How Long Can I Leave Eggs With Mom?

Sorry for the absence!! We just got to the vet today since it was the only time it worked out with my schedule and the doctors. I went to a new vet that was recommended on a local reptile forum and WOW!!! What an awesome vet!! I was handed four pages of paper to fill out upon getting to the office, all asking about reptiles. The questions were all about temperature, lighting, substrate, etc etc. I knew I was in a good place, and the vet was super nice and knowledgeable. Only good news to share!
The egg is not one that is causing any blockages, but we went ahead and aspirated it to help her out, and he did go ahead and give her a shot of oxytocin. He said the shots are a 50/50 with reptiles but it's worth a try maybe to just loosen the egg from the ovary. So prognosis is good. Her temperature has been bumped up from 82 to 87 for the time being. He said surgery is not something we need to look at yet and that with the egg having been stuck for only three weeks he didn't think this was a bad case.

Glad for good news!

Im obviously no vet but, I would have thought 3 weeks would be reason for concern? I can just imagine my wife with a baby in the birth canal for 3 weeks and ths OBGYN relling her its no big deal :D

From what I understand about it's action oxytocin is of limited value in snakes as the oviduct doesn't really contract like a mammalian birth canal.

That's a good suggestion about bumping the temps. I believe low temps are the number one stress for reptiles, and having warmth is essential to solving nearly any problem.

How Long Can I Leave Eggs With Mom?
Personally I watch Mom go in the box a million times before she doesn't come out.
Then I leave her alone, never disturb her, and whenever she decides to come out of the nesting box (or a shed skin appears in her viv) is when I remove the nesting box.

Or to put it another way, when she is ready to leave the eggs.
It is less stressful and the natural organic approach.

Although the first few years I tried to do the thing where I checked her every 5 minutes after entering the nest box and that resulted in a few instances of seizing up the Mom's muscles and causing several instances of egg binding, especially in the less experienced mothers, and some costly vet bills, and a few deaths.

Yeah he said the oxytocin is a 50/50, it works in some snakes but not others, even if the same species. But the hope is that it will loosen the egg from the ovary and then she can pass it on her own. He had just used an injection in a bound sand boa and said that he thought it didn't do her any good until he soaked her a little while later and helped her and out popped a mummified fetus

I guess three weeks must be earlier than some people bring their reptiles in.

It's moving! It's moving! I almost bet it will have passed by the time I get home on Monday :D

Happy to report that with a little extra help, the egg is finally out and this misadventure is over!!
