What happened to the fur bag that did this to your pet? Is it yours or just a neighbourhood thug?

Here kitty, kitty, kitty :flames:

Just in case there are some easily offended cat lovers out there, I'm joking to try to lighten the situation, I have six cats of my own and I love them all.

Hello, it sounds as if you guys have this pretty much under control. I did want to mention something about peroxide. It can be used as an initial treatment to clean a wound. It should not be used after that due to the fact that it does slow healing. But using it once is not harmful. It is not the ideal thing to use, but it is better than nothing when you are in a bind.

A pain? You want to try putting eye-drops in - I ended up with more up my sleeves than I did on the snake!

Sounds good though with you, Corvine. Best of luck with the hurricane and let us know how your beastie gets on.

It was my cat, Doric. I'll stop hating her when my snake's ok. :p

I don't know, Kel, I think I'd rather just be able to hold him still and drop something in. The shots, though, I couldn't do.. not because he'd freak out, but because I would. :eek1:

I'll be able to get food Tuesday, I'll tell you all how that goes. As for now, he's still acting like he doesn't realize he's nearly decapitated. Was out checking for weak spots again last night. Argh!

I might suggest getting him on paper towel in the viv instead of regular substrate (providing that's what you keep him on) so that you don't get any more foreign bodies in the injury. Kel is right though that cats harbour tons of bacteria in their teeth and claws. I don't see why you couldn't use a diluted peroxide on a q-tip or something until you can get it to a vet. Neosporin/polysporin should help prevent infection too, although you said you didn't find any in your search. Good luck with him. I hope he recovers. I know there are a few people who post on here who work for vets that might be able to assist you further. There's also a web link that someone posted where you can e-mail a herp vet. I believe it's at www.alexhuereptiles.com/forums It's called "Ask the vet"

Good suggestion about the paper towels, Meg. The snake really doesn't need to be on any kind of substrate that will stick to its wounds. As for the peroxide, he'd be better off just rinsing it gently (with approximately 85 degree water) than using peroxide on it. Susan and I are both vet techs. I am willing to help if you have further questions and I am sure Susan would be, too. I simply felt that everyone else had things under control so I did not offer much advice :) Dr. Alan at Alex Hue's forum is a good person to contact, as well. You may want to refer him to this thread so he can see what you've already been told.

Well, firstly, thank you all for your replies.

We just got power back on, so I can finally run his temps like I want and can actually get out to buy him mice. He's been drinking and exploring, just generally acting normal, and he readily ate three small fuzzies this afternoon. His wounds still look absolutely horrid to me, but he seems to be pressing on just fine..

I have been applying the polysporin daily, and cleaning out his water very often (he keeps sitting in it.) I have him on newspaper and paper towels, yeah. I've always kept him on newspaper, and I put the paper towels in so he could move under them to feel safe without iritation.

I do have some questions for you vets, or anyone who has had a snake with a large portion of scales missing.. How do they heal? Is he going to grow scales back over that area?

jicin, you do not know her situation and you should bite your tongue once in a while, it might just help.

corvine, i hope that your snake makes it through, that the hurricane passes soon and you're able to get the necessary medicines to nurse your pet/friend back to health. best of luck to you and your slithery friend.

Jicin - I think this is the point at which you should take the conversation to PM if you want to talk about something off-topic.

The one thread I don't check the date on before I post and it is the one that is 2 years old lol...

I wonder how this snake is doing now that the thread has been revived. Did it survive, grow up, have children....?
