snakes. In cluding and it'd be a chia skirt, luvs...

We don't have too many non-cornsnake people that come, but occasionally there are a few. They are usually into other reptiles at least.

That is one gorgeous corn! I'll buy a couple of raffle tickets for it, lol!

Some of the donations for the raffle are going to be ball pythons or other non-corns. And most corn keepers also have SOME kind of non corn herps, so it will be interesting for those who like other animals. But most of the discussion will be cornsnake related, so might be boring for somebody who has zero interest in corns. But as far as the raffle goes, since it is trying to raise as much as possible for US ARK, the more ticket buyers, the better. And we have already discussed the distinct possibility that we may change the format of the dinner, discussions, and / or raffles for next year, and the years after that. This is the "trial" run so that we can decide what to improve for the future.
