Before Getting Into A Hobby

Books suck a big one. I have a corn snake book and half the pages are falling out and being used as coasters. I've got more knowledge from these lovely people around this site then I have reading that ridiculous book.

Beer gooood, books baaad.

Although that book may be good (I've never read it) that doesn't mean that ONE book is the end all be all of corn care! I looked up a bunch of websites on the subject and STILL came here to ask questions and gain more information. Not to mention, just because it says it in a book, doesn't mean that's the way it should be done, I'd rather hear people's experiences with what works and what doesn't

i agree. thats why i still come here, i read it but sometimes i want to double check and post. i'm not bashing anyone but for example, i saw a thread of someone asking if they can feed their corn snake fruits lol. obviously this person needed to read at least a couple pages on corn snake care.

i like beer more than books too man!

People don't read books any more apparently, they are accustomed to getting quick answers. There are a few experts here that have wrote many books that are out there, guess they never post here cause...they already wrote the book.
When I joined this site I assumed people knew the basics...seems many come here to get the basics...after the fact.
Yes it's annoying, no wonder some of the leading experts don't post here on a regular basis...who wants to explain why snakes can't be fed a vegan diet ? :dunce:

agreed. that's what i was trying to say

I have a number of books on keeping corn snakes. It's amazing that there are a lot of things the experts don't seem to agree on. Plus there are a lot of areas that are kind of gray. So I can see why someone would ask questions here even after reading the books. It would be nice, however, if we could read through the posts and hear other people's opinions without seeing them called things like "crap keepers". I myself do some things that others would call definitely wrong, but I usually keep quiet because of the holier-than-thou attitudes of some.

This board is certainly a great example of that in action. It's frequently a whole bunch of experts disagreeing with each other! I'm sometimes not convinced we're better than a good book, which will at least give one reasoned and authoritative view which at worst, will not cause harm (the two books I'm thinking of anyway) and will avoid confusion.

I occasionally wish we could give more definitive answers to new starters, but the bottom line is that these are few and far between with Corn keeping. And I doubt any two keepers would agree on exactly what they are anyway!

Here are some definite answers I think we all agree upon:
1) keep your snake away from your cats & dogs who may kill it, interactions between carnivorous mammal pets & cornsnakes should be supervised
2) rodents not insects are the proper food
3) make sure they have clean water to drink (definitions of clean water may vary, some folks go in for bottled water, others tap water fresh from tap, others let it sit to outgas the chloramines)
4) don't let your snake get very very cold or very very hot (say under 32F in brumation or over 95F)
5) eggs laid in the water bowl usually don't hatch

THIS from Mr "I know that most people won't feed live for many good reasons, but I do feed live because I WANT TO and if I get f/t I will have to go out of my way and it's just not worth it to me to have to go alll the way across town for my snake"...

That's a long last name lol :laugh01: :)

I agree with the stupidity of people who can't be bothered to read simple things.

Like the rules of an auction, perhaps?

Hey Candachan,

You got to remember that some people do not know how to read. They just buy books to look at the pretty pictures or see people putting in numbers on a thread so they do the same thing. POW

Love the Fatman

P.S. How do you back out of an auction because I thought only respectful people who are true to there word bid in an auction.

I work 60 hours a week, that's 12 hour shifts for 5 days and i'm on all the time also...behold, the power of a blackberry!! (i can't wait to get a new phone though)

Really you took none of the advice given by anyone and 'eventually' one day later got her to eat. So now we will all wait to see if there is a regurg. Hopefully for your snakes sake she won't.
Well dear Susang, yes what you said is true. I didn't take any advice except braining, and cutting. And yes 'Eventually' when i calmed my nerves from everything that happened the day before i was able to feed her late Sunday night. Also i DID call the place where i bought the snake, she was NEVER fed because they couldn't get her to feed. And she was born on October 1st. This Sunday/Monday was her first feeding since birth.

Please tell us the name of this book that you bought on corn snakes.

Lenny, I'm willing to bet s/he has the Katy Manula. :smash:

To the OP: Trolls are those who disturb the peace by starting threads and making posts soly for the purpose of calling attention to one's self. Trolls generally don't have any kind of interest in the subject matter that commonly draws us together. In this forum's case that would be Corn Snakes.

Although your threads may be disguised as questions about Corn Snakes, they generally end up turning into arguments and are not constructive. I can see Fatman's point in calling you a troll.

To those who are annoyed with Shaksnake's hypocrisy:
Time heals all. I'm willing to bet in 6 months to a year Shakesnake will be just a distant memory.
