Metal in a mouse...My Poor Festivus

Hey Beth,
I was talking with my friend who is a big holistic exotics vet in the area. He says he would try the tubing of liquid food; like egg yolk and calcium or chicken baby food slurry. The addition of Probiotics would help, given he was on antibiotics. Those can be obtained at the grocery store or a health food store. The refrigerated stuff is best. There is also a commercial powdered food made by Oxbow for feeding sick herps. Your vet should have it available. If not and you want me to ship you some, send me your address and I'll overnight it. The key, he said is frequent small amounts, ie daily or twice daily. I asked if he thought this was too stressful and he said the benefit outweighs the risk. Healing takes calories and heat. Without both the animal just wastes away. He also said not to worry about the shed it'll happen on its own once the animal is properly hydrated and fed. Getting calories into Festy was of the utmost importance. He also said to keep him warm and dark and don't mess with him in between feedings. Again, I wish I lived closer so I could give hands on support. Of course on that topic I blame you for living on the east coast because I am never at fault.
Good Luck, fingers crossed, I'm pulling for both of you.
Terri

I got home late, no cola or eggs in the house. But I held him as he drank and will be going out tomorrow to get the means to feed him.
He doesn't look worse than he did this morning.

Thank you, Terri!

Hi Beth...
I continue my well wishes for your Festivus. Im amazed at your continued dedication and care. Wish all animals had human mommies (and daddies) as devoted as you are.

Susan

He's my boy so I have to do what I can....
that goes for everyone, even the rats.

My biggest question is...Robbie, if you see this, is it the ingredients in the cola that cleans out the tubes, or is it the air bubbles.

I want to buy a bottle of cola, but a bottle is more likely to go flat....would going flat hurt the cleaning ability of the cola?

I think it's a combination of both. We just used to get a can and pour the whole can down, but I'm pretty sure your feeding tube is a bit smaller. If they have those little mini cans at a decent price, I would suggest trying those.

And like "Magic" he appears!!

Or I could just be a hog and drink what's left :)
The tubes are tiny iv tubes attached to the syringe, they are about the width of a needle.

If you fill the syringe, that should probably be enough to squirt through.

And LOL at the Magic reference :D

Cola, huh?
Looks like I need to hit the supermarket!
The only trouble with having cola in the house is, I'll drink it! :)

Thank you again :)

Bethany,

I would suggest going to the local convenience store and buying a small bottle of Coke. A bottle will last longer than a can, esp. if you make sure to tighten the lid down. It'll last two or three days in the refrig normally, even after sitting on the coffee table all night.

Or, I could do that!! LOL

Honestly if you don't HAVE cola just squirt some water through the tube.....what's in the tube is stuff he was being fed anyway right?

That sounds good, except that eggyolk and calcium powder tend to congeal and get hard, and the feeding tubes are uber narrow.
So I want something to "melt the gunk" before rinsing with water.

OOOH...so this is for AFTER the feeding? I think if you feed and then immediately flush the tube with water you'll be fine....

I work in sanitation in a federally inspected food plant.
What's wrong with a little hot water and bleach? A little bleach goes a long way.
I wish you were closer, I could provide sterilized dosing needles and a large industrial ultrasonic cleaner good for sterilizing stuff like that.

I probably would be, but I only have a few tubes so I'd rather not risk gumming them up if it's at all possible. I also have a few non feeders still hanging on I'm thinking of tubing at the same time, can't hurt!

That's the wonderful thing about bleach and alcohol, they leave no residue if rinsed properly.
If they did, the biologicals would eventually become immune to them.
Bleach and alcohol are just as effective as when they were first used.
