Kenyan Sand Boa?

Alaya

Crazy Alaskan
http://fairbanks.craigslist.org/for/2617470999.html

Really interesting snake I found on craigslist today, and was wondering if anyone had more information. I am really seriously considering getting her (ad says male, but its so large it must be a female) but want to know if I am getting over my head. I wasn't planning to take the tank, its too big, and I don't have the room for it. I do have an extra place for a nice 20L tank or a bin. From what I read the warm side needs to be 90-95F. Do they eat f/t well? I have a history having wonderful pet rodents, and don't want to own a snake that I will likely need to feed live to. I sent an email to the owner asking if it is currently eating f/t or live.

Anything else I should know? Good websites to look at?

It will depend on the individual snake...whether he/she has had live it's whole life...but every KSB I have every had or seen were excellent eaters, and wouldn't hesitate no matter what was in front of them food wise. Warm side around 92 or so is good...super easy to keep...small water dish so you don't raise the humidity too much, aspen bedding. That's it. I mean heat, and thermometer and all that jazz, but they don't require much to be happy.

Appears to be a big gal from the pics...doesn't need that large of a tank lol...I would definitely suggest a tub, because you really aren't going to see her too much lol. I mean, mine always came out at night to snoop around, but during the day they were chillin' under their aspen. Feed her once every 2 weeks at that size...

If you need anything else, let me know...I am good friends with one of the best KSB Breeder's in the country... :)

Infact...if you are looking at spending that much...save some money, and get this excellent specimen shipped to you from Jason Hess at Jasons-jungle.com.
He seems to have alot of either normals, anery's or het anery's available right now. You could get a pair shipped to you for around $120. Or you could mix and match...get a normal and an anery or an anery and a het anery....he is absolutely great to work with! Tell him Josh from up in Greenfield sent you, and he should work with you a bit on price :)
I need to get off his website before I go off and want to buy some....lol

Long story short, the owner of the sand boa is a moron and wouldn't let me get it because she didn't want it to be "shoved in a little plastic box and fed f/t" like I was some horrible abusive person. I wasn't willing to pay $250 for it, I was hoping to talk her down since i only wanted the snake and not the tank. The snake is probably stressed from the loud, open, exposed tank and i doubt with that deep of bedding the owner is keeping it warm enough. No wonder it will only eat live (though I doubt they really tried f/t). She insisted it was male, but I don't believe her one bit. Really broke my heart, I was so looking forward to the snake, had really set my mind on it.

Those Anery sand boas are amazing though. I am really tempted. But what I have wanted for years is an axanthic hognose (originally just a hognose, but i have a huge soft spot for black and white snakes). He doesn't have those, but he does have pair that are het for them! I'm so tempted. A true axanthic is way out of my price range.

Coming from a fellow alaskan, I have been quoted shipping prices and expect to pay around $70 for shipping alone.

Also if your looking for Hognose, there is a lady in Chugiak that breeds them. I dont know if she has any Anery ones but I have seen her adds on local ANchorage craigs list and she has a web site www.alaskareptiles.com but from what I have seen she doesnt update it much.

Good to see another Alaskan on here :D Welcome to the site!

Hi Allalaskan

I've shipped a cornsnake and feedermice from texas overnight recently (two separate shipments) and $70 was what I paid for shipping each, averaged out. I really don't consider it that bad, but then again I'm a born and raised Alaskan and remember when all the grocery stores had for fruit was a few sad looking apples (only the red and green ones, no good ones) and completely green bananas. I also lived out in the bush, and love the cheapness of Fairbanks after that. The feeder mice were actually cheaper than the stuff at petco, even after I calculated in shipping, and definitely way higher quality. I'm happy to pay the shipping if I get a quality snake(s) out of it.

The breeder in chugiak looks good, but doesn't have any hognose or sand boas available for another year. I may ask her about picking up a load of feeder mice next time I drive that direction. My corn has a years supply of mice in the freezer, but if I get a sand boa or two I will need more food. If I had only gotten the sand boa before I ordered mice I could have saved myself a lot on shipping!

I'm falling more in love with Jason's anery sand boa's, though from his website it looks like he only has males available. I wonder if he has a normal female that is het anery, I don't like the look of the stripe ones. I'm falling more and more in love with them, and did just get my pfd check (oil money paid out as a check to all alaskans), plenty to pay for two snakes and a years supply of food, shipped.

Thats cool, I wasnt sure if you knew what the shipping costs were and just thought I would let you know.

The next snake I get will most likely be shipped up. I really want to get a Amazon Tree Boa but I think im going to wait a while before I do.

I know if you want high grade stuff especially animals you almost always have to order out of state up here :( If you dont mind me asking what were the prices after shipping for your mice and which compony did you use?

I used Big Cheese Factory, and was very happy with them. Their mice are obviously well taken care of, all the fur is bright, bright white so they are in clean cages. The packages are vacuum sealed and will last at least a year in the freezer. I had a thread recently about other companies and how much they charged for shipping up here. Big Cheese charged me $75 for shipping (50 for normal shipping + 25 for alaska fee) and I bought about $75 worth of mice. Came out to about $0.60 for each mouse if I remember right, I mostly ordered small things, like pinks and fuzzies. There was still lots of dry ice in the box, and it the mice were frozen harder than rocks when they got here. I was impressed. I talked to the owner on the phone, they are really nice. I will definitely order from them again.

Give Jason a call, sometimes he has things that aren't listed.. ;)
He also breeds and has a pair of normal Hog's available right now...I think he's asking $110 for the pair...but you could probably get him down to like $90 for the pair + your shipping...not a bad deal!

He didn't have any hognose last year, so I got mine from a different vendor, but he was a nice guy and answered a lot of my questions.

He doesn't have the axanthic hognose, which is what I really want. I think I'll wait a few years (or a decade) for the prices to come down. His babies are possibly het for it, but it would take forever to prove and find. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with 4 new snakes? The boyfriend would probably think I'm nuts if I did that. And poor...

I did email him. My preference right now is a male anery sand boa and a female het anery sand boa, a 2010 if possible. My phone can't make long distance calls so I will impatiently be waiting for a reply to the email.

Two days and no email response yet :(. I'm sure it will come, but I'm sitting here excited and then disappointed by every email that comes through.

Thanks Hoosier. Still another day and no reply :( I'm sure he's just busy and will get back to me soon.

I sold all of my sandies to my son inlaw. I know he has what you want available. Send me a pm if you're still looking.

Yay, email back :) I'm excited, think I'm going to get an anery and a het anery that is bright orange. I'm really excited. Part of me wants to get a pair of hognose too, and set up a rack, but I think that would mean I'm getting over my head, and that is a poor idea. I think I need to go and find some more tanks. I was going to use the 6 quart shoeboxes at first, but I find it easier to control the heat in the tank. It wouldn't be such a big deal, but it gets forty below zero up here for much of the winter (its snowing today) so I feel safer having the snake it something that is easier to keep at the right temperature.

And thanks Tom, but I'll probably order from Jason.

Glad he got back with you, he is a great guy to deal with...and he's only about 40 min. from my house so whenever I feel like expanding my collection, I don't have to pay shipping! Lol

Grats, and make sure you post pics when you get them!

40 mins away from me would be..... Nothing. Literally nothing. Miles and miles and miles of wilderness. The next town over is really Anchorage, or the Valley area, and its 350 miles. The next city? Calgary or Seattle, about 2000 miles (or 48 hours of driving). I love it at times, hate it at others.
