viktors meal tried to get away. haha

1. Corns eat very well on f/t. Unless your corn refuses f/t, there's no reason to feed live.
2. Prey item is WAY too big!
3. The way the corn wrapped around the mouse puts it right in front of the mouse's mouth. Munchy munchy for mousy.

Do we KNOW that's live and not p/k?

Edit: I mean, I know it looks like it hasn't been thawed, but I worked in a lab. Mice killed by the cervical dislocation method look remarkably normal except for the neck, and we can't see the neck in this picture, so I don't want to jump on the OP for feeding live when I don't know that's what happened. OP, was it live?

Before we bash the OP for no reason, how do know if this snake will only take live? I have a BP that will ONLY eat live prey, period.

Also I agree with Susan, the size looks fine, it's just an odd angle.

Looks live to me...

I agree, but I am not sure that at that angle in the coils of a constricting snake I could tell the difference between live & fresh p/k. I worked in a lab for a while & killed a bunch of mice via cervical dislocation & they looked totally normal (ie, alive) unless you could see the head/neck relationship when they were just killed.

True Betsy, but if it is pre killed, why did it try to get away?

Well, I don't know if it really did or if the OP thought the crazy attack angle made it look that way! I just don't want to make assumptions either way since the OP didn't say they fed live. Hopefully the OP will come back & tell us & if they did, then we can take appropriate action.

I am pretty hard hearted about mice so if I ran my own mouse colony which I knew was free of disease I might go for p/k sometimes, you see, so I can definitely see that as an option.

I am not hard hearted about anything, but I see prekilled as a nice clean fast death. I just don't like anything to suffer.

Indeed, but both rear legs appear to be bracing against the body of the snake.

Either that or its freshly killed.

oh yeah, the title of the post was 'viktors meal tried to get away. haha" so that implies the prey had the will to escape, hinting at life...

^ this is what I see too. *shrug* indeed we all know what is 'best' & our POV on feeding live & we can all jump to conclusions with several more posts, in the end really there are no answers until the OP posts a reply :smash:

1. that mouse is the right size, seems to me. My snakes that are about that size get f/t about the size of that mouse.

2. Its fairly obvious that mouse is alive as you can see is struggling. Even freshly killed my mice were limp not braced.

The mouse is obviously alive. Its rear feet are braced against the snake, and its vibrissae (whiskers) are erect.

I've never heard of a corn that required live prey.

ok....

my goodness. if i would have known i would have gotten all these replies i would have posted more info..
viktor doesnt like frozen, we have tried. he is a good eater and the mouse barely made a bump in his belly.
he shy's away from prekilled too. so we try to stick with what he knows best.
we have our own mice and i work for the pet store that i get mine from so i know that they are not diseased or anything like that.
thanks for all the concern tho.
i am one of the few owners that does live. only one snake will eat f/t.
i also make sure of the size to be sure they arent getting anything too large. and all mine only eat one mouse at a time. i dont really do two or three pinkies unless they are in that weird stage where one isnt enough or they arent ready for a bigger one. even then that is rare for me.
