wots the worst piece of reptile advice you've ever been given??

1) "Ball pythons never eat their first mouse voluntarily, but once you force-feed the first one they'll always eat after that. If you don't force the first one they never eat and starve to death."

2) When pointed out mites on an in-store blizzard:

"That's normal, all snakes have insects on them."

3) When pet-store employee realised the milk snake he was holding was pooping on him, he chucks it into a fishtank in disgust then holds me off until it drowns, thus earning a punch from me.

4) Veggy friend: "If you cut up tofu into mouse shapes your snake will never know the difference."

5) "Iguanas only eat meat, you must be a crazy vegetarian to be arguing with me about this." (I hope you all see the irony there!)

And finally.....

6) "Oh, no, that green tree python isn't aggressive at all." (Said GTP is handed to me for inspection where it happily sinks its teeth into my wrist, coils around my arm and can only be persuaded to let go by being doused with water.)

They drowned it???? Seriously?????

yah, that's just stupid... what did it accomplish? Teaching the snake not to bite?

Or maybe it was a lesson to other milk snakes out there?

goddam that pisses me off

oops I cussed

umm, that wasn't supposed to happen

Here's what happened: I was the only customer in the store (remember I am in Taiwan) and there are 2 sales assistants. They can't speak english and my chinese is pretty rubbish. I ask to see the snake, one of the guys comes forward and gets it out of the tank. It starts to poop on him, he freaks out and holds it under the water of the nearest fish tank. Both guys find my distress highly amusing and the second guy holds me back when I start to charge forward. Kicking and screaming accompanied by laughter of 2 blokes. After the snake is dead, he lets me go, I say one of the few swear words I know in chinese and they laugh some more, so I punch the one who drowned the snake and storm off.

However *evil smile* I discovered that another pet-store friend of mine actually supplies the first horrible place. My friend is the only guy on the island with import permits, so basically you don't upset him or you go out of business. I told him what happened, he was crazy mad, stopped supplying them and boom, no more horrible pet store :) I dunno if he was actually mad about the whole 'how dare you treat my foreign friend like that' bit, but after all that I was just pleased with the outcome.

The thing though is, it is good that the shop went out of business, so no more abused animals. But the clerks that drowned the snakes probably were working for a low wage and just found another job at 7 -11.

This is terrible. I hope your punch got him good. Did he fall over at least?

By the way, if one of them held you back, you could have called the cops as he would have been assaulting you. Also, isn't there any animal control agencies there that they could have been reported to? I'd like to see the CLERKS themselves suffer!

Dang were they big blokes or something? How could that guy have held you back like that? You shoulda kicked both their a$$e$!!

UGH!!! The factthat they drowned the snakes makes me angry. The fact that they were laughing about it makes me even angrier!!!!

Hey ickle_moose. Why not start taking some martial arts classes in case something like this happens again? They were obviously not just angry against the snakes. They were trying to make a fool of you!!

I'm a girl, and a petite one too, so didn't stand a chance really. It was a weird crossing of lines for them, as while females are definately much lower down the social ladder than males here, man-handling one as they did to me, (and as you say basically going for full-on humiliation) is a massive break of taboo.

Animal welfare here is higher on the authorities agenda than other asian countries I've visited, though still leaves much to be desired. You are much more likely to make a difference if you take the back-door approach as I did. Same with the police, they aren't so interested in doing anything, esp. if you aren't hurt (and I don't want to blow anything out of proportion, I wasn't hurt though I was restrained), so again, back door works best. Hint: the admittedly quite girly punch I landed on him wasn't the only punch he and his friend recieved due to this incident.

I guess it all comes down to standing up for the animals welfare, no matter what approach you have to take or which continent you are on. Don't get me wrong, (to quote the Fonz in 'The Waterboy') I'm not telling you to go on a shooting rampage, but quite often just causing enough of a scene can do the trick. Don't walk away people, find someone to shout at!

I have to say that I don't agree with the gender profiles you say in your message. I mean, I agree that they exist, but I don't agree with them being right. If anyone violates anyone, that's a violation whether is male, female, whatever. It's a pity that the police over there in Taiwan don't care much. I'm sure if someone starts some noise eventually they will be forced to care.

And BTW, girls can be just as tough as guys!!

:flames: (THe guy who killed the snake here)

:twoguns: (The guy who restrained you here)

then

:sobstory: (The violin = their necks)

That's horrible...drowning a snake just because of that.:flames:

I would have done something a bit more drastic...finding a heavy object nearby and putting it where the sun don't shine sounds good...killing any living thing like that for such a trivial reason, it blows the mind.:puke01:

I don't agree with the gender gap here either, I was just pointing out that I have to take into account cultural differences when out and about. After all, this is not my culture or country. Also, I know gals can be as tough as guys, but in that specific situation I wasn't exactly prepared for a fight! I mean, how many other girls here think they are going to have to defend themselves against the pet-store clerks?

I agree that if people make enough noise then things can change, but it is definately not up to the foreign population to impose another view onto a culture. Of course I want people to stand up for me, and for people to listen when I stand up for myself, but we can only do that from a personal standpoint rather than a cultural one. I'm waffling now, but basically I feel I can say, 'that was wrong, you shouldn't have treated me that way, and p.s. I have a bunch of mates with me who think you'd look much better as a grease stain on the pavement', but I don't feel I can say, 'that was wrong because you treated me in much the same way as you'd treat a Taiwanese woman and I'm here to change your minds'.

I'd hate to see what I'd do to somebody if they forcibly restrained me while drowning an animal. I have a lot of pent up anger I'd let loose, and it'd be ugly for them, that's for sure.

*smirks* But I certainly am not a girly-girl, as you put it, so.... :grin01:

Yes I can say a lot about that but its not important. Do remember that it's not just that they treated you wrong, which is bad enough but not the main point. They drowned a poor helpless animal and thought of it as a joke.

By the way, instead of the girly girl punch you coulda kicked him in the balls... but I guess its too late now. Just a thought... :shrugs:

I'm impressed, Moose, I'd have you on my side in a fight any day...

It took more guts to act than most people have.

And you DID get the job done in thelong run, didn't you...

Thanks for all the support :) Anyhoo, apologies to whoever started this thread as I seem to have hi-jacked it somewhat :grin01: Yeah, I did regret not giving the guy a good balls kick, but you only think of any of this after. I was much more like, *smack*, run away, come back with reinforcements!
