How to make a black cornsnake........

I understood your sarcasim Wade.. Fair enough, I know what irritated me the most was when someone thought it must be approiate to keep going busting chops to Jay's understandable objection..

I find it interesting that of the few complaints I have heard, Jay, Chris (tyflyer), Tim, and VickyChea, None of the complainers are black. I wonder what that means.

Much to the dismay of others, I do have an intresting family tree to say the least. I have Black, Hispanic and Asian blood cousins, along with First Nations and tid bits of other minoritys mixed into the family tree.. I have no idea what your trying to point to Wade.. Believe me, I am not free from making off the cuff remarks, but I tend to respect a person when they make mention it might be a sore point or bothersome to them.. *shrugs*

Jay,
Hi, hey thanks for the words of encouragement. Lav. is a nice choice, hadn't thought of it. well, i guess, i'll need a lav. het anery or het char. line breeding seems inevitable ....but like i said...i got 50 yrs or so to burn...and when your not looking to make money from the results of these "experimental" pairings...it tends to take on a more carefree feel...no pressure....i like that. the resulting babies...will be offered via internet, local pet stores (i've already got a few shops willing buy my "unwanted" babies..the ones that just dont measure up...) so let the games begin......

Hey Tim, I don’t mean to bust anyone’s chops. The only point I was trying to make was that the comment was not derogatory or meant to demean anyone. I knew a little about your ethnic background and I know several others here with similar backgrounds. I didn’t think you or they would be offended. I think we are all a little too sensitive about being politically correct. I think it is ok to admit to the world that black people are black. I'm 50% Swede. Not necessarily ashamed of it, not necessarily proud of it. I just am. It doesn’t hurt my feelings when people make Swedish jokes. Why should it? Maybe if we were all a little more excepting of minorities we could admit to each other that there are minorities.

I’m letting this discussion go a lot further than it should because to me this is an important point. I could have just told Jay I was sorry and delete the post. But if I had that would have implied that there was something wrong with it. I think people should be offended when people talk down to them or talk to them in a derogatory way. I don’t think that is what has happened here. Who was offended here and why? What was offensive? Really? What was in that comment that was demeaning to someone?

I want to throw my two cents in on an all black corn. When you look at most aneries and charcoals you notice that the background is much lighter than the saddles. So I think that Banded motley is the way to go. Just line breed to have the best banded affect with the bands as close together as possible. Now personally I dont know if Black boarders are inside the saddle or outside so I dont know if breeding for large boarders would really work into getting the saddles closer together or not. And I think with this you could use any real dark Anery, Charcoal, Lavender or combination of them all.

Good point about the background, I have debated about making an all black corn for a while. One thing to remember is that the Motley, stripe & diffused genes remove all patterning on the belly and significantly lighten it. Also if you add the Anery A in there you will get unwanted carotenoid retention- producing the yellowing affect that brightens as the snake gets older. It is easy to produce a snake with a 'lack' of pigmentation just because you are essentially turning off what already exists. Creating what doesn't yet exist is much more difficult. Anything short of coming up with a new morph or selectively breeding for the next 30 years would make a dark snake but not produce the over all glossy black. I guess more then anything, I would be at a loss at how to make that belly black.

LOL, well actually my favorite would have to be the Mexican Black Kingsnake. But thats a whole different forum....
Haha, the Mexican Black Kingsnake is a stunner! But if we’re talking about the Black Corn Snake, they’ve got their charm too. While they don’t have that deep, glossy black like the kingsnake, Black Corn Snakes have this cool, dark, almost charcoal look that makes them stand out in their way. Plus, they’re just as easy to care for and have that classic corn snake personality—curious, gentle, and great for handling. So yeah, different forum, but both are awesome in their own right!
