Before Getting Into A Hobby

SHAKSNAKE

The crappy keeper!
first of all im a noob and a young college student.

I just want to say i see a lot of people asking very juvenile questions on the forum, which is ok but if you don't know what temperatures a corn snake needs to survive, or what substrates are harmful you shouldn't be anywhere near one....YET.

my suggestion to all who haven't gotten a corn snake or any pet for that matter. buy yourself a book on the subject and read it. or google information and read as much as you can

i bought a corn snake book in august and bought my corn snake in October. i still go back to the book for quick questions and things of that nature and i still come into this forum to ask basic questions also, but i think some people are really just getting ahead of themselves and buying snakes and asking questions later. do yourself and your pet a favor, be responsible and become knowledgeable of something before you get into it.

not to preach but some people make us noobs look like idiots. as for me, i've done an extensive amount of homework before finally getting my corn snake. that should be a no brainier for anyone that is thinking about getting into any hobby!

just wanted to give my 2 cents on that. cheers!

unfortunately the ones who buy a corn without any homework won't be here to read this before buying...

"What ELSE can i feed him?? "
"Snake went "blue" once a snake "goes blue" how long until they finally shed?"
"Feed during shed? HELP!! "
"Drinking Water for my corn "

I think you need to buy a better book or stop pointing fingers at new people.:poke::noevil:

Everyone started somewhere. If folks aren't inclined to read a book as a starting point, I'd rather they asked questions here than took their best guess and killed the snake. Yes they might get a fairly short answer involving book recommendations, but at least they're making the effort.

Kali's right - the ones who really need to get educated are the ones who won't bother trying. We'll never hear from them.

I read about corns for months before I bought and was a member here and asked questions for I think 2 weeks. But I still ask dumb questions. I would rather come off looking like a retard or someone who jumped the gun and did not study them before I bought than end up having a dead snake. Just my 0.02

I have done much research before obtaining my first corn snake. And i have only asked one juvenile question which wasn't really that stupid i should say i was just really "Freaked-out" because she wouldn't eat at all. which i got her to eat eventually.

The only stupid question is the one you do not ask.

You may get a short answer but at least you got an answer.

No problems with questions but try to take the advice given otherwises why ask.
I also think well thought out properly asked questions get more anwers.

Really you took none of the advice given by anyone and 'eventually' one day later got her to eat. So now we will all wait to see if there is a regurg. Hopefully for your snakes sake she won't.

The only advice I have turned down was trickster pup telling me to wait 6 months before I got a 2nd snake

Not everyone plans in advance to have a snake (or any other animal) as a pet. Sometimes opportunities simply present themselves (rescue situations for example) and people take it into their own hearts and hands to provide a better life for such animals. Then they have to learn ASAP.

I'm very thankful to everyone in this Forum that took the time, patience and kindness to help me when I was asking (what you may deem) 'juvenile' questions.

Ease up on Newbies!

I'm newbie myself ad i think i did my 'homework' before getting my snake. But i think you will always find that you don't know certain things. Example: I thought my snake was blue but with poor light. Next day i checked and saw nothing blue on the eyes and blamed the light from the day before. Few hours later and the snake sheds and inly then i learned about the clear eye phase.

I also agree that not everybody plans on getting the snake months before.

I'm sure i asked questions here while some people thought "he should have known that before he got the snake" but hey nobody's perfect!

THIS from Mr "I know that most people won't feed live for many good reasons, but I do feed live because I WANT TO and if I get f/t I will have to go out of my way and it's just not worth it to me to have to go alll the way across town for my snake".

Paleeze...I would MUCH rather help out a newbie who has no clue but will listen and has the best interests of his snake at heart than someone who asks, gets many answers saying one thing, then states he will do the opposite because doing to right thing is just too much of an effort.

Please don't get me wrong I am all for questions, better to ask then make a mistake. I asked plenty of silly questions and got many patient responses and great help. I just wish some would take a moment and listen or at least consider the ramifications of ignoring advice.

i go to this site to double check things i've read. the book i have doesn't specify on time with shedding and the rest i'm sure you just wanted to piss me off... anyway fatman go play with yourself. u been on my tail since i registered to this site with your "troll" BS. no one was pointing fingers because no one was called out. my first statement was "im a noob" i consider myself one of them. so i wanted to give a bit of advice.

so kindly. get off my....

Personally, as a "noob" you probably shouldn't be giving advice unless it's a personal experience, maybe some people don't know there are books out there that give advice on snakes. Personally, in reading through some of your posts, I think you're simply looking for an argument, because you say you are asking for opinions, but then you do whatever you wanted to in the first place anyway. What's the point in asking for the opinions then? And if you say, to have a discussion or something, why not start a poll thread or opinion thread saying, hey I'm curious, this is the way I do things, what do you guys do? Rather than making it sound like you're asking for our opinions.

so i'm wrong for feeding a snake live mice.... ok. since you insist on further explanations lol. i read in my book that i may feed live mice, then i came to this site for futher OPINIONS. then i made my decision. which was to feed live. :sobstory:

a lot of american's can't help but to impose their views on to people. even things as simple at what kind of mice to feed a pet snake.

What does being an American have to do with it? (seeing as you're located in NY?)

Yes I think you are wrong. LOTS of people here think you are wrong.
Some books aren't worth the paper they are written on either.
You asked, we answered. Then you said that what we said was too much trouble for you. Don't crack on the newbies when you don't follow advice yourself. You are considered a crap keeper by many on here.

no one is cracking on noobs. again, i am a noob trying to help.

and thats too bad! because i didn't come here to seek your approval of my snake keeping. :sobstory:

but since you want to comment, why don't you pull up some pics of my setup or my snake and show how "crappy" i am as an owner? since your so hasty to make that assumption.
