HATERS ON SNAKES !

bambam1313

animal lover :)
i have to do a bit of venting of my own .. after readnig a few other forum sites about snakes and the experince i have had a few times !

People who are soo scared off snakes or reptiles of that matter .. Some people, yes its metally possible due to a phobia but others are just plain STUPID in my words ! MY friend just almost killed my corn snake cuz it was tooo close to her ( other side of the room)
yes when i was a kid i loved him but looked at them from afar cuz i seen my friends father get bitten by a 6ft boa lol . wasn't pretty when he had to pry it off his arm .. pretty gross .. since then i gotta say they grown on me .. pretty funny eh !

Also Like the type that has phobias of them and simply avoids them without bugging snake owners i don't mind that but when they constially bi**ch at you for owning such *satans animals* and things like that GET REAL!
Half of my family and friends and boyfriends family i can't stand because everytime im around all they do is yell at me calling me crazy, stupid and everything else plus calling my parents to the dirt because they allow me to have them ! its not fit at all .. Also to be told they would come kill them if i ever got pregant with a child because the snake would kill him .. a corn snake would actually die trying to eat a baby .. let alone a full grown person .. and people think im crazy but come on now, I think people who have like 15 cats or more and their house smells like urine and everything else are more crazy than I am!!

Snakes are such beautiful reptiles and neat to own, i love my snakes and i will still be getting more ! :D

Too all the snake haters :

"CORN SNAKES ARE TOO SMALL AND WILL DIE TRYING TO EAT YOU, and ALSO STAY OUTTA MY LIFE WITH MY SNAKES, they are MINE and in the SAFETY of MY house !"

The problem is the general public doesn't know too much about snakes beside the freak accidents on the news and hollywood movies. People hate things they are afraid of and people are afraid of what they aren't educated about.

There's some rumor going around that all snakes with vertical pupils are venomous. Somebody actually told me this in a conversation.

I would have told em that if they did I would be pressing charges for Trespassing and destruction of property if they did and that I would be sue them for pain and suffering and the cost of the animals. No one has the right to threaten you to come in your home and kill or destroy your personal property which is what those snakes are.

^^^^ What he said!
And maybe it's time to find another girlfriend....who would want to marry into THAT???

The whole "snakes with vertical slits in their eyes are venemous" is repeated a lot on "Billy the Exterminator". Guess my sand boa could kill me according to that rule eh? Funny. I'm not too concerned.

It seems from the one sided view of this conversation that they are not people who are willing to be educated. Which is very sad. So willing to stay caged in their box of how they believe the world should be. Very sad. Maybe you should tell them "that which you fear, controls you." Because its true.

I think the whole vertical slits thing that is repeated on many exterminator shows, because indigenous venomous snakes in the US have vertical pupils except for the coral snake. So for the most part, if you live in the US and you come across a snake that has vertical slit pupils in the wild, avoiding it is a good idea. However getting close enough to examine their pupils probably isn't a good idea.

This obviously doesn't work for snakes from other parts of the world. Boas have slits and cobras have round pupils, so it is often the opposite.

Before I got Ares, my first corn snake, in august of last year, I was scared to death of snakes in general. It was the fear of being bitten and how they looked that scared me the most.

After I took in Ares because he needed a home... my fear/phobia of snakes went very quickly.

Most people that are afraid of snakes just haven't been educated on what snakes are dangerous and truly venomous and what snakes aren't.

It's the fear of what they don't understand that gets them. Ignorance can truly make people miss out.... it was for me until I learned more about snakes.

I used to have a 7 inch Pacu, many people believe they only eat plants... wrong, If he would have thought my fingers were hot dogs, he would have tried to take a bite out of them... Luckily he was too scared of my hands while cleaning the algae off the sides of the tank(he devoured every other fish in there, including the catfish and the Pleco.)
It is amazing what people believe about animals, when they themselves never looked up the information, just believe what they have been told.

That's a good point. It's probably a good idea to leave any strange snake alone though. Especially stupid people.

Haha funny thing is I just bought a leopard gecko. And its eyes are vertical lol, my friend said it today to me .. And turned around and said eww they will kill u and I laughed my ass off , she was like what billy the extermator said it on its show ! Hahahahaha ! To funny

While at work i was told by a lady that, "The only good snake is a dead snake." If there had been no other customers waiting in line, I would have gone ballistic on her and probably lost my job....lol

Most of my friends used to be really scared of snakes. Myself included.

Bring your corns to schools, or to work, or to a public park or something. Educate!! I recently turned a snake-phobic woman to a snake lover!! She grew up in Taiwan, where they have MANY dangerous venomous snakes. To get her to hold my corn snake was revolutionary!!

My corn has never met a person that didn't like her in the end. Or at least got less scared of snakes. Education is the key!

Most definitely, I plan on doing lots of educational stuff. In fact, this semester I have to teach a class. I am trying to get myself placed in a science class, so I can teach about the basic genetics of corn snakes. I will be taking my corns with me and showing the kids, letting them pet Gypsy if they want, and informing them that not all snakes are venomous or aggressive.

I probably would have just said (in a very polite tone of voice) "What a terribly uneducated thing to say."

I kno, our summers get between 18 and 34 degrees c, I worry about bring my animals anywhere, my friends mother what's me to bring me corn,bp and my leopard gecko to her daughters sons birthday cuz they got bearded drangons and iguna and scorpion, and she had someone with snakes but when she had a meeting with buddy his boa stricked at her neck and she just left !

It is hard for me to speak in a polite tone. I try, but I thought it better not to say anything at the moment. I was having one of my "everything sets me off" days, and if I would have said something, it would not have helped my cause. I just told her that "I have 5 snakes, they are fascinating animals" and she backed off from the conversation. I did however educate a lady a while back about them, she told me that she did not mind them, she just had a religious aversion to them. I let her know that there are legless lizards, and that made her start to think about what the "serpent" in the bible really could have been...lol I also let her know how important they are to our ecosystem, and how in NM since we have Hantavirus and Plague, snakes are literally the last line of defense between us and a bad day.
