mouse bite--owch :(

Team Snug
k, so I went to stun a mouse today to feed to my ball python, and as I picked the little guy up he bit me. Hard.
After I pulled him off of my pinky finger, guess what he does?
Yep, goes right on and bites my other finger.
...Hard.
It hurt
Now, however, I'm concerned about the amount of swelling around the punctures. How much swelling should there be? The bite was a few hours ago, and the joint in my pinky is hurting, the bone is achy, and it's pretty swollen.
He got me in a bad spot, on the side of my finger where there's barely any skin, it's just a lot of my bone.
What do I need to do? I put neosporin on it and bandaged it for a while.
Anything I should look out for? Do I need to go see a doctor?
He was an icky feeder mouse from a pet store...they're not kept in the best of conditions, it doesn't seem like.
Should I get a tetanus shot? The last one I had was my DPT as a child, I couldn't have been older than 13 and I'm 17 now. ;-;
Thanks you guys. :)

Mouse bites hurt, but I wouldn't worry about it as long as you keep it cleaned (peroxide, neosporin and bandage is good)

The problem with bites like yours is that you keep moving the injured area and that makes it hurt more and inflame more...which makes it seem worse!

I wouldn't worry too much about getting a tetanus shot if you've had one recently. They're good for about 10 years.

I'm pretty certain tetanus shots are good for 10 years. I don't think tetanus is something you have to worry about in this situation, however I'd be concerned with bacteria from the mouse teeth in the wound causing infection.

The wound should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and hot water... and then I'd pour a good dose of hydrogen peroxide over it. After it dries, I'd use the neosporin. You will probably be just fine if you get it cleaned out real good, however keep an eye on it for signs of infection, such as if it starts to fill with pus.

I also think it would be a good idea to let your parents know so they can help you keep an eye on it and they will likely recognize infection if they see it and can get you to a doctor.

Next time wear big thick gloves :)

tetanus is for rusty metals......

i would take care of it and if it gets really sickly looking go to the doctor....

my local pet store who sells feeders offers to pull out the teeth

Dude what?? There is no need to do that if they are prekilled, so the only need I can see for that to happen is if they are not prekilled, and if they are pulling out the teeth of a live animal, that is effed up to holy high heaven.

he offers frozen, fresh killed ( which he kills it right then and there in front of you) or you can buy them alive and to protect the owner and the snake he takes a pair of needle nose pliers and yanks the teeth out.... so the mouse cant bite.... idk its his way of doing things...

I have to agree with Lovin2act that is "jacked up". However, it is one way to protect the snake from the mouse's sharp teeth. I am so glad my snakes eat F/T.

Same here Fatman! Very glad indeed! Something seems off, maybe even illegal with "his way of doing things".

Well I tell you what....
if I knew the man's name, and his location I can guarantee you that the authories AND the media would be notified......

This from a fur and leather wearing meat-eater who loathes PETA.

well he is legal and he can do it..... everything about his business is legit. the media would just get him even more business cus he specializes in exotics and what can really be done about it jail time, a fine? i doubt it.

he is allowed to do it because he labels his mice as feeders and he explains how its protects the snake and the handler. he sells non-feeder mice which he doesnt pull the teeth out.....

if the mouse is set as a feeder its gonna get eating anyway thats what he told me...

If you skin a live cat before you euthanize it, is it no longer cruel?

It takes a screwed up person to think that is okay.

I think I have to call BS on this one, regardless. Pulling out the teeth of a mouse with pliers... the amount of force needed to do it would surely snap the animals neck. Thus rendering the animal fresh killed as opposed to "live."

want me to see if i can get a video? i havent seen him do it because you have to ask to view it.... same with killing if you ask he will allow you to watch.... he just told me that he pulls them out with pliers... he might have other methods idk exactly to be honest im just going from what he said... and it aint bs because i have seen a mouse he showed me with no teeth he fed to one of his snakes..... he prolly has a different method for smaller mice aand a diffferent method for rats... i dont know.... ill go in there and ask him and watch and see exactly how he does it.

if you met this guy... you would think he is messed up him and his wife are weirdos but they sell cool stuff and have neat stories but other than that i can see them being the house kids are afraid to stop at on halloween cus it creeps them out....

No. That's disgusting and wrong, you should NEVER shop at that store and report them to the authorities. By shopping there, you are encouraging that horrifying practice. That is not ok.

Seriously. That is NOT ok. It will NEVER be ok. That's sick and wrong and something needs to be done about it. Report that man.

I wonder if by "pulling out" he is not really cutting the front teeth down. the reason I say this is my daughter had a Cavy that we had to cut down its front teeth with what looked like dog nail clippers. If he is really just cutting the front teeth down then he is not hurt the mouse or rat one little bit because they normally are shorter in wild animals were they can gnaw all the time.

Just a guess on my part.
