Music quiz

The band played all three of the most well known rock festivals of the late 60's; the Monterey International Pop Festival, Woodstock, and the Altamont Free Concert.
 
I actually have a few CD's of Jefferson Airplane. I love the sixties and their music but dangit I am getting old!!!
So, who are these guys! I had to go find a somewhat more recent band that I like...

The artist in question fronted a few groups and has a solo career also. He uses a stage name which he has altered a few times. One of his groups (started in 1985) influenced several alternative rock artists.
The album in question is sort of a tribute to a Dutch artist.
