I liked the thread about "Me and my snake have fun time!" I wonder what ever happened to that guy. Those were the good old days.

(I make the world's best wontons, BTW. Shrimp, ground pork, ginger and spinach.)

Nanci

I know exactly what happened to that guy, he was banned from using the computer for a week. I think I also made him do some extra chores. He's my youngest son, who thought it was hilarious until I caught him showing his big brothers.........

:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Please tell me you made him clean up after snakes. ;)

Dale: If there's a message in the "Netiquette" thread for me, can you please just tell me? I'm too tired and lazy to read that thread, cross-reference back to this one, analyze, and process right now. You don't have to, but I'd appreciate it. I don't like lazy, but there it is. If your reference to that thread has little or nothing to do with me, just forget I brought it up. Thanks.

We've been friends for a long time now, Dale, so hopefully we can skip the bull. I think you know what I meant. If my remark can be construed as inflammatory, please report it. Maybe Susan and Mike will agree. To be honest, three days away from this place may be just the thing I need... ;)

Funny you should mention that, Dean, because that what I PM'd to someone about an hour ago; a part of me was hoping to be shown the door, as *I* could use the break.

And so I'll be pre-emptive; I'll bug outta here for a few days, take a breather, rinse out whatever taste I have in my mouth (a straight line if there ever was....) and respond to you when I get back. Rest assured, I will respond, most likely in PM.

I don't mean to be a drama queen about this, nor do I mean to get all pouty and take my ball and go home in a snit. I've come to respect you as well, Dean, so please understand that I don't "put this on you". The decision has numerous factors, the dynamic of this thread being only a part of it.

In short, it's starting to become more than "jsut sankes" to me, and thus, while I maintain the passion in the hobby, I'm losing my perspective. I daresay I think a number of others here are as well, but hey, who am I to judge?

As for the "Netiquette" link I posted in this thread: as with practically everything that's non-corn related that I post here, my first intent is comedic in nature; thus, the "self-referential" portion to it. If there's any internal message, that's for you to determine/process; I'm tired and lazy as well, and so I'll only do MY homework, so to speak. We'll cover it when I get back.

regards,
jazz

Borat is your son??? BTW, the name of the book is "Chosen By A Horse." I love it even more now.

Well, it hasn't been reported yet.

All right. But I hope you don't take my comments (or implications) too harshly. I really enjoy "The Dale Show". :)

I never took you for the snitty, drama queen type, Dale. I'm confident that your reasons are rational.

I know what you mean. It was one of the reasons I was reluctant to take a mod spot, and it seems that my fears are being realized. Fortunately, I didn't sign any contracts...

I trusted that your intent was comedic. Forgive me for trying to take the lazy route! I'll do my own homework on this one. Maybe we can compare notes later.

Take care,

I left you alone for five minutes and look whats happened... Someone tell me why Dale has done an exile and George is banned? >>> I read the thread and can't see whats so bad... Is it just me?
MIKE

My! Oh, My! This thread sure has taken some interesting turns in the approximate 150 posts since this morning. I'm beginning to see part of the root of the problem...the general decay of common courtesy and respect for others. And the worst part is that some people just don't see it and don't get it. I fear for humanity as a whole if this trend continues. I feel I have a good sense of humor, I enjoy using and reading the occasional tainted comment, and have had more than a few chuckles at some of the comments in this thread. However, I'm seeing more than the occasional off-topic posts/discussions here as well. I think I understand what Zach has tried to do when he created this thread. He has basically asked that the members simply try to show a little courtesy to others here on CS.com in regards to what and how they post. That's all. And I've seen Zack's proffered thought spit on as well as those that are similar to his. I hate to think a few bad apples are going to ruin this place (and planet), but just in case, I want to reserve the first available seat on the next flight off this planet. Maybe Martians know how to treat other beings with dignity and respect.

:shrugs: Don't know why everyone gets so fired up.It's a web forum, you don't have to deal with anyone you don't want to.If you don't like them, block their posts or just don't read them.I like coming on here because you can get alot of good info on the snakes AND just about everyone on here is cool to talk to.Alot of people on here have a great sense of humor and are very funny.I'ts like joking around with your buddies, not just a sterile factual site.I lol on here quite a bit.As far as the kids go,don't kid yourself.Any kid on a computer has read way worse than what's on here, which in my opinion hasn't been much more than G-rated anyway. If you just want the snake info ,don't read posts in general chit chat like "Hot chicks please post your pic here"( All the Canadian girls are welcome to start that thread if they would like)Now can't we all just get along and go back to bashing Vinman for feeding chicken necks!!!! (sorry Vin,see ya in White Plains!)

What comes around goes around.. Seemingly we went through a similair issue last year..
:shrugs::shrugs::shrugs:

I don't have the cleanest mouth around, and well the day a nice looking lady stops turning my head around is the day I am dead.. After all, I am just some good for nothing, insensitve, straight white male that has some decent testostrone levels to get into just about anyones grill..

I realize there are some serious lug nuts on here, and if they are that nasty, or just playing annoying to me I rarely repond to them.. This could widely range from the newbie or someone that has been here a lot longer than me, which could include, but not nesscessarily, involve some popular members here.. What are we suppose to tolerate within in todays near sighted society, that is confused about reality in every way?

There have been recent events that have caused me to seriously consider dropping out of "public" eye here and on other forums, because of the BS talk that goes on.. There is little responibility owned up to what people say, and that is worse than just cursing or a lame attempt at flirting.. It is not this site alone that has caused me some concern.. Personally I like this site, and even enjoy the site, and contribute more here than any other site online.. Granted I know I am not favoured highly by many people, because of my posting style ( which probably is not far off from my r/l persona ) but I am not here to attract attention, be disruptive or even be considered a awesome member, heck I have a pretty dry sense of humour...

When it comes down to it, I can't believe I actually wasted my time to actually post something here in this thread, when people should be honourable enough to accept their own personal responsibility for their own actions..

To be clear, I didn't volunteer my name for consideration or offer to help. My name was mentioned by others, and I was in the top 3 when the voting was over. I said ok.

Thank you Dean.. You have taken the task on in a way I could have never done.. Myself being a little cranky and cut and dried probably would not have tolerated a lot of things here myself. The doorman mentality still goes through my mind when it comes with dealing with people .. Sometimes I miss just tossing people out the door..

Regards.. Tim of T and J

No, he hasn't offended me, either. :grin01:
HA! Be aware...I've thought about it...then thought better of it...You HAVE, afterall, posted pictures, and you and your wife are both FAR from "unattractive". Being a man...I'm a horrible, horrible person...:uhoh:

I wish I would have read the whole thing before I posted my response to desertanimal, but alas...I'll leave it stand.

With the attitude that George recently displayed...I can certainly say it is almost prophetic what Zach posted in his original post. I don't blame anyone, especially not jazzgeek or texastailfeathers. But I do see how the general "attitude" of the forum is what gave George the audacity to act in such a disrespectful manner. Wether or not he would have acted that way regardless of recent "changes" seen on the forum...it was rude, and WAY out of line, IMO.

But I also see jazzgeeks point of "its jsut sankes", and how THAT attitude needs to be more welcome, too. I do see where alot of things are taken way too seriously, and I am guilty of this as well.

But again...it leaves us with nothing but a big question...What, exactly, are we to do?

I'll say it again...Dean, Susan, and Mike...you guys are great. We could not ask for more fair moderation than what you three provide. And I'll add...Dale...can't wait for you to come back. I'll miss your humor and clear, insightful irony and banter.

George...I hope you have learned that cursewords are not the only rule. Respect is a two way street, and if you want people to respect your right to be an individual and to speak your mind free from harrassment and ridicule, you need to respect the rights of other people, and you need to be respectful of the people that work VERY hard to maintain this site in such a warm, welcome, and sophisticated manner as it is primarily kept.

Zach...I get it. If not before, certainly now. The devolution is inevitable when it is mistakenly believed that a few good jokes are the same as complete disrespect and outright offensive behavior.

Oh, and diamondlil...I can't believe that was your kid. That thread...what a joke. I wouldn't have known whether to give him a slap for being a goofball, or give him a high-five for nailing the subject that would rile the masses...
:punch::smash:

Anyone else waiting to be addressed...I simply have nothing more to say on this topic, except the following. This is only the beginning of brumation season. With all the adults going to sleep for the winter, I imagine cabin-fever will REALLY start to take hold soon enough. If a post offends you, report it, don't ignore it. And let's everyone try to maintain a semblence of self-respect along with our sense of humour. We need both in this forum...

I was one of the people who actually answered the little rat! He's actually my main helper, feeds and handles the snakes if I'm away and claims Slim is 'his' snake out of the collection. The leopard gecko, treefrogs and cockateil are his pets, along with the stray cat he's adopted.

You'll have to ask Dale about his self-imposed exile. All I can say is that I sincerely hope that it doesn't last long. George pushed things too far, and I already explained his minor suspension in a previous post.

The thing is, your opinion on what this site should be, and my own opinion for that matter, really don't matter much. We don't own the site. The site's owner/admin runs a business, and he has expressed on a number of occasions that what happens on this forum reflects on his business. You may be a proponent of the "anything goes" approach, but he is not, and when I agreed to be a mod, I considered it my responsibility to uphold his vision for what this site should be.

Rich wants the site to be a good resource for corn enthusiasts of all ages. Believe it or not, there are parents out there who actually monitor and control their childrens' internet activity. I don't think the parental control tools available are sophisticated enough to block ONLY the general chit-chat sub-forum, and inappropriate material isn't limited to that sub-forum anyway. I always considered it part of my responsibility to make this place safe for the younger members too. And by "safe", I don't necessarily mean protecting them from content, I mean protecting their ability to participate here because their parents are monitoring. Don't think I don't sympathize with you-- despite the generally great under-18 crowd we have here, I've often wished that the site was 18+. But it's not my site.

And I've never bought the whole "kids see worse" argument. So when your 12-year old daughter gets kicked out of school for lewd conduct in a boy's bathroom, what do you do? Do you go to the principal and say, "hey, many kids do the same or worse."? If she reports that she and her friends routinely watch two teachers getting it on in a car in the school parking lot, do you say, "kids see worse on HBO."? If you find out that the afterschool program your 12-year old daughter attends at her school is practically unsupervised, and the kids routinely engage in sexual conduct in the back room, do you say, "oh well, 12-year olds are sexually active these days, so I guess it's no big deal."? When you allow your kids to go places where you think they're being protected, and it turns out that they're not, you don't get mad? To be honest, the whole idea of adults conducting sexual conversation and behavior in front of children is creepy to me. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned in that regard.

And you write: "It's like joking around with your buddies..." But is it really? You already modify your behavior by not using full-blown profanity. I know I do. Ask my buddy Joe Cala (Joejr14) about my language usage in our private conversations. He could tell you that every other word that comes out of my mouth begins with "f". I consider myself to be a very foul-mouthed individual in the right company. I ENJOY using profanity, and the more profane it is, the more I enjoy it. I also enjoy extremely foul jokes, all sorts of sexual banter, and a wide array of -er- physical activities. I have other sources for these things than cs.com, and to have them missing from here would not create a lamentable vacuum in my life. I also engage in phone conversations, PM exchanges, and email communications with some members, and my conduct is adjusted to the person with whom I'm conversing. With so many communication media available, I'm baffled by why some people are so adamant that all forms of communication should be tolerated in the open areas of this site. :shrugs:

Your right about anyone's opinion. All I was trying to say is I've never seen anything on here that even came close to X or R rated, maybe PG.I guess I just can't explain it the way I want to.No big deal,I'm not upset with anyone.Because your a fan of lewd jokes and to show there's no hard feelings,I've pm'ed ya a pretty good one.

HA! Be aware...I've thought about it...then thought better of it...You HAVE, afterall, posted pictures, and you and your wife are both FAR from "unattractive". Being a man...I'm a horrible, horrible person...:uhoh:
Ha ha. Well as long as you didn't say anything completely vulgar and degrading, I wouldn't have minded. I generally find it confusing and entertaining to be "hit on" by a man (as long as it's in a nice way), because it happens so very rarely. And, of course, I also take it as complimentary.

I generally find it hilarious and gratifying when Kristi does (which happens much more regularly), because she doesn't like to talk to strangers, and she gets really confused about what's going on when an unfamiliar man starts talking to her. I also must admit, I enjoy the smug feeling I get when it happens--they can look all they want, but she's going home with ME. :)

I think you've got your answer, Zach. The community has changed. That's because the people in it have changed, and that will continue to happen. Maybe it will change back to something you're happier with. Maybe it won't. But it sounds like it won't change back tomorrow, because the people in the community aren't interested in being the community you remember. They want other things out of this community than you do, and from the sounds of this thread, they haven't been willing to say, "Well, technically Zach is right about the rules, and we agree with him, so we'll change our behaviors." Instead, I think what has been voiced is, "I like it this way, maybe I'll be a little bit more careful, but I don't think these behaviors are unreasonable, and they haven't gotten me kicked off here so far, so I'm not planning on changing a whole lot."

I don't think that's a bad thing, necessarily, it just wasn't what you wanted. It reflects the personalities of the people who are here. Just like before, the feel of the forum reflected the personalities of the people who were here. I think you got a little of what you wanted. If I didn't say it before, I will pay closer attention to what I post. And maybe now, if a thread I start takes a turn I'm not personally comfortable with, I'll speak up about it instead of letting it go. And tyflier said he'd pay attention. I think that's really all you can expect, is for people to think twice and be sure to act within their sensibilities. You can ask for people's sensibilities to line up with your own, but you can't expect you're gonna get that. Trust me. If people's sensibilities lined up with mine, my boss wouldn't be able to legally fire me, because I'm gay, and I would be able to legally marry my beautiful wife and take advantage of all of the fiscal benefits that legal status affords. But alas, that's not the case, yet.

This is a creepy, weird and scary paragraph, I have to say. I don't want to think about those things. Especially the bold part...

But, that I agree on.

I feel the same way. And you know, it may demonstrate a lack of good judgement on my part in posting it. I should have considered that my audience may include people who relate closely to the subject of my examples. I'm sorry. :(
