Red-backed Ratsnake (Oocatochus rufodorsata)

Carinata

Ever Evolving Exotics
I got this guy the 20th. He is a WC male Red-backed ratsnake. Also called the Chinese Garter snake. I had him in a 10 for observation then moved him to a 12qt tub. He is eating pinkies and fuzzies but he re-gurged his last fuzzy. I am a little worried but I think he will be fine if I stick to pinks. They are live bearers and I hope to do some Captive breeding with them. I got this one from Outback.

Hmmm. What a strange head! So really, he's more of a ratsnake than a garter snake. Not a garter snake at all?? Cool!

I can't imagine a live-bearer being in genus Elaphe, but anyway, that's the other side of the world. 'Natricine' as a word, to me means garters, ribbons, water snakes, and relatives.

But it is a cool looking snake, David. It actually visually looks half corn, half garter. IMHO.
Gotta love a snake that eats.

David, you and Robbie have me googling and learning a lot about snakes of the Far East. This being another.

That's a really cool looking snake! I worry about WC, so I hope he does well for you & that you can get him a girl, because then you can start supplying CB to the rest of us.

A CB population is non existent I am going to make it existent.

A neat find!

Not a cornsnake, mind you (those are snakey perfection doncha know...), and not the eye popping yellows of Jasmine, but a neat find nonetheless.

Looks nice and alert and healthy and you gotta love it when they eat!!
Good luck with it!

Came back for another look. He looks like what would happen in a garter x corn cross (which I am sure is not possible, BTW, I'm just imagining). Very neat. What are the environmental requirements?

Well if you get a well established CB (which won't happen until I have some) you need a 10 gallon, large water, cypress mulch, all at room temps. Now a import like I have is kept on newspaper, in a 12qt tub, large water, hides, no heat, fed once a week and only touched with sterile gloves. I am very careful. Hopefully next season I will have some babies. I am gonna price them pretty high at first, and then drop the price slowly. I am going to start them on chopped pinks as I will for baby garters and heralds.

So for healthy CB, care is really easy, as long as you don't mind chopping pinks when they are small!

Edit: That sounds like a great snake to have at my office. Viv needed isn't big, care is simple, once the snake outgrows the chipped pinks for dinner stage! Very neat. I have wanted a viv that would be OK in my office.

Me too, Danielle. I think it was because he is not used to mice and I fed him a bigger fuzzy. I am going to stick with pinks from now on. I may even go to fish if I get some.
