Metal in a mouse...My Poor Festivus

But it feels like I'm giving up on him....

Oh Beth, please try not to feel that way. You've gone above and beyond in your love and care for this poor baby. You did everything you possibly did for him, and if this is the end, try to take comfort in the fact that his suffering is over and he was safe and loved by a wonderful owner until the very end. God Speed, little Festivus.

The thing is, nothing feels like the "right" thing to do.....
There is no clear solution ...

I'm thinking of offering him a pinky before he has his drink tonight (while he's thirsty) and then soaking him. He seemed to feel a little better after his soak last night....

In your situation, I am not sure if there is an absolute "right" thing to do. You have to adapt the care to meet the situation. But, I think your plan may be the best thing you can do.

Beth... I can't offer you any different words that have been spoken... just know that you're both in my thoughts, hopes and prayers.

Crap Beth. I have nothing different to offer either. I know you have done it all. This just sucks!!

I'm very sorry. I do hope he takes the pinky and starts back on his way to recovery.
Hugs and best wishes to you both!

Oh Beth, I'm so sorry. Others have said it well, and I know your heart is breaking. You've been a wonderful caretaker for Festivus, and done all that could be done. I don't have any words of wisdom; I just have love and prayers for you.

No Tom, he didn't.

I could take him to small claims court, and win. I talked it over with my husband but he talked me out of that route. I have known the guy 13 years, and it wasn't intentional. My husband reminded me that because the supplier delivers right at my work anytime I call him that in time and money he's probably saved me more than the vet bills and the cost of another sulphur. But when Festivus passes away, I will call him and let him know, and hopefully he will help me out a little....

I checked him when I got home. His body is in a circle shape, and he's unresponsive. After I finish the dishes I will offer him a wet pinky, which I'm not expecting him to take, then give him a warm soak. It seemed to make him feel better last night.....

Thank you everyone for all your thoughts and prayers. As horrible as this past month has been, I want you all to know it really helps....

(((((Lori)))))

I have contacted Rob at Bayou. He has a few 08 male sulphurs. I requested one that is related to Festy, if possible. I can't do anything until Festy passes without incurring the wrath of the non snake loving husband...but...

And I'm fighting tears again.

He went blue 3 weeks ago, and cleared up 9 days ago...but no shed

A couple years ago, one of my male snakes went through an illness (possible injury though there didn't seem to be the typical signs pointing toward that).
After onset, and treatment, he went into blue, cleared, and did not shed though it looked like he was more than ready to. It seemed like he just could not shed.
I soaked him and when the skin, finally, loosened enough ... I, very carefully, shed him out myself (removing his old skin). The next few sheds were really terrible too. However, his shedding went fairly well after those initial sheds (post illness) and, then, went on to having absolutely no problems.

Not sure if this is what may be going on with Festivus.... that is, shed problems post injury/treatment.
'Course, it is also possible that Festivus did not, or does not, wish to push his nose against objects (to start shed process) due to his injury.:shrugs:

I had soaked him and tried to start a shed last night, but it really seemed to stress him out. It's not that he's afraid to rub his nose...he doesn't move at all. He barely raises his head....

I have read some more, and my heart is breaking for you and Festivus.:(
Back to my male snake, that I mentioned to you, ... he seemed awful before I removed his old skin but much better (though, of course, not 100% well) afterwards.
Don't know but ... am just wondering if his old skin (which becomes stuck if not removed) is causing him to seem much worse than what he may be.:shrugs:

BTW I broke the loosened old skin, around the neck area, and peeled off the back portion (from neck to tail) in the normal direction. The head piece I had to peel backwards (from neck to point of nose)... this was done, as stated before, very carefully.

I am still praying for the best for you & Festivus!

I am trying it again tonight...right now I'm checking the temp of the water....the last few days I touch him and think he's already gone, then his tail will twitch....

Beth, I hope this second bath helps... I've been pulling for Festivus and I still think that he is so lucky to have you loving him and taking care of him...

I really hope the best for him and I hope with all my heart that he recovers from this unfortunate accident...

Good luck Beth...

Other than the shed issue, and maybe a vet consult (via phone or ?), I'm not sure what else to say.

It seems you have done your best, for him, so, if he does pass, please don't feel that you didn't do enough.

BTW On the off chance that he should accept this feeding, I am not sure that feeding a pinkie, prior to soaking (which seems to stress him out), would be a good idea. I, myself, wouldn't feed prior to the soak.

Hang in there Beth. Via quite a few members (myself included) ... many good thoughts & prayers are with you.

He didn't eat....I had a feeling he wouldn't. The reason I wanted to feed before the soak is that he gets thirsty...he can't seem to find his waterbowl anymore, but drinks in the soak. I thought a wet pinky might entice a thirsty snake to suck the water off....and eat.

He didn't get stressed last night untl I tried to help him shed. I was gentle but he wanted none of it....and I couldnt get the skin to lift at all.....
