Snake non-feeding and colour loss

"Use with heaters between 40 watts and 600 watts at 230 volts 50Hz ~"

Taka;s heat mat is also a Habistat and says that it's 11" by 11" and 12 Watts? If Ammy's is the same (and I think it is), that's only 24 watts combined. Would that be ok? The thermostat that we bought was really designed for the larger Habistat heat mat that we bought for the proper viv, when they make the move.

The guy in the pet store said that they don't need thermostats in the smaller tanks :(

EDIT: Thanks for all that advice and in-depth description BTW Susielea! I missed your last post while I was posting there :D. Will this thermostat be alright, do you think? I think it's more designed for bulbs and heat lamps than mats :/

Ok just saw you posted again and you've got a dimming stat, so the light will not go off.
You will just tweek the knob until the light dims once your thermometer is reading the correct temp, then go through the checking like I said before till it holds stable.

You should be fine running the two mats you've got off that dimmer, as the dimmer should probably take up to about 600 watts and your mats combined are probably less than 50 watts total.

Again hope that helps,

Ok, hold on I didn't realise that there was a minimum wattage on the dimming stat!

Right the two options I can think of are.
1) Go buy a mat stat, which are cheaper, as they control up to 100 watts of mat and can be used on the 6" X 11" which are 7.5 watts.
2) Raise your tanks on coasters or anything else you've got to hand until the correct temp, according to the digital thermometer is reached.

Darn you type too quick...lol

Aw man, so it won't work with these mats? Damn.
Oh well, looks like I'm going to have to get Mat Stats instead >_<.

Any recommended places to buy from online? :)

EDIT: Woah, out of interest I went and checked the "big mat" to use when the snakes move to big vivs. It's a 20 watt mat! So the stat is too powerful even for the big mat that the guy SOLD IT TO ME FOR USE WITH! Unless "40 to 600w" is just a guide?
I wonder if they'll take it back. They don't seem very reputable :/.

That's a couple of places I can think of off the top of my head, in the UK.

You can safely use the one mat stat if the mats are the same make, size and wattage. So you only need to buy one.

You could also google search "reptile temperature thermostats in the Uk" which might throw up some classifieds that may have them cheaper.

I'm also sending you a PM, Up the top of the screen under "welcome Arby".

EDIT: Just seen your last post, thanks :). I'll check it!

Ok the other thing you can do is take the dimming thermostat back to the shop and ask if he will exchange it for a mat stat and refund you the rest of the price, because the dimmers are more expensive, or exchange the rest of the price for supplies i.e "mousicles".

My shop would happily do that if I bought something I thought I needed and really didn't, as long as it was unused and in the packaging.

I can try, but I'm wondering if they're a bit.. Dodgy. Especially with Ammy not feeding, being advised to use thick woodchips for substrate, and being told never to feed in a seperate tank.. And now being sold the wrong kind of Stat/Mat combo.

Well, I'll pop back tomorrow and wee what I can do. Thanks for the advice again!

I'll keep you all updated on if Ammy feeds too :).

Ok will look forward to updates, I hope your local shop will do the exchange as I'm sure they will realise they will lose repeat sales from you if they don't help you out i.e supplies and feed etc.

Good luck and best wishes,

Update!

Checked this morning (well, midday), and... Ammy had eaten! Or at least found some way of making the mouse dissapear and gaining a small lump in her stomache in the process, lol.

So, yay!

And also the shop took the thermostat back, and changed it for a mat stat, so that's cool. I spent the spare cash on water dishes for their large vivs :D.

Stat is fitted now, and I'm trying to adjust it, although since for some reason one mat seems to get hotter than the other, I can't seem to get them exactly the same.. But it's getting there.

Thanks again for all your advice! Hopefully she will eat ok in the future :).

Yes and no. I am joking about the metric system. I do believe you are doing great. I think you are worrying too much and need to relax. I saw your picture on the Chit Chat forum and think your girlfriend is hot. I often joke so don’t take me too serious, unless I’m being serious. I often sound serious when I’m joking. It’s hard to know. But seriously, you are doing great and everything will be fine. Just need to be patient for a little while.

You see, Arby, with age comes wisdom. Everything worked out fine and your girlfriend is hot. Just like I said.

Yay Ammy ate her pinky...Whoopee!!!

I knew it was only a matter of time if she'd been eating before...Congratulations!

Great news that the shop agreed to change the stat for you and don't worry about the mats being slightly different temps if it's only a degree or so.

Well done and best wishes,

Thank you :D

We'll try her again this Friday - Maybe go with just putting her straight into the deli cup with the hot mouse this week too. And maybe try feeding her normally the week after that? If that seems like a good plan :). Obviously I don't want to have to put her in a deli cup to feed all of her life, so I guess 2 or 3 feedings like that would be ok?

When she grows out of the deli cup, just use a bigger container, and so on. The plastic tubs that chinese take-away come in are good with air holes melted with a hot screwdriver, then food-keeper tubs, then plastic storage boxes.......
One of my snakes refuses to eat in a feeding tub, so substrate ingestion is a worry for me with him. Another good reason to feed in a separate container is that it gives you a chance to spot-clean or completely clean the viv while your snake is occupied.

You've got the hang of this already...lol

Yes if I were you I would try her for another 3 or 4 feeds in the little pot just to establish a routine and then go back to whatever you were feeding her in before.
If by some small chance she refuses more than once after that, go back to the deli cup for a couple more feeds.

I'm sure she is now on the road to being a great feeder for you, so you don't have anything to worry about. You're doing great!!!

Best wishes,

Hey Janine, you posted while I was typing...lol...but that's probably a better solution...to just keep moving up in tub size as she grows.

There will probably come a point where Ammy will just eat her dinner before you have a chance to put the lid on the tub, so you can watch, and return her to her viv once she's finished.

Good luck,
