Rat Poison, Part Deux: The Final Insult

In the words of John Denver.....

....hey, it's good to be back home again.

Crap! Did I just quote John Denver? :grin01:

I finally got released around 5:00 this afternoon, schlepping my briefcase, flowers, a 10 day supply of Warfarin, and three large boxes (a two weeks supply) of Lovenox.

And of course, I've got to drive back tomorrow morning for "the first blood draw of the rest of my life". In other words, more PT/INR tests. Another one is scheduled for Monday. Funny how they get more aggressive with treatment once the insurance kicks in. ;)

But I DO hope I get the same Phlebotomist - the one I had for the "thrombosis panel" this past Friday - FOR-EV-ER. After applying the tourniquet and tapping the crook in my arm opposite my elbow, she saw the vein she wanted to tap into. Without even looking me in the eyes, she greeted the blood vessel with the BEST Barbra Streisand "Well, Helloooo GAWGEOUS!"

She wasn't able to stick me with the needle until about 25 seconds had passed as I convulsed with laughter.

My thanks to everyone who has sent me their well wishes, both here and via PM. You all know who you are, and I am grateful.

Dale

Blood As Thick As Mud....

PT/INR level of 1.02 - after four days of Lovenox AND Warfarin. No wonder my heart got stressed out. It's trying to move the equivalent of joint grease through my blood vessels.

And lucky me, I came home from the blood draw today to a dog that got sick on the carpet.

Screw it, I'm buying a lottery ticket. Something's gotta go right this week. ;)

In the immortal words of Mick Jagger..."What a drag it is getting old..."...srsly...;)...

Best wishes to ya, bud

Aww Dale, Bo probably got a bit stressed, poor thing must be wondering what's been happening the last few days, with you not being around :(

Glad to see you're back home :) A lottery ticket sounds like a pretty good idea, your luck has got to change at some point soon, but let us know before you jet off on the round the world trip, so we don't think you're back in a hospital bed ;)

Best wishes,

You still got it Dale, even when your'e sick as a stick you can still make me laugh my butt off LOL.

Get better soon my friend, we are all wishing you the best. Thank feck I am going into mental health nursing....

Blood draw this morning, with a new INR of 1.3 - which surprises me, given that I lived on bratwurst and sauerkraut (high in Vitamin K) over the weekend.

Slowly but surely, I guess. (And I know - I'll stop calling you Shirley.)

regards,
jazz

What INR range is your therapy aiming at?

The range "last time" was 2.0 - 3.0, but I've read that with recurrent thrombosis and for the genetic mutants who have the "antiphospholipid antibodies" (read: ME), the game plan is between 2.5 and 3.5.

I plan on having a nice long sit-down with my reg'lar doc (the one who rolled me off in January), once he gets back from vacation. I plan on being the proactive, educated, engaged pain in the arse that you've come to know and love. I'm hoping this strategy will enhance his listening skill set, and thus, create the best course of action in my treatment.

And if that doesn't work, I'll smack him upside the head. ;)

jazz

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!!!

God Bless You, Patrick Ginn, M.D. You just saved yourself from dat smack upside da head. :laugh01:

Not only was he proactive in calling me before the time I expected (he's heading back from his vacation tonight), he's just as 'proactive and aggressive' in getting to the target INR levels (he's shooting for a MINIMUM of 2.7, and wants it to be around 3.0 - 3.2) as I am - this is EXACTLY what I had hoped for from him. He's already called in a new script for the warfarin with a change in dosage instructions.

Dang. Sometimes, I'm beginning to think, that physicians actually care about their patients.

(C'mon, let me have my moment. I'M the cynical one around here. ;) )

Dale, did you get tested regularly at a coumadin clinic? I worked a rotation doing blood work to monitor levels, it really helps out alot of people.

Anyway, I wish you the best luck.

EDIT: Just read that you were off the coumadin when this happened. What was your doc's reason for taking you off of it? In retrospect, a low dose of coumadin cannot even compare to a single aspirin tablet. Now taking the two together, you are talking possible fatal interactions. I hope doc has some good malpractice insurance.

Trending upwards.....

Just thought I'd post the results of the past few tests:

6/20 - 1.36
6/24 - 1.69
6/27 - 2.23 <----- In the words of JoeJr, a BIG-ASS jump. :grin01:

And that's because I had my dosage bumped up. I WAS at 5mgs/4x/week and 7.5mgs/3x/week - which was my "maintenance" dosage after the first time around a year and a half ago - but it was moved up to 7.5mgs/4x and 10mgs/3x, basically adding 2.5 mgs of rat poison a day.

My next test is on Tuesday; if I'm above 2.5, it's BUH-BYE to the Lovenox (heparin) injections, and the march onward to "stability".

Yeah, yeah, I know what you're all thinking. Shaddup, each and every one of you. ;)

regards,
jazz

(And I'm still waiting for my day RN to email those photos to me....)
