exactly though i don't care if i get taken seriously if i'm just typing here if i want people to take me seriously i'll actually attempt to make an effort to use correct punctuation. as of right now im not asking a question that i want an answer for or writing a formal letter or anything so i could care less if anyone takes me seriously

Then why bother posting? If you don't care if you are taken seriously, then why bother offering your opinion at all? Are you writing just to see your words in print? :shrugs:

First and foremost; welcome to the forums!! :)

Secondly - you deserve SOME kind of award for valor and bravery for making your initial post in this thread. ;)

Call me a Nazi, redneck or whatever you want, but recognise that I'm only interested in England remaining English. As someone who welcomes and enjoys racial and cultural diversity I fear that multiculturalism will destroy it eventually by diluting cultures, resulting in the subsequent loss of any diversity at all.

As long as an individual's culture(s) is/are appreciated and recognized, I don't see it as "dilution". Like a good gumbo, the flavors can be mixed together while each flavor remains distinct.

But - to continue the analogy - it all depends on how educated and sharp one's "palate" is.

(P.S. - Do any of you realise just how twitchy I've become in the preparation of the post? I know that one spelling mistake will see me lynched. :))
Hey, we here in the States have progressed. There may still be capital punishment, but we've pretty much stopped lynching 60 years ago. ;)

Twitch not. It was a helluva debut.

I know some of you will say I'm simplifying the problem and I am. Does anyone see a problem with police shooting a person who doesn't understand 'stop' or 'freeze'? What if the person is deaf, autistic, challenged...
For the person who said they couldn't get a job because they didn't speak Spanish, did the job listing specify Spanish required. What if it was a job requiring ASL, would you still be screaming about it?

Welcome to the forum mate!

I'm not sure whether anyone would agree that English is the official language of England or not, but I suspect it is, and we have Local Authorities here providing translation services at taxpayers' expense to immigrants who don't speak the language, have never contributed to society, and who have declared no interest in learning the indigeonous language. Witness one Asian woman who has been here 39 years and doesn't speak a word of it (and why should she have to when we happily supply her with a free translator whenever she needs it).

English is of course, the official language of England, and is the de facto language of all of the constituent countries of the UK.

Remember the song "Melting Pot"? Do we really want a world of "Coffee-coloured people" rather than the distinct and enchanting diversity we have now? Or should nondescript blandness be our future?

I thoroughly agree. I want to be able to visit various cultures around the World (and I already have done, but of course there's more to see) and see how they differ from us; their beliefs, customs, cuisine, everything. And vice versa for those visiting the UK. I hope the government does more to control illegal immigration, and keep immigration as a whole to a minimum. Considering more people emigrated than immigrated last year, that's a worrying sign. Using an appropriate analogy; I love being able to go down to a Chinese takeaway and get some food, but that's not the only thing I want to eat.

As long as the cultures remain distinct it doesn't really matter, in my opinion. Look at America, they are probably the most ethnically diverse nation on the planet, but they still have clear distict cultures within that :)

All the best

David

Yes, Susan, I also don't think that a person not stopping when told to should not necessarily give the police carte blanche to shoot him or her. But, in certain circumstances, that response might be warranted. I think that particular comment in the OP was so inflammatory as to not have been taken all that seriously my most here, and that instead people are attempting to discuss the sentiments that motivated that statement instead of addressing that statement directly.

The funny thing about not getting a job because one can't speak Spanish is this. Speaking Spanish is a skill. Being able to do arithmetic quickly in one's head is a skill. If the job requires the latter, and only one applicant also has the former skill in addition to the latter, capitalism would dictate that the job go to the former. Capitalism is a characteristically American ideal, and we use it to justify ruthlessly beating out poorer competitors all the time (for example, no one was very sympathetic to foreign sugar cane farmers who lost their jobs and starved when corn syrup was invented and the sugar cane market crashed, and few have shed any tears about the plight of Mexican corn farmers who can't make a living as a result of NAFTA). But then, when you turn that around and capitalism isn't working in the favor of Americans (for example, when Spanish speakers are getting jobs because they have the additional skill of being bi-lingual, or when jobs are getting outsourced because others will do the same job for much less money), some Americans start whining about it like big babies and invoking nationalist rhetoric to try to wiggle out of the inevitable consequences of the American capitalist ideal.

So, buck up. Do you support capitalism or not? If you do, learn Spanish to compete better if you really want that job. If you don't, and want government to subsidize your job, then it's not fair to complain when government subsidizes other things that don't benefit you but might benefit others and the economy in general, like English as a second language classes.

was that supposed to correct what i said, because it still didn't make sense....

TYPO..."so I couldn't care less if anyone takes me seriously" :spinner:

Perhaps yours was as well ;)

I have a feeling that a lot of prejudice and dislike of people different than the norm is caused by fear. Maybe if those people who dislike Spanish rapidly becoming one of America's most spoken languages actually put forth the effort to learn about Hispanic cultures and language, they would find themselves in better job opportunities and come to realize that people who bring into a country some very interesting and valid points of view, hard work ethic, and different ethnicities, should be welcomed.

I speak Spanish as a second language (not fluently, but I get by). I love speaking Spanish and I find it to be a rewarding experience to be able to communicate better with a wider variety of people.

The more you learn about something, the less you fear it, the less you fear it, the less you dislike it.

Some people need to learn how to be empathetic. It is a life skill that will serve you well.

I could go on, the reply by Susan, reply by TandJ, etc. There is a trend here that scares the %&$#@ out of me in this country. I feel absolutely awful that I have to read statements like this on a CORNSNAKE forum. If I didn't know any better I would think this is 'speak English or die' dot com. I find all of your statements bigoted, prejudicial and offensive as a person of Hispanic descent and American Citizen.

Ah yes. It's mentally scarring to read about people in the US talking about how you should speak english if you choose to reside in this country. What a terrible concept. That's right folks, move here and do whatever the hell you want.

Here's a history lesson, folks. Anybody ever really hear any stories about the Italians or Germans not being accepted? It wasn't because of their skin color, social standing, or their ability/non to speak english. It was because they chose to attempt to assimilate. They adopted the customs and habits of this country and they blended right in. Right or wrong, that's a very big reason why those two groups did not have major issues immigrating into this country.

Part of moving to a new country is about assimilation. If I moved to Poland or Germany I'd attempt to learn their language. Would I be able to speak it as well as they could in 6 months? A year? 5 years? Ever? No. But I'd sure as hell try and I'd try to communicate with them in their native tongue. I wouldn't immigrate and then demand that everyone ELSE learn my language so I can communicate with them. Whether or not you want to believe it, it happens all the time in this country.

In fact, this country has become one of victimization, and it's mostly because of this absurd mentality that everyone is out to get someone, or this and that. We coddle people in an attempt to make them feel better, and we refuse to let people know that they suck at things. This mentality that we teach to our kids that "oh honey you got an F on your test in math, but that's okay because you're a great kid and we love you and blaaah blaaah blaaah". So the kid could very well suck in math, it's not the end of the world. We have raised a society and culture of inability to be stern with people. We have raised a victim society of people who do no wrong. This country lacks personal responsibility and it's freaking disgusting. There is always an excuse for something, always a person out there whining that someone owes them something.

So you had to read some statements that you didn't like on a cornsnake forum. How terrible upsetting. You're a victim of being subjected to the real world, and for that I apologize. Hillary will make it okay, I promise. Whether or not you choose to believe it, there is a wide variety of people who own corn snakes. We have a wide variety of views, and many of which are obviously opposing.

Here's a great quote from my original post---which wasn't my words, by the way.

I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers.. The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens...Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.

Is this offensive to you? Are we polarizing black and white? Are you scarred? I've got news for you, this quote is 10000% accurate. And it's accurate because we as a society have allowed it to become that way. We are still playing the guilty/victim role of a country that 200 years ago allowed slavery. We pander to certain groups because we have a fear of upsetting people. But explain to me how it's okay to have a Miss Black America, or a Black Entertainment Television? Save your breath---because it is okay. However, god forbid if someone wanted to create a White Miss America, it'd be racist. Can't have it both ways, so it's one or the other. I'm not intolerant of black people, so I'm terribly sorry to inform you that I am not a bigot. I however am intolerant of people who have an attitude that I personally owe them something, when I do not. I am intolerant of people who expect hand outs for no reason whatsoever. If based on those beliefs you want to call me a bigot, then by all means...

How can you agree it is OK for a policeman to shoot somebody because they don't understand the word "Stop" as stated in the OP.
I have trouble with this. You misconstrued the original quote---and I sure hope it wasn't on purpose to make a point.

I think the police should have every right to shoot you if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word "freeze" or "stop" in English, see the above lines.

So if you're holding a gun and the police tell you to put the gun down, should you listen? Should the police have to make a judgment call with someone potentially pointing a gun at them whether or not the person can speak english? The quote does not just say that it's okay for a cop to shoot someone because they don't understand 'stop'. But you know, if the cop waited around and didn't act on instinct, what would happen if he ended up dead because he himself got shot?

What if that person is here legally, paying taxes, and working hard to support their family? What if they are taking classes at night after putting in their hours at work so they can learn? It doesn't happen overnight, you don't get your green card and suddenly magically know the language. And you ask them to put their own language and culture aside to embrace America. Not as if they could possibly have anything good to bring with them like family values, work ethic or strong belief in God. If they are here legally and paying taxes what skin off your nose is it what language they speak? So you sometimes have to press one on your phone. WAAAH! Hope your poor little finger is going to make it through all that!

If they're here legally good for them. If they're here illegally, they need to go back. I am tired of paying a good chunk of my hard earned money that goes to illegals, or programs that support them. I am tired of seeing my money being pissed away by ridiculous programs that our government creates for such matters. I despise my money being taken away and used as tax rebates for people that do not pay a dime of income tax.

If they want to immigrate into this country the correct way, Lady Liberty is here with open arms. This country was founded on those principles and they still exist today, no matter what you read in the communist rag that is the New York Times, or what you see on the Communist News Network. If you fall victim to sensationalized media then shame on you. Nobody is asking immigrants to come here and forget their culture. Ever hear of the term 'Melting Pot'?

I have the right "NOT" to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off.

I guess because I don't approve of lazy people living off my tax money I am a bigot.

I am sick of "Political Correctness." I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of them was born in Africa ; so how can they be "African-Americans"? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe . I am proud to be from America and nowhere else.

Nothing wrong here. What's up with the term 'African-American'? Know what's up with it? It's victimization and coddling. I do not go around calling myself a European American even though all of my ancestry can be tied to Europe. Why would I do such a thing? I was born in this country, my parents were, and most of my grandparents were. The only time you're a 'Blank-American' is if you personally moved here from another country that you were a citizen of. Funny how pissed off someone from Jamaica gets when you call 'em an African-American.

I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English!

Again, what's the problem here? If I cannot understand you, I am not buying anything from you. Don't you find it frustrating when you want to return something to Target and you have to talk to someone in Guest Experience in India that you can't understand? Or when you have a problem with an HP printer and 'I am sorry sir I cannot help you with your return of this product!'. That's never happened to you? You can choose to support whomever you'd like with your money and that doesn't make you a bigot.

So I'm still a bit confused as to exactly what you have a problem with.....

:shrugs::shrugs:

i could care less is an actually saying.... and you said "i couldn't care less IS anyone takes me seriously"

You quoted my correction...so I fail to see your point.

It might be an actual(ly) saying...but "I could care less" implies that you still care what people think, however small, about what you're saying.

However...I couldn't care less...says you really don't worry what people think, period.

The recursive loop has ended and control has been returned to the calling program.

Joe I think you may have a few misconceptions. My grandparents came here from Poland with 3 of 4 of their children, the youngest was born in US. They moved first to North Dakota and then to Milwaukee. They became citizens, they spoke little English. They didn't have to assimilate every store, shop and bar spoke Polish or German, in their neighborhood. Even the teachers in school spoke Polish or German, when I went to school there 55 years ago, WHY? Many of the children didn't speak English. Since my father served 22 years in the Marine Corp, his brother 21 years in the Marine Corp and his sisters were nurses in the Army. I'm glad they didn't go back to Poland, because their parents didn't speak English and you should be too. They defended a country they loved, a people they loved, it had nothing to do with the the language these people spoke. They defended your right to be a bigot and so would I. Not because you are a bigot but a human and we all have a conviction. I don't agree with yours, but I don't call you ignorant.

Ahem.

"The method has been completed, and the results, if any, have been returned to the respective instance of the object."

"Calling Program" is sooooooo COBOL. ;)
