This is Nako

I think what everyone is trying to say is that it's best to feed F/T or freshly killed. :)

Maybe.

Haha, but really it is. Unfortunately it's hazardous to your snake and completely inhumane to the feeder animals. And because it is so rare for a snake to only accept live, it's only makes sense to feed prekilled.

Your little guy reminds me of my Sasha when she was teensy! So flippin' cute. <3

I have to agree with everything said so far. There is NOTHING natural about keeping a snake in a box in your house.
In nature most baby snakes are eaten by hawks, raccoons and other creatures, or starve to death, get hit by cars....is "natural" really what you want for your pet?????
Not only that, but live mice can also give your snake parasites.
It is also cruel to the prey item, which can feel fear and pain like any other living thing.

Now once in a great while, you will come across a snake that refuses to eat thawed food. In cases like that it is possible to get them feeding on humanely fresh killed. You still have a chance of parasite loads, but it is still way safer for the snake and kinder for the mouse. But those animals are few and far between.

Please ask yourself why you have a snake.
Is it because you are dazzled by their beauty, ease of care and wonderful temperments (like most of us here at this forum). Or is it because you think it is "cool" to be able to watch your pet kill things once a week. If it is the second reason, you should probably rethink keeping snakes.

I am no expert, but am learning every day. I have kept snakes for 17 years. Mostly cornsnakes but other species as well. In those 17 years, not one of the 3 ball pythons, 1 california king, 2 desert kings, 13 rosy boas, 1 grey banded king, 1 appalachicola king and over 60 cornsnakes, not one of them have EVER needed to eat live food.

Yeah it looks like he has mites. Watching the video you can see some of the spots moving in the water even as the snake is getting out. I would do a search on here for mite treatments and get started ASAP. Poor little guy.

Mites are natural. If natural is the way to go, why not let him remain infested? Maybe he will be "less of a snake" if he is parasite free....

Just sayin'.......

Guys, we should let the OP respond before we jump the shark.

I'm all for helping him get his snake better, but we don't want to piss the OP off beyond all reason and end up hurting the snake for the sake of being spiteful. He needs advice, examples, guidance and maybe a bit of tongue in cheek wit, not heavy handed slams.

Ya'll are my friends and I love you, but let's slow the roll a bit and at least let the OP respond.

Ok Ok. After triple checking him after this mite craze that started here im going to say no to he has mites. The specks in the water are from the bedding that is being used, and after looking real close to his white areas there are no black specks on him at all.

Also this is the first time i have heard so much about not feeding your snake live. Also its not humane to the pray, they are pray and it has happened thousands of times before, circle of life. And no i do not have my pet to just watch him eat....... me and my girl handle him every day (except after he feeds) and show him much love..........

Now I have heard from many people that feeding feeder mice that are live is no issue at all for your snake. Im not feeding him rats in feeding him mice

Thank You and lets calm down now

Well played with the pic!

Mice can still be a problem. I've had to rehab two rescue snakes that were mauled by mice. It's not exclusive to rats.

Look in the end it's your snake. Take precautions and be careful if you intend on feeding live.

In regards to the mites, your snakes eyes look irritated. It may not be mites, but it could be substrate related. You probably want to switch him over to shredded aspen very soon. Overall they enjoy the heck out of it. You will see your little guy making crazy tunnels and burrows. It's a bit better for them than the coco-husk.

I can understand feeding live when that is all a snake will eat.
I cannot understand a keeper who prefers risking their snakes health and prefers causing pain to small animals "just because".
To me, they are not putting the welfare of their snake first, and someone who does not put the safety and health of their snake first and foremost is a pretty poor keeper.

to me you are speaking from your personal preference. Im not a bad owner of a corn snake because i feed live in a controlled container and making sure everything goes ok.

Also sitting there for 45 minutes with pinkie in tongs getting your new corn snake to eat because it was given to you for that reason (not eating) is really a sign of a bad owner who does not love his pet because he feeds the little guy live instead of dead....

Back to nice things. Just got back from the pet store and got some shredded pine. will be cleaning the tank completely tonight when im back from work just as a 4th and 5th check for the mite scare

Pine shavings can be toxic towards reptiles, especially when the pine becomes wet and warm releasing the toxins. Stick with Aspen or other suitable substrate.

Just what I heard.

nope found mites.................. just spent the last 2 hours in a panic cleaning EVERYTHING. Submerging all items in the tank under bleach water... washing.. rinsing over and over.

I got Naco from a friend who was having trouble getting him to feed. Well guess what his collection has mites apparently.. Very frustrated. Will be picking up anti mite stuff in the morning. Everything is sterilized and mite free with tank wise. Nako is in a travel container chillin in some shredded aspen. Poor guy..

THanks for pointing that out guys would not of seen it this early without your concerns

If you want to control the mite population, get rid of the aspen. Keep him on paper towels in the mean time.

the aspen he is on will be thrown away and the travel container washed and water bleached. he is not touching his tank until he has been mite treated
