Music quiz

I'm going to go on a limb and say Grover Washington. He did stuff for the Cosby Show, and I'm guessing that's who it is. Now I've got one for you to guess. He's a bit more recent, and is one of the best artists of all time;

" Skylarkin' ". I don't pretend to know a lot, if not anything about him, but I do love Marvin Gaye, and Mercy Me is definitely one of my favorite songs of any genre. Personally I love Hip-Hop, but I do listen to Marvin Gaye, and some of my favorite hip-hop/rap songs have jazz influences. I'm always surprised when I hear an older song that was then used by some of todays artists, such as "Spaceship" by Kanye West, which is really "Distant Lovers" by Marvin Gaye, plus a few others. Terrace Martin and DJ Hi-Tek are some other producers who heavily uses jazz in their music. Not sure if you care, but maybe you should check some of it out some time, if for no other reason than to hear songs you may know being used in a whole new way.
By the way, have any idea who it is that I posted?.

You mean Steven Howse? ;)

Yeah, for an old fart, I get a kick out of beats/rhythms that are sampled from the music of "my generation" and put into hip-hop. Huge Steely Dan fan that I am, my favorite is "Deja Vu", by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz, which samples from SD's classic "Black Cow".

Oh my god, I'm completely repping you for that. To get the artist group name is impressive, but to get his real name is pretty crazy. I'll put up one more, but I warn you; this won't be easy. Alan gave me a heads up on tagging it correctly and this guy is pretty underground:

I'll give you a hint; he is a former member of a group formed with Aziatic and Nasir Jones.

I'm completely clueless on this one.

It's Cormega.

I had to look him up on Wiki. I read the first line - "Cory McKay, better known as Cormega, is an African American emcee noted for his vivid and poignant narratives about inner-city life" - and had "a moment".

Given that first sentence, and that Ricky first thought that the "Skylarking" album was something by Marvin Gaye, my brain immediately went to this song, the last tune from the most soulful album to come out of the 70s...

I hope I didn't gum up the thread; I just wanted to let people in on my (sometimes strange) synaptic connections.

Post an album cover Ricky!
You must either have FBI like investigation skills, or you just know your stuff. As for posting an album cover, he only has a few and all of them would have given it away immediately. Great guess, though, I'm impressed!. He's not well known at all, and I did my best to hide the tag, as to not give it away again. I'll try and post a real challenging one later if I can find one, but in the man time give your self a pat on the back. You nailed it!.

Thanks Ricky! Pat-pat-pat
You don't have to rush, we're a little slow in this thread sometimes.

Thanks Dale, one of my favs, we have a station here we listen to in my shop that gives us that at least once a week, it's a turner-upper for everyone.

I love that song. Not sure if you know this, but it was sampled 2 times at least as far as I know. The first time it was used in Spice 1's "Welcome to the Ghetto", and the second time the drums were bit by Outkast on "Crumblin' Erb" which is a great song, especially the intro by Andre. I also think it was used in a Scarface song, but I'm not quite sure which one.

I'm going to like you in this thread Ricky. I'm a fan of Andre and Big Boi, didn't realize that about Crumblin' Erb.
The Scarface one was "A Minute To Pray And a Second to Die". It's got Marvin's song sampled through the whole rap.

Have you ever heard anything off of "ATLien's". If you haven't I strongly suggest it. It's nothing like their newer stuff, but it's very creative and I definitely endorse it. Their's nothing with jazz or anything like that, but the sound is as original as anything else could be. It's definitely their most intra-spective album.

Yep I've heard Atliens, it's mostly clean tracks, a little dull if you don't like Outkast. It's like they knew that and got more creative for the Aquemini CD. I still like when they play like that, some of Speakerboxxx has that style when Andre3K raps.
Is that Idlewild CD any good?

Ya, it is cleaner, but that's what I love about it. It's very deep, and is one of those albums that transcends the era it was created in. "13th Floor/Growing Old" is my favorite Outkast song bar-none, and one of my favorite songs in general. Also, "Mainstream" (also on ATLiens) is an amazing song, too.
Don't get me wrong, I love Aquemeni; especially "West Savannah", "Da Art of Storytellin", "Spottieottiedopaliscious", and of course "Aquemeni" itself, but I'm biased when it comes to ATLiens
As for Speakerboxx/The Love Below, I thought those were two great albums. Especially the Love Below. Not so much for Andre's raps, cause their really aren't many, but more so for his creativity. The song I think your refering to as far as a more classic Andre sound is "Knowing", or something like that. It's off of Speakerboxx, but it's a really good song.
As for Idlewild, it's alright, but if you don't pick it up then your not missing anything. I do love the song on it called "The Train", but that's all Big Boi. Theirs another one called "Hollywood Divorce" featuring Lil Wayne, but it's not real great, and the rest of the album is mediocre.

All right, I just spent 15 painstaking minutes photoshopping all dead giveaways from this album cover, and I dare you to guess who the Artist is, and what the name of the album is. Extra credit if you can name the producer. If you need a hint I'll think you up one, but other than that good luck; by the way their is a huge Jazz influence in this album so if you can find it out I would recommend checking it out. One of my all time favorites!.
