What Pele likes...how about yours?

Oooh, I totally forgot about this thread.

I have panicked once or twice as well searching for him. He blends very well and he is still so small. I once dumped 3/4 of the substrate out searching for him convinced he was gone but once I dumped it back in ..there he was still curled in curvy ball and looking at the crazy lady.

lol, 'what is this crazy person doing' is the default expression on about 99.9% of snakes, I'm thinking. Lucky for them, it's the expression they need most! :crazy01:

Aly doesn't burrow so much, she has a bushy plant next to her warm hide that I find she really likes. It allows her to watch me without necessarily seeing her. Or so she thinks. :p

Aida likes to hide in her little bush too. The plant is dark purple, so she actually blends in pretty well. She also likes to poop on her plant, which is less cute because those things are the hardest part of the viv to clean. That's Aida though: she likes to make my life as difficult as possible. Such a diva!

Willow loves her lego hide. It is an simple design (a long box with an opening at the top, see my photo album) and willow loves hiding in it and then poking her head up out of the top. If anyone gets too close, she goes back in, only to pop back out as soon as the "threat" goes away. I would say she spends 80% of the time curled up in that hide.

Willow also enjoys pushing all of the aspen away from the edge of the aquarium glass and lying against that. Interestingly, if anyone gets close to her then, she just ignores the person.

Based on the tunnels in the aspen, she enjoys that.

She also loves shirtsleeves

Cadayle loves her paper towel roll tube. You know, like one of those cardboard tubes from inside a paper towel roll. She's had it since she was a hatchling, and is now a year and 8 months old. I don't understand how she can still fit in it though! She's 152 grams and must be approaching the three foot mark, although I haven't measured her lately. She still loves it though, and manages to squeeze in there on a regular basis, albeit with a bit of her body sticking out either end.

It is interesting to hear about all of the different personalities.

My Butter Mot loves to swim! Several days a week he is sittin in the water and will swim around. I make sure the water is cleaned regularly since he is in it so much. I have heard people say that may mean mites, but my boy was given a clean bill of health by the local exotics/reptile vet.

My Normal has takes a swim every now and again. She is a petite lover and enjoys being held.

My Anery is a little nervous. She has to grab on to everything. Whether it be the tank as she is coming out or hoodies when she is being held. She loves feeling secure.

Cool! Neither of my snakes are big swimmers and they've never had any serious problems shedding, so I've never had a reason to take them for a dip. I'm glad your butter mot's ok :)

So what about differences in eating behavior for you all?

My two corns couldn't be more different. Wade is a total pig! He'll suck down anything I wave in front of him right away and cruise around for more like I'm hiding it from him :grin01:

Aida is a much more delicate eater. It takes her 3xs as long to eat her meal as it does Wade and she's on double pinks! Plus she's a butt muncher about 80% of the time.

I never see my babies in the water, not even when they are in shed. The only time I ever saw one of them playing with water was Charlie. In his hatchling tub, he used to flip over his dixie cup of water on top of his head and cruise around and bump it against the lid of the container. I watched him do this for like 15 minutes a couple times before taking him out and cleaning up his tub. I think it was his dramatic was of letting me know he wanted out.

Hahaha, that is hysterical. I can't stop picturing your wee snake wandering around with a dixie cup over his head, running into things.

He would make me think of the old movies when people in jail would run their metal cups along the bars, making noise begging to get out. Lol.

Hee, hey he just wants to be able to pump iron out in the yard! You should start poking eye holes in his water cup to help him navigate.

Lol, but then it wouldn't hold water. He's upgraded since then, he has a whole tank to cruise in now with a big boy water bowl. No more dixie cup. Maybe I should put it in there for old times sake though. :bird:

Let's see.... Zephyr loves to sit under her water bowl, or climb up and go around the top of her cage under the lid. She also likes to bury herself in her substrate except for her head and watch the world. She doesn't really like to be on the warm side of her cage for long. When I'm holding her, she likes to wrap just the tip of her tail in my bracelets and not let go.

Apollo likes to patrol around his tank to see what's going on. He also likes to lay on his branch like a little white tree boa. He likes to bury himself all the way under his substrate on occasion and make me think that he escaped. When I hold him, he wraps his tail around my fingers and then stretches himself out and smells the open air. It's adorable.

As for eating, Zephyr takes forever and really tenatively mouths her food several times before she'll eat. Apollo, on the other hand, will eat immediately, every time. He pushes his mouth on the side of the container to make it go down faster. haha

Aly is really chill when it comes to food. She gets really shy and won't eat until you have covered her feeding container with a cloth so no one can watch her. She's such a little lady lol. She takes about 20 minutes to eat her meal.

Charlie is so mellow until I hold the mouse near him, then he gets all tense and focused in hunt mode. He death glares his food for a second or two then strikes and coils around it like a pro. On double pinks, he would be too fat to do this again so he would strike and just let it flop to the ground. He eats both his feeders in about a minute each. He's my little piglet boy. Lol.

I was so thrilled to log in and see how much this thread has grown!! Pele's curled up in a towel on my lap right no, poking her head out every once in a while (just in a case a mouse comes by, I'm sure)

Since Pele is an only corn, I've really enjoyed reading all the enthusiastic observations about yours. There is so much more variety to snakes than a lot of people realize.

My boyfriend doesn't really get my snake thing (I grew up w/ them) and often comments that snake aren't "affectionate" or "playful" like mammal pets. Don't get me wrong, he appreciates Pele a lot, but hasn't quite come over to the reptile-side...

Nice to connect with some others who are just as snake crazed as me.
Thanks for sharing!

My AJ is the exact same way. He thinks they aren't as socially interactive as other pets (he's a bird person) and doesn't seem to care for them as much as I do. This only worsened after Aly poo'd on him, now he really wants nothing to do with them, lol. Our deal is if he can breed birds in the future, then I can have a snake room and breed snakes.

I think snakes, especially corns, are really fun to handle and actually are social. Each one has it's own personality and responds differently to being handled. They definitely make my day brighter and I even look forward to handling and feeding them. I'm a total reptile lover, and I'm glad there's more people out there as fond of them as me. :)

Hahhaha....my hubby doesn't like our corn at all. He doesn't get why I want one of my own (Bubblegum is my son's supposedly LOL). He says he allowed our son to get one because he can take it with him when he moves but he would have to divorce me to get rid of the one I want ... I told him he better save up for a good lawyer...Mama wants a corn!

Akuwa (Pin-stripe motley) tends to borrow ALOT, it's sometimes very hard to find her in her tank. As for the eating; She takes down two pinkies in under 15 minutes :)

I have two corns right now. Diji is my hypo snow, and our little lady. She was a striker and rather nervous as a hatchling. She has a soak hide (old Tupperware box with a hole in the lid) and she always hid in it. Several times I felt like I had a reenactment of Alien going on when I would pick up her hide and she would strike out like lightning, hitting my fingers several times before disappearing like she'd never been... lol
Now that she's almost 1 year, she's calmed down a lot. She's still a little nervous when held, and her tail tip is still figuring out how to wrap around something. Her movements are always delicate and dainty. Except for feeding. She is a BEAST then. lol At least until the mouse is "dead". Then she delicately checks it out, finds the head, and proceeds to take her time swallowing it. At least she's not nervous about being watched anymore.

Adonis is still a little guy, and quickly figured out how to climb *everywhere* in his viv. Including up under the screen. How do they DO that?! lol He loves his soakbox, too, and I swear he has a game he plays. Unlike Diji, who likes to hide a lot, he is very interested in what's going on. I'll often see just his head popping out of his box, and he'll hang out like that for extended periods if anyone's in the room. I have peat moss in the boxes, and his game is wearing a piece like a hat! He will get a piece of it and balance it on the center of his head while he watches us! At first, I thought he'd just burrowed and the moss hadn't all come off. But he kept doing it. And then, he was stretched in full along the front of his tank one day, head up a good 3", and a big "hat" on. Too cute! I've tried to get pics, but so far, none have turned out well.

I'm glad Diji calmed down for you! I know a lot of baby corns have a habit of being flighty and nippy, but luckily for us, they calm down. I've lucked out with both of my corns: they're pretty laid back. I thought there was something wrong with my amel the first few times I handled him because he didn't freak out on me!

Do you leave your moist hides (soak boxes) in your vivs even when they're not shedding? I've heard a few people mention that letting your snake hang out in most hides all of the time can lead to scale rot, but your mileage may vary!

That's interesting - my amel (Adonis) was super laid back too. He's never struck or tried to lunge away. Even when he was popped!

I haven't heard that about the scale rot. But I *am* new to corns! So far, I've had no problems, and they get handled at least a couple times a week, during which they always get a once-over. Also, their soak hides aren't the only hides they have, and they do go for stretches where they won't use them at all. Diji's fav now is her paper tube - had to cut down a Christmas paper tube to fit in her viv so she can fit in it comfortably. Paper towel tubes were just a little too small! :)

I find it really fascinating how different from each other my two corns are! My first one, Kaa, is very shy and can be quite jumpy. If he's poking his head out of one of his hides and you walk past, he retreats immediately. He was also very flighty as a hatchling and even now he'll occasionally flop around a bit when I take him out of his viv. It took at least a couple of months for him to be comfortable getting passed from one person to another when he was handled. He also likes to act like a big scary snake with lots of tail rattling, and he definitely tried to strike a lot when he was smaller. He loves to climb on this grapewood log I have for him and sometimes he'll tuck himself away at the back of it which is really cute.

On the other hand, my second snake, Georgia, is super easy going. She'll just hang out in one of her hides and watch you, and even if you get right up close to her it doesn't phase her. I haven't had her all that long but I have NEVER seen her do a tail rattle (and she's pretty teeny right now, too) and the only time she tried to strike at me was a half-hearted strike as I was opening up the deli cup she got shipped to me in. She's incredibly calm when being handled and has no issues being passed around between people. She's got a grapewood log too and she's not as much of a climber as Kaa is but she does it occasionally.

They both burrow a bit but Kaa is big on rearranging his substrate. He seems to prefer laying right on the glass on the cool side, whereas Georgia prefers the glass on the warm side. She even cleared this adorable perfect little snake-sized circle under her warm hide that she likes to curl up in. <3

I always wonder which one of them has more of a "typical" corn snake personality. Obviously the only solution is to get more snakes and compare. :grin01:
