!!!! My Unexpected EGGS !!!!

Wow...I just read through this whole thread, and I must say you and Dizzles are quite the troopers. I'm so amazed at how relatively calm and composed you are in this situation. If it were me, I'd probably be going crazy and crying my eyes out. I hope you guys pull through alright with this situation. I also hope your remaining eggs stay strong and hatch for you guys. I'll be praying for you and Dizzles.

i was literally just so close to getting the eggs out of dizzles!
I got her out and spent a good 5 maybe ten minutes with her gently massaging her behind the eggs. After a while i actually got the eggs right down to her vent, her vent opened up slightly and i could actually see one of the eggs, (slugs). It was right there, but i lost my grip on her and then once i had addjusted the eggs wer back to were they were when i started.
Im sure these eggs can be got out! I think tomorrow i will have another massage seshion with her with someone helping me to hold her steady, and i think i may also try the probing suggestion to guide the eggs out!
It was so close, im sure if shed have give it a good squeeze we could have got it out! (if only it was that simple).

shes cruzing round her tub now which is unusual given her activity over the last few weeks. I am hoping that maybe she is looking for a good place to lay the eggs. *Hoping*
Anyway i guess we shal see tomorrow.

If you can actually SEE the egg, and there is no tissue surrounding it (or preceding it), then you can use forceps or tweezers with "grippy" ends to grab it. Once you have hold of it in the forceps, be very gentle, or you will just break it into pieces. (If that happens, I would try to clean out as many pieces as possible, and irrigate the area with water to try to remove as much as you can. Then feed her to stimulate the elimination of the remainder). The best way is to roll / rock it for side to side with a twisting motion. That helps to break any adhesions to the surrounding tissue. Continue gently twisting, while pulling it slightly towards you, getting an even better grip if you can, as the egg starts to come out. Also, use your thumb on the snake's belly to prevent the egg from going backwards.

If you feel that there is any tissue in front of the egg, then abandon your effort, or you could cause a prolapse. In that case, let the egg go, and try to guide it out with a probe so you can avoid pushing tissue out ahead of it. If you still feel tissue, remove the probe and try at a slightly different angle, until you contact the egg directly.

ok thanks kathy!
il try and repeat the process that i did before then first and if i get to a point wer i can see the egg i wil try to get it with some tongues. If that fails il go for the probe!
thanks for all the great advice, i will of course let you know how everything goes.

I'd still give aspiration a go if you can. I massaged my female and nothing happened, but once it was down close to the vent I just pierced the egg thru her side wall where the scales on her side meet the ventral scales. It's already stretched apart from the egg and they really don't even move when you go in. Aspirate the contents and then let her pass the rest of the egg. Usually in a day or so. I just used some nolvosan to preclean and then clean after. No issues and no worries of prolapsing her accidently.

Brett i just caught up on everything again with poor Dizzles. I'm sorry you both half to keep enduring this cycle. But you are getting great advice and guidance from some top contributers here. I'll check back and see if Dizzles has made any progress for you. You two hang in there.

thanks guys.
well i dont really want to try probing her or aspirating her myself, i dont want to cause her anymore stress.
the good news is that wev got her booked in to a specialist vets tomorrow morning and hes going to get the eggs out.

Make sure you get to go into the room and watch what the vet does, in case you run into the problem again in the future. After my experience with an experienced herp vet years ago (manipulating the eggs so roughly that the females died), I like to know what they are doing. Then I can judge if I can do it better myself. Some things I can, and some things I can't. I just like to decide which to do myself, and what to leave to the experts.

thats a very good suggestion Kathy. I will do my best to get into the room so i can watch, i mean they can't really say no can they. :)

ok, so today has been a really busy day for me! heres how its gone so far....

got up early at eight and headed down to the gym to get my daily seshion out the way.
Our appointment at the vets was at 10.20 so we got there for that time, the vet examined dizz and said she looked to be in pretty good condition considering all the egg laying and all that. He give her a good looking over, checked her mouth and even let us listen to her heart beat with some fancy equipment. it was all fine. He said that she has the two eggs near her vent, and he said he could feel another couple further up. I left her at the vets this morning and they said to ring up later on to check on her but shel more than likely be staying ther over night. He said hes going to put her on a course of oxitosin (not just one shot) and lube and loosen her vent up and hopefully she will lay the eggs over the course of tonight, if not shes deffinately in the right place to have surgery. The vet was confident it wont come to that.

so got back from the vets about 12 oklock and headed down to the golf course with my bro and just played 18 holes in the lovely sunshine. All snake related problems out of mind for a few hours!

its now 5.45 and i have just rang the vets to check on her and she hasnt yet layed but there going to carry on with the injections and i have to ring again in the morning!

Thanks for the update, Brett. I would say "relax and put it out of your mind tonight," but I know that's probably impossible. Here's hoping all goes smoothly.

Brett I hope you wake up to good news. And I am glad you got the chance to relax and enjoy the day knowing your vet is on top of things.
P.S. Is it O.K. to send balloons to a snake? Will check in tomorrow.

oh my god this is SO frustrating! I rang the vets this morning and dizzles still hasnt passed the eggs, shes due for another shot of this oxitosin stuff in a bit! I feel like i payed a lot of money for nothing, what happened to getting the eggs out manually? they want me to go and collect her later and if she doesnt pass the eggs later they want me to take her back in next week for surgery.
I can say right now that i can not afford for her to have surgery, i was shocked at how much i had to pay yesterday just for her to stay in and have the injections. Im skint enough as it is and i payed out a lot for her to go yesterday thinking it would get sorted and what has happened? nothing!!!

im a bit pee'd off.

Have you asked the vet if he is familiar with the technique of aspirating the egg(s) to avoid surgery? Could you suggest it and tell him that it is commonly done in the US by top cornsnake breeders?

i will mention that later when i go to pick dizzles up from the vets. i was surprised that they didnt mention that yesterday but il see what he says about it later on.

Brett maybe you can to a search for someone in or around your for a corn snake breeder or
even snake breeder who is knowledgeable in this field to help Dizzles & you? Sometimes there might be someone in your own backyard and you didn't even know it.
I am hoping it all works out for you buddy.

To be honest, I'm not surprised at all that they didn't mention it. There is a possibility they dont know about it or how to do it. Then again, what cost more, staying and doing what they are doing (and surgery) or aspirating the egg? Bad thing is, if the eggs go too long it becomes hard to aspirate them because they begin to solidify. So no more liquid to drain out. I would say do what Kathy said and lube the area and try to use a probe again. Maybe you can incorporate the assistance of a friend to make it easier for you to hold her. Good luck with her and I hope she doesn't have to have surgery. :(
