Selu the angry Sonoran gopher.

I STILL think her eyes and the "eyebrow" ridge is awesome! Has she calmed down since you've had her? I think I'd like to get a baby who MAY calm down with handling so by the time it's that big he/she wouldn't be as apt to strike? (I could only hope).. lol.

Thanks for sharing that beauty with us and keep the pics rolling.

I think Mr. T should have T-Shirts made with her face that say
"When I want your opinion I'll give it to you."

It took me a year of putting my hand in the cage and touching her. She got used to me and realized my touch isn't a bad touch. She allows me to hold her now and bring her out in public with out much fuss. Occasionally she does hiss but its to give the audience a show.

I think with enough work any one can get the angriest snake to calm down and be hand able.

I have been on a quest to find a Sonoran for 6 months now.. Its going to be a big day when I finally pick one up. ( I cant wait!)
Selu is one of best sonorans I have seen. Im jealous!

The KEY is getting enough guts to put your hand in there...lol :)
When you work with animals its something you have to do. Plus you have to get over the fear. Once you have been bitten by a large snake like Selu, its all down hill from there. But I have never been Bitten by her. I have earned her trust, she knows I will not harm her and she has never tried for me while I have been alone. She doesn't like my SO and actually she kinda is afraid of her.

Oh they are a fantastic and I think everyone should keep Pits. :)

Selu is afraid of your SO, or the other way around? Is there a way to work around that, or do you just have to accept it as is? i.e. Is there a way that your SO could also earn Selu's trust?

Well this is where the Catch 22 is. Most of my Pits do not like her. They hiss at my SO every time they get the chance. The only 2 that are calm with her are my 2 Pacific males. Everyone else.. well they just do not like her. So naturally she is a bit nervous when it comes to Selu, she will wear the gloves to be safe.

Me on the other hand, I let her come out of the cage and then I pick her up. If I reach in and grab her she is a bit grumpy. The only time I have gotten nearly bitten by her was when I was cleaning the inside of her cage's front door. She thought she was being fed and demanded her food and she lept out at me. lol
I think it was surprise for both of us. I stepped back and she fell down hanging out of her cage.

I'd have had a heart attack!

So your pits don't like her....do you think snakes sense fear like dogs do and take advantage of it?

No, I think its a hormone issue.
I worked with a woman at a Nature Center who had a bull snake that did not like her either. I held the snake and it was limp and calm. I then gave it back to her and it hissed and hollered. I took it back and it was again calm. I then handed it to my SO and it yelled at her. Back to me and it was calm.
Since both women were in their early 30's I figure it may be a hormone issue or at least something that was similar to the women that made this snake go off.

My god she's beautiful!

What's cracking me up in those pics....look at the third pic down...see the kids from the apartment behind you? Mom's in the doorway, the kids are watching you (and Selu is watching them!) Then go down to the 5th pic and the kid is hiding behind the tree and mom's making everyone come inside!

You must be the hero of every kid on that block!

Wow!
She was in a good mood that day! Nothing like when I saw her at your house...she was nearly smiling;)
She sure is a beauty, attitude and all:)
