Apparently I've turned into an Arabian rescue...

So, my aunt called me about 3 weeks ago and told me about an abandoned residence a few miles up the road. With the economy going the way it is, people walking away from their home is nothing new around here. In my area, everyone wants a little piece of the foothills, so there must've been 4 new developments that went up in the big boom. The only problem with this residence was that these people left their critters behind. Not just 2 or 3 critters, but roughly 30 (horses, donkeys, chickens, goats, cows, dogs, cats, geese). My aunt is known for livestock rescue, but when she saw one of the horses she immediately thought of me. I'm glad she did :)

No papers, no registration (that we know of yet). My vet estimates her age to be around 15. She does have a freeze brand on her neck under her mane that we are trying to track. So far, I'm just waiting on the AHA to get back to me. Suprisingly enough, she looks to be in great shape too. Her and the other horses & cows were turned out in a pretty nicely vegitated 2 or 3 acre area, so those palo verdes must've been enough for her. Some of the other horses were a tad shy, but she is just about bombproof. The only thing I can think of is that she was a kid's horse because I've tried to push her buttons with everything, and so far she's resisted flying off the handle.

So without further chit chat, here is "Vidette" ("blessed" in Hawaiian). I just call her Vee.

Just by looking at her, I don't think she is crossed with anything. I'm not 100% sure though. Then again, most crossbred horses don't get a freeze-brand (thats usually an overseas thing). Time will tell though. she's definitely a doll though, and unless someone claims her, I'm keeping her! Well... sort of. For right now, she is at my Aunt's house since A) she runs a legitimate livestock rescue organization, and B) "technically" Vee has to remain in the county she was discovered for 30 days until she can be officially labeled as "abandoned." Works for me... Aunt Katie only lives about 3 miles down the road :)

All the other animals were also saved. The chickens, goats, and other horses/donkeys went to my aunt's house as well. The dogs and cats went to my cousin, the vet tech, and the cows and geese went to a friend of the family who has some property in the Gilbert area.

She's beautiful! You ought to be able to track her by the freeze brand. Do they even do that anymore? They did when I had Arabs...Is she a black or a bay? Can you tell?

She has a scar running through the beginning of the brand, which might make it hard to identify. We took a billion pictures of it and sent it into the AHA. The funny part was that I first called them, and the rep that I spoke with asked me over the phone "What does it say?"
"Ummmm... :uhoh: If I knew what it said, would I be calling you?"

So, hopefully they can figure it out. As far as I know, they didn't do that here anymore unless it was to document mustang herds. This is very similar to the freeze brand Sadar had though, so maybe she's imported? But why would these people leave an imported Arabian mare behind? Its not exactly cheap to import a horse, let alone what she must have cost alone. One thought that scares me is... Perhaps, she was stolen.

:shrugs:

We've been following the law with this the entire time, so nothing will blow back on us. It just makes me sick to think of people stealing horses. She's a doll, so she's obviously been loved alot.

Though, this is all speculation. I honestly haven't a clue.

She is... a black-bay :grin01: She's mainly black, but she does have some red highlights to her. I would personally call her black, but alot of Arab people won't unless they've got that blue "true black" look to them.

Domestic arabs can be freeze-branded, too. If I recall correctly, the first character refers to the breed, then the two little characters are the year of foaling, and then the rest is the registration number. It isn't a language, it's the alpha angle system.

Maybe they could help you identify her!

She is simply stunning!!! I hope she ends up being yours. :)

Me too. I'm starting to become quite fond of her (like no one saw that happening). I just hope she doesn't have a family out there thats missing her.

Its funny, my Mother is... kinda... ok, well she's a snob when it comes to Arabs (there I said it). So she got a little stand-offish when I told her I might be bringing another mare home, and then told her about her story, the rescue, etc. Good lord... don't ever tell that woman you are bringing an unregistered anything to her barn. :grin01: Dad and I just laughed at her. She wasn't very happy about it,

It would be kind of neat to see her next to the itty bitty girls I have. Even though she looks tiny in the pic, Vee is every bit of 15.2 hands high.

I bet her family misses her. She looks well cared for. I can't imagine the circumstances that caused them to have to just walk away. They should have told someone.

Ok so, apparently... according to the conversation I just had with my aunt who is reading the brand while talking to me on her cell phone while I'm decoding it off that picture...

She's an Arabian, she was born in 1997, and her registration number is 541455.

Eureka! I feel like Inspector Gadget!

*MUAH* Thank you so much Nanci! I would've never thought to look online for any of this!

Wow Catherine, she's gorgeous!! I hope that she ends up staying with you.

Our first Arab had a freeze brand...kinda neat. It is very cool that you were able to find out some information on her. I just did that a few weeks ago with my new off the track thoroughbred. It feels so awesome to discover information about an animal that you knew absolutely nothing about.

Shoot, I found a forum where you can ask people with DataSource to look up a horse for you, but you have to be approved to post, which takes 24 hours...

No worries Nanci. I have a membership to the AHA. Hell, I think I have had one since the day I was born, knowing my parents :p

Hmmm the funny thing is she had to have been kept in a stall to be so dark without any sunfading. How sad that she was abandoned. It does make me wonder if she was stolen and then dumped when the heat was on. She is lovely and although I hope she goes back to the people who loved her...if they truly lost her and didn't dump her of course, I also have to hope you get to keep her! Is she well trained?

Well, I wouldn't take her out to a dressage competition, but she is quite well-mannered and knows her stuff in the saddle. When I climbed on her back, I treated her like a green-broke. I would just keep asking her to do something, and she'd do it with no complaints. I was suprised when she pulled off a running side-pass, but I wasn't about to ask for a flying lead change or anything :grin01: Three of the 4 horses were surprisingly well trained. The 2 older quarter-type geldings seemed to know a bit of reining, and the younger paint mare had a cute little 12 inch jog. The other mare was... well, nuts. She's hanging out wih the rescue ponies now.

She seems to be more of an outside horse... she's definitely more comfortable on the trail. I wonder if maybe she really is that dark blue black kind of girl, but being outside turned her this color? Her and the other horses & donkeys were found in the large turn out. Neighbors had said they'd been without care for about a month. There were no stalls on the property though, so I'm guessing the turnout was it.
