How do we get the temp up?

Yes, and someone along the line told me that "belly" temp (ie the temperature of the heat mat) is much more important then the ambient air temp.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Whats much more important is the reptiles internal body temperature ;)

Whether thats derived from belly heat (UTH) or a heat lamp raising ambient air temps, as long as your providing the right temp gradient, who cares :spinner:
 
As was stated the thickness of the substrate and the fact that it looks like wood pellets might be a big part of the problem a small amount of aspen works well maybe only an inch or so thick. Try pushing the thermometer probe through the substrate to the glass right over the UTH
 
Have you actually tried putting the probe for the thermometer UNDER the substrate just over the UTH and got a reading there?
