So, my ratsnake is currently housed in a 10 gallon short. Sooner or later, he is going to grow out of it, leaving me with an empty tank. Rather than get anouther baby snake, which will eventually need a larger tank, I would like to get something that can live out it's life comfortably in a 10 gallon.

I was thinking maybe a rosehair or redknee tarantula. :) But was wondering what other options are out there as far as reptiles/amphibians? Any lizards or frogs/toads that you can think of, that are relatively simple to care for, and could live in a 10 gallon?

um green anoles. any little lizard any frog. and little tarantula. OH and hermit crabs lol i want a hermit crab lol
 
Even a Garter/Ribbon snake could.. a Pacman Frog.. Day Geckos House Geckos Rubber Boa Sand boa.. Any terrantula.. there are many options:p
 
Really? A rubber or sand boa could live in that small of a tank?

And as for geckos...don't they generally prefer a taller tank? This one is only about 7" tall.
 
i've heard male african house snakes can be comfortably housed in one but i'd prefer a 20 myself.

why not get some fish? i have a lovely ten gallon tank, that i keep 3 tiger barbs, 2 whiteskirt tetras, and a chinese algae eater.

Go with the Tarantula!!!

If you are looking for a tarantula, I would definitely go with an Avicularia metallica (Metallic Pink Toe) or an Avicularia avicularia (Common Pink Toe), or even a Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (Greenbottle Blue). Those are my personal favorite. They have great temperments and come in an array of colors. Here are my 3.

Those T's are freaking BEAUTIFUL!!! Yeah...if I go with a T, temerpment is my deciding factor....I know it's not good to hold them all the time, but would like to be able to handle it on occasion...and not worry about being attacked when cleaning the tank..hahahaha.

Can't do fish..the tank is a short...only 7 " tall.

Definatly going to research some of the snakes mentioned though. Snakes are always my first choice, because I can keep their food in bulk in the freezer, vs. having to go buy crickets weekly. I didn't realize there were actually options snake-wise for so small of a tank. The rubber boas are ridiculous looking...lol...but I do like what I am reading about them as far as temperment.

thank you ^__^ i adopted them from one of my mom's coworkers (he was just going to flush them!) and they've colored up some since that pic was taken. i'm getting a betta to replace my black rasbora that passsed away a few days ago, i had him for two years, he was a pretty lil fishie :cry:

I don't think I'd ever house an adult house snake in a 10 gallon. They can get just as big as corns.
 
I would go with a rubber boa. They are so cool! VERY low maintenance, don't get very big, and just feed on pinkies and fuzzies. Don S sells them. They don't even require any UTH, so you could technically put them anywhere in your house.

Yeah my little Betta only likes being fed. hate being looked at. I'm thinking of getting pretty fishes to put in my 1 gallon tall tank.
 
Will the rubber boas accept frozen thawed? There's a possibility of CA passing that charming law not allowing petstores to sell live pinkies. Good times. Sigh.

I'm also curious about the mountain kings that were mentioned...so right now I'm looking into both.
 
I was under the impression that a hognose would get to large for a 10 gallon. A shop by me has a female western and she is HUGE! Looks like a rattlesnake! heh. I would LOOOOVE a hoggie though...soooo cute!

I'd be thinking newts/salamanders myself. I'm sure there are some smaller species that could quite happily live out their lives in a smallish tank. I like Tiger Salamanders myself but I think they reach a decent size .... probably too much for a small tank.

I'm not too up on gallon measurements ..... whats a 10g's footprint in inches?
 
Yeah, I'm probably wrong about the house snake. I just remembered reading caresheets someplace that said 10 gallon. :sidestep:
 
i believe its called a florida rough scaled green snake...the max size they get is 2 feet and they eat crickets their entire life. they have a couple at the pet store near me..no one bought them but they are really cute...like 6-8 inches long.
